bccran…He could still be the “one out guy” if he enters the game with 2 outs in the inning and retires the first batter he faces for the 3rd out. In that case he wouldn’t be required to begin the following half inning and would only face one batter. But for all intents and purposes the days of the classic example of “loogy” are in the past. That’s a shame.
Thanks, 1TD. Isn’t there still a good role for a loogy if several left handed hitters in a row are coming up for the other team in a tight game?
The Cardinals swapped Andy Van Slyke for Tony Pena in April.
Technically this is true, but similar to how a dollar in 1987 is not the same as a dollar today, this was not an in-season trade.
The trade occurred on April 1, and the season started April 7. So this would be consistent with a mid-to-third week of March trade today.

When Noot comes back, do Cards send Siani or AB down? Possibly Scott?
I’m old school. I’d hate to sacrifice elite defense for a .190 hitter. But what do I know?
I wish they would keep Siani. I know his bat isn’t much but his glove work should not be underestimated. Having someone of that defensive caliber to help finish out games is invaluable.
When Noot comes up, the last to come up will probably be the first to go down. But if they want to keep Scott’s speed on the roster, Burleson could very well be the one to go down.
Why does Burleson get so many ABs? Could it be that the Cardinals organization really sees him as a talented hitter?

I don’t know, but I’m going to guess the Cards keep Burleson & his .190 bat in the lineup due to injuries to:
Edman
Carlson
Noot
Carpenter
Donovan

AdM, I feel you are underestimating the respect the Cardinals have for Burleson’s hitting ability. He got plenty of ABs even when most of the team was healthy.
For the record:
Scott is 3-for-30 (.100) with 30.3% K rate and 45% fly ball rate. He has two walks and one stolen base. His total contribution, including his elite defense, is -0.3 bWAR.
He was brought up before he was ready and it shows. He needs to gain Triple-A experience. Nothing bad or wrong about that.
I really like Scott but we all know he needs to play every day at AAA this season.
Siani probably is who he is at this point but when Carlson, Nootbar, and Edman all return there will be no room at the inn.
Burleson is probably back to AAA and then traded.
The line up should be fine as the walking wounded return to action.
It’s a couple more starting pitchers at the deadline we need to be angling for because we are still a few bricks shy of a load there.
I like what I see of Victor Scott, but he needs to play every day for Memphis right now. His days will come.
What will be interesting is to see if Carlson can leverage his good late Spring work and do well once he is back.
Because of the roster and options situations, Burleson may be sent down. However, it’s obvious to me how much Oli respects Burleson’s hitting ability. If not as the DH vs RHP. As a lefty bat pinch hitter.

If “he got plenty of ABs,” why do you continue to studiously ignore (and avoid discussing) his actual results?
