NO FERMIN!Noot has been on rehab for a week so it most likely is for him coming back. The tough decision comes later when Herrera is healthy. It gets even harder from there if Edman comes back and we haven’t traded from the big league roster. I more and more see Carlson and maybe even Herrera being traded.
It is not if Edman comes back…it is how long he rehabs in Springfield. He likely will be back after the All-Star break on July 19 in Atlanta.
I expect Herrera will take over as backup and Pages will go down. Herrera has been in the org 8 years and if they didn’t like him as a catcher surely he wouldn’t still be one. I don’t think they are going to admit they don’t know what they are doing and destroy his trade value by not using him as the backup.
I see Pages going down until the deadline for Herrera. Herrera actually has some trade value.
It looks like Ken Rosenthal must be reading my comments here as he says the Cards may trade from their big league team as well with Carlson and Herrera. I could definitely see a team with a below average catcher trying to make Herrera theirr every day catcher. He needs work with the glove, but Milwaukee has shown that can be done with the work they did with Naverez and now Contreras.

Some thoughts…
1. Edman should take longer than most on his rehab as it’s really spring training for him. He needs to work on his timing and getting into game shape. It’s not as if he’s been out 10 days with a tight hammy.
2. I’d hate to jettison Herrera because he’s a decent RH bat. I like him as a DH, backup catcher, and a future 1st baseman & left fielder. If he can make himself versatile from a defensive standpoint, he would be an extremely valuable commodity in this modern era of baseball.
It isn’t that I want to jettison Herrera, but that Herrera has trade value at an area we can expend. Bling is right when he says you have to give up talent to get talent. If we can get a mid rotation SP for Herrera, I say go for it.

I’m not against trading anyone in the right deal/package.
And yes, typically one has to give up quality to receive quality in return.With that said, it would have to be a nice deal as a I think a guy like Herrera can be so valuable in this modern era of baseball.
I think Herrera is valuable because our other rh bats besides Contreras haven’t produced for a lengthy period of time. Im pretty sure Herrera could fill in at first if Burly can. I wouldnt turn down a trade that looked like better value in return, but i dont trade him otherwise.
A chance to go 6 over .500 today. Let’s hope good Mikolas shows up and Arenado and Goldy can spur the offense.
I think when Herrera comes back I would DFA Crawford. There is depth for more IF help with Fermin, Prieto, Dunn, Saggese in AAA if needed. OF of Donovan, Carlson/Siani, Nootbaar, Burleson at DH. Burlson can move to LF or RF if needed, and Donovan becomes the back-up IF even though hes technically the LF. And go with something like…

Could possibly go with Donovan at 2B and Burleson in LF sometimes too. But I leave Burleson down in the line-up vs. LHP if I’m doing it.

Burleson vs LHP .200/.225/.318/.542As for Herrera getting traded. He’s the best MLB ready chip right now for sure. But I don’t see Mo making a big splash. So I think Herrera stays. Carlson I could easily see getting traded, but for what? I think Mo adds a RP or 2 and might get a SP, but it’s not going to be anybody big. It will be one of the deadlines that everyone questions why they aren’t doing more and they just try to add some depth and hope for the best.
Carpenter has been hitting well for a month now. I don’t mind him in the lineup if it’s a good matchup. I wouldn’t say the LH pitcher is that matchup for todays game though.
My guess is Carlson is back due to the LHer on the mound for the Nats and Pages is at CA again with Contreras at DH.

They pulled Kloffenstein so I imagine it’s him. I thought I read Nootbaar was meeting them Tuesday in STL.
there has to be 13 position players and pitchers. They can’t swap an IF for a pitcher without making another move.
I mentioned weeks ago that Herrera should be traid bait. Pages is the backup C of the future. Why? Because he can catch.
Someone will want Ivan because of his bat so we might get something useful in return. Otherwise it is possible the Cardinals just go with three catchers. They have done it before.
I’m not sure I see why they would trade anyone on the MLB roster unless a team blows us away with an offer, which isn’t likely to happen since we’re the ones buying. Unless we want to go full Milwaukee Brewers and trade our closer, which I’m still in favor of.
Herrera or Pages can be optioned to AAA. It provides nice depth to have in case a catcher gets hurt. Trading away Herrera puts that depth in jeopardy.
Carlson is the only righty (sort of righty anyway) who is an outfielder and he’s insurance depth at CF which we don’t otherwise have. And he also can be optioned still if they want to go that route. I guess if Edman looks 100% maybe you consider it. But I don’t think time is on our side for Edman to get to 100%. I feel the same sort of way about losing Crawford. He’s insurance until Edman shows he can be better. Dylan’s value is also really low with potential to improve.
And we don’t need bullpen help unless it’s someone elite and we’re not likely going to put the best package together to buy that sort of person. I feel the same about the starting pitchers. We’re not going to be willing to pay above market value to get someone. That means we could get someone like John Lester. That doesn’t seem helpful with the emergence of Pallante.
What could we do to get better that wouldn’t squander the future? Dropping or trading Carpenter helps a bit as that frees up a bench spot for someone better – preferably a right handed hitter with some pop. I wonder if we have a guy like that at AAA? The team could also choose to make Goldschmidt more of a bench player or in a platoon with Burleson. Is that likely? Probably not. But it’s the most pragmatic move. That’s about it.
I don’t really see another good way to improve the team without giving up a lot and hurting the future. We just aren’t good enough to risk going for it. Bling has said the same thing and we’re on the same page here.
Yeah, I think you guys are correct. Our club needs more help than we would get by acquiring a patchwork piece, like a 5th starter or middle reliever.
While it would be bad PR, trading Helsley to a legitimate contender could bring in a nice return. And Helsley would seem to be at risk of breaking down some in the next year or so. That is probably the smart move, but not the way management will go as they won’t want to face the public outcry.
