Per Shady/ feel it’s fair to mention that the team, collectively, is off to a slow start offensively. Why nitpick?
To be fair, the thread you created is about Burleson and mentions him in the title. It’s not about a group of players but rather one, specific individual. I’m not sure one offering an opinion regarding this one, specific player is nitpicking?
March 31, 2024 at 9:57 am #245776In last night’s game, I mentioned on the game thread that Burly looked good in right field. Played very well out there and the throw to nail the guy at home was excellent. He looked lost in his first AB of the evening, but came back and got a big hit later.
Needs to recognize those pitches that are nowhere near the zone and lay off them. But Yamamoto looks deceiving. I think he will be tough to time with that bit of a delayed motion and the movement of his breaking pitches.
As a side note, only a couple of games in for Yamamoto, but not sure giving him 12 years was warranted.
March 31, 2024 at 10:24 am #245780Was Burleson selected “player of the game” for his defense and offense? IMO, this struggling team really needed this productive game from Burly. Go Cards !

April 3, 2024 at 6:09 pm #246384I’m not pleased with Burleson’s hitting, right now, overall. But what about Arenado, Walker and Gorman?
April 3, 2024 at 6:17 pm #246387bump
Lol Scotty!
Except for Contreras and maybe Donovan, nobody is hitting right now. Arenado has been atrocious in the clutch. Looking at our first 7 games, we didn’t hit a lick, except for Gibson’s start, are starters didn’t pitch well, our pen was nothing special…….but our boys have played some pretty good defense. And yet we still came within a whisker of heading home with a winning record. I guess there’s much to look forward to.
April 3, 2024 at 6:22 pm #246390Still a SSS but Burly is having a rough year at the plate. Guessing he gets sent down when some of the other 3 outfielders on the IL trickle back because he still has options, and because there are other left-handed DH options.
Really needed him today.
Probably needs to be somewhere where he can play everyday. Not sure that’s in STL.
April 3, 2024 at 6:39 pm #246393And yes Pugsley, the offense is anemic outside of WC and BD.
Starting pitching was better than I hoped.
3-4 is a pretty standard West Coast trip even with a good team. Guess I’ll take it given 3 outfielders and Gray were on the IL.
April 3, 2024 at 6:45 pm #246395I’ve been criticized before for including other players in this thread. But others have, so I’ll chime in with some thoughts. I wouldn’t be surprised if Burleson is sent down. But I’m not convinced Nootbaar, Walker, Carlson and Carpenter will hit much better than Burleson.

How many seasons of failure do you need to see before you admit you and your RedSox Scout were wrong about Burleson?
He can’t hit. He has absolutely no value at this point.

Nootbaar: 117 wRC+
Walker: 114 wRC+
Carlson: 99 wRC+
Burleson: 82 wRC+Nootbaar and Walker are far superior hitters to Burleson. Always have been. Burleson isn’t even in the same zip code as those two. Even Carlson, with his pedestrian 99 wRC+, has outclassed Burleson by a healthy margin.

ParticipantBurleson should probably be sent down right now to get his stroke back. Bring up Prieto.
April 3, 2024 at 7:36 pm #246409When they are already shorthanded in the outfield, would they replace an outfielder with an infielder? Not to mention one who is not on the roster so would cause someone else to be taken off?
And if they wanted an infielder, Jose Fermin, who was the last cut of the spring, is leading Memphis in hits, runs, doubles, home runs (tied), RBI, BA, OBP, SLG and OPS. And he is on the roster.
April 3, 2024 at 7:37 pm #246410Burleson dissenters. I’d be more concerned about the more highly acclaimed players’ struggles, right now. Arenado, Walker and Gorman. How about trading Burleson to the Red Sox like they did with O’Neill? Or to the Cubs, Brewers or Reds. Would that thrill you?
April 3, 2024 at 7:43 pm #246411Brian, good points regarding Fermin. He has surprised me with his production.
April 3, 2024 at 7:45 pm #246412It may be a flash in the pan, but Fermin is swinging a very hot bat right now.

Participant“Burleson dissenters.” You mean those who actually take it upon themselves to gather research, analysis, data, and evidence to help form and support their views in good faith?

Expectations are higher for the better players so their struggles are probably worse for the team.
However, the difference is that the highly acclaimed players have had success previously, so it is reasonable to expect they will do it again. Burleson has yet to have sustained success and some are tired of waiting for it.
Most posts I saw either want him to play better or get sent down. Again, this isn’t trade season, so why get focused on that?
April 3, 2024 at 7:59 pm #246417Brian it might not be “trade season” for the Cardinals. But please correct me if I’m wrong. There’s been some MLB trades recently. Why wait to the deadline to try to improve the team? With the obvious logjams the Cardinals will have when Edman, Nootbaar and Carlson return. Especially, if they stay with Scott. Which wouldn’t overly concern me, right now. So you wouldn’t trade Burleson despite all the apparent outfielders higher than him on the pecking order?
April 3, 2024 at 8:04 pm #246418The only trade of note that I saw is the Giants trading their third catcher who was out of options so he could not be sent to the minors.
Smart teams only trade players when they can fill a need as a result, not because a player is slumping. “Sell high.” What teams would trade a helpful player two weeks into the season in return?
Specifically. Burleson has minor league options. There is no reason to consider trading him now. That might change later in the season when the outfield is at full strength (maybe) and teams that aren’t going to reach the playoffs make trades looking for the future. That is in July not April.
April 3, 2024 at 8:05 pm #246419Some decent points. Frankly, I’m perplexed by Burleson’s overall hitting production right now. Especially, after the spring he had.
April 3, 2024 at 8:14 pm #246421Same points I made in one of the trade chips threads…
April 3, 2024 at 8:16 pm #246422What teams would trade a helpful player two weeks into the season
The answer is a team that wanted to swap its useful player for a different useful player. Like the Cards and Rays swapped Palacios for Kittredge.

If only a bunch of posters had told you not to put too much stock in spring training numbers . . .
