Mr Shady I’m not sure how to categorize a career .237 BA, .670 OPS, and 83 OPS+ apparently?

    Stupendous? Miraculous? Amazing? Magnificent?

No, I’m pretty sure “failure” is the correct word to date to describe the Alec Burleson era in St Louis.

I’m hoping he turns it around. Can’t have a DH who can’t hit in the lineup.

I’m pulling hard for Burleson, but he hasn’t produced at the major league level very well so far.

No he hasn’t and he’s approaching a point of which it can’t be claimed that he didn’t get his chance.

Previous 3 posts are dead on.

We can hope and some can hype Burly, but to date as a MLB hitter…. Not much there.

He needs to perform well and very soon. If not you can follow him at aaa as soon as Noot returns.

We need a 15 page thread on Zane Mills. The kid has a bright future. 🙂

I’m not sure if Nootbaar, Edman and Carlson will produce a lot more than Burleson as a hitter. I guess we’ll see. I’m assuming some posters weren’t impressed with Burleson’s .375 BA in spring training. I was. And I’m guessing the Cardinals were, too.

A long time scout once told me not to put any importance on Spring Training stats – either good or bad.

If Scott’s spring training BA had been .117 instead of .317, would he be in the bigs right now?

How did Goldy do in ST, BB? And how did he do in the 1st game of the regular season?

The problem with Burleson is that’s he’s a one dimensional player. He can hit, but he can’t play defense well, and he’s slow on the basepaths. I’m all for him, but he sure has his limitations.

The fact is, if you’re going to be on the ML roster, you have to produce. To date, Burleson has produced nothing. Don’t talk about hard hit balls, “bad luck”, or strike out rates. At the ML level, he has in a word – sucked. The other options who are currently on the IL need to hurry up and get healthy.

Wow. Well put! It will probably ruffle someone’s feathers however this take seems to be the consensus.

Burleson right now is 0 for 6 for the season with 3 strike outs.

Tough night at the dish for Burly! 0-4 (0 for 2024 now) with another K.

Cards need to find some offense somewhere.

Burleson’s BA is no worse than 8 time all star Nolan Arenado’s.

We can probably figure on the offense being the same as last year’s, since its the same guys. The guys on the upside of their career have a chance to be better and the guys on the downside have a chance to be worse. I figure thats a push.

Well Mr Bling, the difference is Nado has a long track record of success which Burleson does not.

I believe Nado has averaged about 30 HR with 100 rbi in three seasons here to go along with his magnificent defense.

With all due respect, it’s a poor comparison.

My purpose was to illustrate the stupidity of making anything of a two game sample. I do not deny you are within your rights to make of it what you want.

Tough growing pains. Burleson and Scott are 0 for 14 so far.

Fair point, but Scott and Burleson have very different experience levels. It is sort of like the Arenado and Burly comparison above, but in reverse.

Scott has been thrown into the fire without an inning of Triple-A experience and a half season at Double-A. Yes, Walker also did it, but he was a better hitter. Those who suggested Scott should be leading off let the hype take over. He will probably still be fine, but better with more minor league seasoning. Still, Scott is not a lock to become an MLB starter. We covered the pros and cons of this in detail in his prospect ranking article.

I just hope that if Scott doesn’t pan out that the second guessers don’t blame the organization for “ruining him by rushing him”. There is a clear CF need and he is the best answer they have right now. Sometimes the greater need of the team overrides a player’s optimal development schedule.

Mr Bling you are absolutely correct! Two games of a 162 schedule is essentially meaningless.

My only point is that this is Burleson’s third season with the team and we’re still waiting on him to perform. His two-game slump is meaningless in a vacuum , however one could also say it’s simply the continuation of an underperforming, disappointing young player.

I don’t know what to think. I had hopes that he would become the next Lance Berkman type of hitter. I’m starting to fear he’s the next Peter Bourjos with a bat in his hand.

Brian it sure seems like the Cardinals have had an exorbitant amount of organizational needs requiring players to beamed up over the past few years. It looks more like organizational depth mismanagement to me, in which case it would be entirely legit to fault the organization for poor results. They moved Bader, they moved Adolis Garcia, Lane Thomas and O’Neill, all of whom had CF competence to a degree, they moved Palacios. They kept the guy who has repeatedly failed to answer the bell in the past. So it is a bit much to say Scott is rushed to MLB due to organizational need and not to blame them if he is the worse for it. It is organizational bungling on display.
