It would be an upset of epic proportions if Burleson bats against lefties this season.
With that said and thanks to injuries to Edman, Noot, and now Carlson, Burleson should make the team and receive plenty of opportunities. He needs to make the most of said opportunities or he will be Memphis bound when the trio returns.
It’s all up to him at this point.
I’m excited for Scott, but I’m sure this is devastating for Carlson. Kid was going to get another chance and now that opportunity is gone.
Kinda cruel. Let’s hope Scott is the next Willie McGee or Curt Flood with a splash of Brock/Coleman thrown in!
He’s got to play nearly everyday? Right?
I mean, who wants to see Siani in CF? And Cards can’t put Scott on the end of the bench, can they?

So Mr RBK, if I’m reading this correct, scouts see him as a platoon/duper-sub type?

Mr Rats I’m looking for a big bounce-back season from Nado. And I think that after a slow start, Goldy puts together a decent season, say .280 26 HR 90 RBI. However, this will more than likely be Goldy’s swan song as a Cardinal.
Mr T8ball I’ve yet to see Saggese play. In your mind is he a legit starting second sacker prospect or more of a utility guy moving forward?
I work during the day and have yet to see him play.
Again Mr Shady, would it really be prudent to move Gorman to a brand new position midway through the season.
The move you suggest could be unprecedented.
I’d also note that if Goldy were to wave his no-trade, and if I were going to make an unprecedented move, I’d be be moving Walker to first base. But that’s just my opinion and I’ve been wrong before.
With all due respect, I think you need to tap the brakes a bit.
You just admitted you don’t know much about Saggese’s glove or arm, his speed, his range at second, his ability to turn a double play, his power potential.
Yet you’re ready to ditch Goldy to get him in the lineup at second while moving Gorman to a position he’s never played before?
Seems risky to me. Goldy is a historically slow starter. Might as well see how his season goes while monitoring Saggese’s progress at AAA. Does that not seem a bit more prudent?
That’s great. I’d be thrilled. But as a middle infielder, I’m curious about his glove, arm, ability to turn the DP, and his ability to steal a base or go first to third.
Mr Shady I can’t agree nor disagree.
I neither panic nor throw parades based upon ST statistics. To date, Burleson has been a poor hitter who demonstrates very little power at the MLB level. I certainly hope that changes in 2024.
I’m definitely not impressed with Burleson’s speed, base running, or glove. But if he crushes baseballs once the season starts, he can find his way into the lineup. If he continues to be a Sub-100 OPS+ guy with little power, he’ll be out of baseball within a few seasons.
I’m rooting for all these kids to reach their full potential (Burleson, Carlson, Noots, Edman, Scott, etc), however history tells me that some will never do that. Unfortunately.
But much of Edman’s WAR was accumulated at second or short. I’m judging him as an outfielder where I don’t see a strong arm at CF or much power for a CFer.
Interesting comparison between Edman & Carlson.
Edman is considered by many to be a Golden Child while Carlson is a disappointment. But to date in their careers:
Carlson 99 OPS+
Edman 100 OPS+Now Edman will turn 29 in early May while Carlson will be 25 this entire season. So my feeling is simple, if Carlson can step up over what he’s done early in his career, he will be a superior outfielder than Edman. Then again, he MUST take that next step!
I’m not asking for a crystal ball. I simply want to know about their tools and how they will project to mlb.
My apologies as I thought you stated earlier that you follow these prospects closely. I’ve admitted I do not, Mr Shady and was hoping that since you follow them closely that you could provide some additional insight that the box score does not.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen them play. I follow the MLB club. Maybe someone else knows more than we do as neither you or I seem to know anything.
But Mr Shade, the info given is more a recap as to what they’ve done. I’m asking about their overall skills as well as how it projects to MLB?
Again, do they run well. Do they have strong arms? Do they project to hit for any power? Do they have high ceilings? Why did their former teams give up on them?
I can look up their stats. Im trying to ascertain if they’ll be key contributors or journeymen subs?

Obviously, everyone knows that Scott is exceptionally fast as well as a top-notch defensive prospect in CF.
But, what do we really know about the other two? Will their minor league hitting abilities translate to MLB? Are they still developing power or do they look to be big league slap hitters? Can they run? Can they field? What are their arms like? Why did their former teams give up on them?
I’m not an expert on the mines like so many here, so I’d love some answers. Will Saggese & Prieto be difference makers in the majors or are they projected to be simply journeymen-types?

I’ll say this, If Burleson doesn’t crush the ball during the Edman/Nootbaar absence, he’ll be in Memphis when they get back.
Carlson has value defensively & running the bases that Burleson does not. So in order to stay on the club, Burleson must excel with the bat.
But here’s the deal with Carlson.
He’s only 25. Same age as Burleson. And I’m old enough to remember the Cards giving up on guys like Bobby Tolan, Jose Cruz, and Andy Van Slyke only to see them eventually blossom on other teams.
Maybe Carlson fails us again this season? Or maybe he just wasn’t ready previously and now he is?
I think this season is his last shot in a Cardinal uni.
Edman may return to Center. Then again, if Carlson takes this opportunity and runs with it, becomes at age 25, the player he was projected to become, it may mean the end of Edman in CF.
IMHO, having both Edman & Donovan on the team is a redundancy. If everyone is healthy , one needs to go via trade.
Then again, who knows when Edman comes back? One month? Two months? All Star Break?
Call me crazy (just not to my face), but I think this is the year when Carlson becomes the player everyone thought he could potentially be.
I’m sure the plan is for Edman & Noots to regain their positions, however if Carlson hits, hits for power, and plays above average defense, he may throw the proverbial monkey-wrench into the team plans.
Stranger Things (not the TV series) have happened.
I’m not very good at predictions. However, this team reminds me a great deal of those much-maligned 70’s Cardinal teams. A few stars, a few good players, but too many holes to compete.
In the 70’s Cards had guys like Brock, Simmons, Reggie Smith, Keith Hernandez, Templeton, Bake McBride. But overall, mediocrity was the theme.
I see this team as similar. I see this Cards team winning anywhere between 76 and 84 games. Mediocre.
I can’t speculate as to what the rest of the division will look like.Wow! Eight pages to discuss the hitting prowess, or lack thereof, of THE Alec Burleson!
