He’s shown an above average ability to reach base, but I’ve always thought of him as an average run of the mill type player. If he’s overrated at all, I think it’s because he’s “The Nootz” and he looks like a young Wayne Nooten…

    ^^^^^^

Hard to say what he is as he’s always hurt…

Runs well, plays really good defense, and gets on base…but…you can’t make the club if you’re always in the tub.

I’m starting to wonder if Goldschmidt needs to also be lowered more in the lineup. He still has some production. But he too often seems helpless in the clutch. I realize the way Arenado and Gorman have performed this season. It doesn’t give Marmol many MOTO options, right now.

Currently, it’s becoming more and more obvious that the Cardinals have a dubious MOTO issue.

When Nootbaar returns. Do the Cardinals keep Burleson at 2 or move him into more of an RBI spot? Maybe Winn, Donovan, Burleson, Contreras, Goldy, Nootbaar, Arenado, Gorman, and Siani or Carlson.

It’s obvious that Marmol really likes Winn and Burleson at 1 and 2. And it’s been a good combo at the top of the order. Now, the “big money guys” need to come through at 3, 4 and 5. Will they? that’s the multi-million dollars a year question looming.

Considering Contreras is the team’s best hitter by a wide margin, I’m not sure why you wouldn’t lump him in with Winn & Burleson rather than Goldy & Nado?

AdM, are you really sure Contreras is ” the team’s best hitter by a wide margin”? Some now feel Burleson is, at least, the Cardinals’ “most feared hitter”, right now. That has to befuddle you, somewhat. lol Give it up, man. You were grossly wrong in your nasty posts regarding Burleson and my support of him in the past.

Contreras easily takes the most feared title this year and pitchers showed that by walking him 15% of the time. Contreras’s wRC+ is at 158 and is the highest on our team by 37 points!

I understand what you’re driving at, Albert, but Contreras has only accumulated 167 PA’s in 40 games this season. I’m not sure he’s seen enough action to qualify.

I don’t think it matters to the opposing pitcher if Contreras has enough PA to technically qualify to determine which hitter they least want to face in our lineup.

No, I don’t guess it does, Albert, but if Contreras is our most feared hitter while playing in only 40 games, our most feared hitter isn’t very frightful…Which has been a problem all season long…Haha!

Burleson is a “stud, bud” player. He can fricken’ hit. Be thankful he’s a Cardinal. I took tons of grief for supporting him earlier. No biggie. I just saw it in Burleson. The Cardinals now need some high-priced “big boys” to perform like Burly has recenly.

Winn and Burleson at the top of the lineup, followed by Contreras, Goldy,
Arenado, Gorman, Walker, Donovan, and Edman hopefully will be the lineup going into the playoffs. With Goldy and Arenado playing up to their contracts. That could be fearsome.

If everybody was great the team would be great. I agree with that.

    1. Yes, I’m really sure.
    2. Some people are idiots.

Burly critics could hardly wait to pounce on him. Burleson promptly redeemed himself for a questionable defensive play by delivering another hit, contributing to another run, raising his BA to a very respectable .281.

I’m not a Burly critic nor was I criticizing him. Simply pointing out that he is not the hitter Contreras is. Not even close. And anyone who thinks he is doesn’t understand baseball.

I didn’t even mention his horrendous defense, you did.

Burly’s best position is DH. He should play first occasionally and the Outfield only in emergency situations. He’s that bad (since you brought it up).

AdM, if you understand baseball so well. If the “ghost runner” reaches third base in extra innings, bottom of the inning, the Cardinals are down one run with one out. There’s a RHP strikeout-artist pitcher on the mound. Who do you want batting to not K and get the sacrifice fly. Burleson or Contreras? In this scenario, Burleson is every bit the hitter Contreras is. There are different forms of “the most feared/best hitter”. Burleson is one of the main reasons the Cardinals have been seeing so many LHP starters lately. If you understand baseball so well, you should be able to figure out why.

What an idiotic scenario & and I’m an idiot for playing along, but here goes…

I want Contreras up because I’m not just trying to tie the game, I’m trying to win the damn thing!

Contreras has a higher/better OBP, SLG, OPS, OPS+, RC/27, and ISOP.

Contreras is the far superior hitter. Please stop as I fear you’ll only embarrass yourself further.

AdM, “I want Contreras up because I’m not just trying to tie the game, I’m trying to win the damn thing!” That’s weak. Obviously, you aren’t factoring in the strike
out factor that could keep from even tying the game. Against a fabulous RHP strikeout pitcher, Contreras is much more prone to K than Burleson would be. And please try to keep your posts here classy.

Shady, come on. First you were saying Burly is a better hitter than Contreras, and then switched it to a situation specific scenario as to who would be more likely to deliver between the two.

There is really no argument. Right now Contreras is the better offensive player. Burleson is trending upwards and could eventually be the better of the two.

Situation specific – most of the time I would think Cardinals fans prefer Burly versus a righty and Willson versus a lefty. Day in and day out against all pitching, Contreras is the guy I think teams fear more. Again this is right now. This will change in the coming years as Burly gets into his prime production years and Contreras fades.

Sorry, I’m not convinced Contreras is a better PURE hitter than Burleson. I guess that comes down to what a “PURE” hitter is. I’ve heard some notable baseball announcers/commentators speculate that Burleson was the Cardinals best hitter at the time. That may have been while Contreras was out with injury. I will admit, Contreras is likely a more feared hitter, overall, right now.

Contreras vs RH pitcher .893 OPS
Burleson vs RH pitcher .868 OPS

FACTS are your friend, Mr Shady.
Any other cherry picking you’d like to attempt?
