Wow! A .500 road trip … did not expect that playing the power house NL West Teams at home! Now I hope they can spank the Cubbies this weekend!

The Cardinals claw back to .500 with today’s series win on the road against a team that I’m guessing will repeat as WS champions, so I have to give them credit and acknowledge that they continue play better that I would have guessed after striking the colors at the deadline. It could be a heck of a lot worse as witnessed by the Rockies who lost their 4th in a row today by a final score of 20-1 at Coors field against the Blue Jays. They now rest on the floor of the abyss with a W/L record of 30-84. With 48 games still to play there’s no reason to think they won’t shatter the all time baseball record for futility of 121 L’s set last season by the White Sox. So, be happy for what you have because there’s a lot of sadness in this world.
NL Central is now 16-9 against the Dodgers on the season aided by 6-0 from Milwaukee, 4-3 from Chicago, and 4-2 by St Louis.
Probably not. But who knows? It’s baseball.
The Cardinals only have a winning record against just 4 National League teams right now. The Dodgers as mentioned above, Phillies, Reds, and Nationals. They are .500 against Arizona and have yet to play the Giants. Losing record vs everyone else.
I detest interleague play, the DH, and runner on second in extra inning games.
But – MLB didn’t ask for my opinion before they implemented these changes.
They can also stuff their archaic regional broadcasting rights where the sun don’t shine.

What’s more, I detest organ music in ballparks.
I will go on record as saying that I don’t think the Dodgers will even make it to the world series this year. They seem a bit off to me. Betts is having a down year and they have countless pitchers on the IL. For all of the smart things they do they are foolish when it comes to acquiring pitchers with a history of injuries. They have used 38 different pitchers this year. 40 last year.
Congrats to Riley O’Brien for logging his first mlb career save.
He is approaching 30 IP in a couple more outs, and appears to have his sights set on Leahy’s breakout “statistical darling” status from last season (RE24).
Having faced 120 batters, and allowing a .587 ops is certainly shut down, but it’s his GB% of 54.7% standing out.
Riley has JoJo’s K% and GB% this season. In 24 relief appearances, 15 appearances have been low leverage, but, August has changed things. TBD.
I like the Jo Jo and O’Brien combo at the end of games. Leahy has been good as well but as you mentioned he may get a look at the rotation next year.
Jojo is the most deserving to be closer but O’Brien makes the most sense if the 9th inning isn’t full of lefty hitters. Perhaps they can both do it depending on the matchups? I like Leahy too but more so in the 2-3 inning role as the bridge. Granillo/Graceffo/Svanson may get there but none has earned anything yet.
Leahy has piggy backed Libby a couple turns now. He’s a good shut down arm in mid-innings when it could get out of control. He has a runway of multiple IP in that role (Matz) but can also get high lev appearances mid-week. A couple appearances could mean I’m reading too much into it too 🤠
O’Briens main competition for “statistical darling” out of the pen is Svanson, who is also in a multi-inning role like Leahy.
Svanson has strong numbers. The pen will sort themselves out. Hopefully it’s enjoyable and not a trainwreck!
