Burly doesn’t have Nootbaar’s defense and speed. But I really feel he has as much hitting ability as Nootbaar. Burly just needs to produce more home runs. He’ll get plenty of doubles. What have the prospect gurus had to say about Saggese? An Astros announcer today was “gah, gah” over Saggese.

jj-cf-stlParticipantShady, the FO knew their outfield depth when they traded O’Neill and Palacios. They haven’t added back. They’ve cleared an immediate path for Burly and Siani to be outfield reserves w/a shuttle pass.
I have endorsed non-tendering O’Neill the last two winters. Palacios I liked but he may have been traded just because he could play 2B 😀
Siani is a CF friendly backfill since they dipped into that depth when Bader and O’Neill were traded.Overall maybe it’s a wash, but I’m looking forward to watching.
March 24, 2024 at 6:16 pm #244866jcs, with the infield logjam. I would like to see Saggese get some work in the outfield at AAA. It would help his versatility. Also, another RH bat, potentially, in the outfield against a tough lefty. Whatcha think?

Look at their O-swing%s, BB%s, OBPs, and ISOs, and you will see why one is much more valuable than the other. Being a good offensive player isn’t just about swinging the bat, it’s also about discerning when not to. The goal is to maximize production per out consumed/burned, and Burleson simply burns through a lot more outs per unit of production than Nootbaar.
March 24, 2024 at 6:47 pm #244871Noot seems to strike out at a much higher rate than Burleson. Noot often seems to get in a hole trying to nurse a walk. I like Burleson’s aggressive approach. It’s going to pay off for him if he’s a little more disciplined in what he swings at. And I’m kind of seeing that.

ParticipantHere are the metrics I mentioned in case you don’t have them:
Player/O-swing%/BB%/OBP/ISO/OPS+/wRC+
Nootbaar: 18.5%/14.3%/.367/.157/115/118
Burleson: 35.9%/6.6%/.300/.146/87/89Last year, Nootbaar and Burleson actually had pretty similar isolated power numbers (Nootbaar’s power was down from the .221 ISO he posted in 2021), but Nootbaar simply got on base at a much higher rate. As importantly, his higher OBP is/was built on a more solid foundation of good plate discipline, which is more stable/repeatable year to year than other metrics like BABIP.
As for K%: ultimately, an out is an out. You don’t get penalized extra for a K versus a routine GB to 2B or a routine FO to RF. The objective of the game is to maximize production while minimizing outs; it is not to simply minimize one particular type of out at the expense of all else.
March 24, 2024 at 7:03 pm #244873RBK, that’s in the past. I foresee see Burleson improving a lot from last season. He’s an intelligent, talented lefty hitter.
March 24, 2024 at 7:20 pm #244874And I doubt Burleson will be hurt all the time. It’s obvious he’s a beer drinker/hot dog kind of guy. He will probably stay healthy all the time.
March 26, 2024 at 3:56 pm #245028The way Burleson is hitting, does he start against a LHP early in the season? Or do they go with a righty bat? Maybe Herrera at DH. Burly was hanging in there pretty good against a good LHP today.
March 26, 2024 at 4:16 pm #245032It would be an upset of epic proportions if Burleson bats against lefties this season.
With that said and thanks to injuries to Edman, Noot, and now Carlson, Burleson should make the team and receive plenty of opportunities. He needs to make the most of said opportunities or he will be Memphis bound when the trio returns.
It’s all up to him at this point.

Herrera shows the power potential once again. I can’t see Burleson getting many opportunities against LHP. Not until he disciplines himself into not swinging at pitches so far out of the zone that he can only make weak contact
March 26, 2024 at 4:33 pm #245036Here’s what I don’t know.
If Herrera is in the game as a DH and Contreras gets injured, can Herrera then switch to catcher during the game?
Thanks to anyone who knows the answer to this.

I believe he can, but you then have to use your pitcher as a hitter like in the “old days”.
March 26, 2024 at 4:47 pm #245044Albert, despite Burleson’s .375 BA in ST, you don’t seem to be too high on him. Do you feel Burleson deserves to start against the RHP in the opener?

March 26, 2024 at 4:57 pm #245048Burleson may start in CF before season’s end…

ParticipantNeither Carpenter nor Burleson “deserves” to start: one has a good resume that unfortunately is now quite out of date, and the other has no resume. Marmol will allocate PAs to one or the other based on who he thinks will give the team the best chance to win that day. There is no “deserve.”
March 26, 2024 at 5:03 pm #245050I’ve previously been high on Burleson and am still hoping for the best, but I learned a long time ago that it’s prudent not to read too much into ST performances.
I’d add, to date he’s been helpless against lefty pitching, he’s still slow, and still a poor fielder.
Let’s just say, the jury is definitely still out on AB as a productive MLB player.

SSS ST stats are essentially meaningless, but since you continue to emphasize them:
Carpenter: 1.073 OPS
Burleson: .988 OPSMarch 26, 2024 at 5:22 pm #245052He may not collect a solitary PA vs. LHP’ing this season.
March 26, 2024 at 5:29 pm #2450531td, I think you’re wrong on that prediction. We’ll see.
March 26, 2024 at 5:31 pm #245054RBK, I doubt if ST stats are meaningless to the guy making out the lineup. At least, early in the season.
March 26, 2024 at 5:36 pm #245055RBK
ParticipantRBK, I doubt if ST stats are meaningless to the guy making out the lineup. At least, early in the season.
If ST stats were “meaningful to the guy making out the lineup,” Arenado and Goldschmidt would be batting 7th and 8th this coming Thursday. How much would you be willing to wager on that being the case?
And if ST stats are meaningful, why aren’t you advocating for Carpenter to start at DH rather than Burleson?
March 26, 2024 at 5:37 pm #245056bccran
ParticipantIn 2023, against LH starting pitchers, in 18 games Burleson slashed .056/.308/.111/.419.
March 26, 2024 at 5:38 pm #245057Of 400 career PA’s, 27 have come vs. lefties. Carpenter will get most of those in ’24. If Burleson gets a handful of PA’s vs. LHP’ing, it’ll most likely be because the opposing manager has outmaneuvered the whiz-kid Redbird manager late in a game and forced him into sending Burly into the box vs. a lefty.
