I’m ambivalent. I think Bloom is a smart guy. He kept Marmol here for a reason. He’s talking about extending him for a reason. Maybe he plans on handling him differently than Mo? I dunno. But Bloom isn’t making moves purely for PR reasons, that’s for sure.
I’m starting to think this entire dire state of affairs with our Cardinals is merely just a bad dream……hopefully I’ll wake up soon.

What does that have to do with an extension?
As I have stated before they aren’t going to bring in a big time manager until they exit the rebuild. It appears that we are only at the entrance.

Well, this move won’t endear Chaim to a chunk of the fanbase too much, but it is sort of a low hanging fruit situation. It wouldn’t be too hard (or expensive) to move on from him to the manager of choice if the rebuild isn’t going as hoped.
If the MLB roster is to be used as the top rung of the PD system for a year or two, then Ollie might be a good choice.

It’s completely different. It’s not Keeping Marmol thru the duration of his contract. It’s news. They’re talking of extending him. MLB trade rumors broke the story. And frankly I don’t see a lot of other threads clogging up the board. I’ve probably started no more than half a dozen threads total since I’ve been posting here. And you stalk and snark each one.

A POBO and ownership who’d like to see a players manager oversee this thing. Someone who both likely see eye to eye on his value.
This shouldn’t be shocking news. Was reported in September that Chaim was likely to go down this road and start extension talks.
It’s gets beaten like a dead horse around several sites that Oli is the reason this team has been around .500 the last 2 years. It’s in your mind. You have been brainwashed by the flock. He’s only a small part of it. Look up at the ivory tower and there’s the real issue that have kept this team out of the postseason the past 3 years. Hopefully a new vision gets us were we want to go and if Oli is here for it then that’s just the way it is.

I could not agree more, Pugs. I hated the Bloom hire from the start and now I…what’s stronger than “hate”?
Marmol is cheaper than a real manager. Bloom is here to make more dough for ownership by minimizing all payroll. In that double-context the idiotic move makes perfect sense. And Cardinal fans can look forward to nothing for at least two or three more seasons.
I give retroactive thanks for all the years that the DeWitt family ran a payroll commensurate with their revenues and really, really tried to win. Now they can jump in a lake.
In college, it really hurts recruiting if the HC doesn’t have a few years left on his contract; I don’t think it matters much if any in the pros.
At this point I’m ambivalent on Marmol as the manager; I can see plusses and minuses. Sounds like he’s going to get an extension of some kind – could be only 1 year tacked on. I guess we will see.
I don’t care if they fire him and I don’t care if they add a year to his contract. Now, my eyebrows will raise if Bloom adds 3 or 4 years to his deal.
If anyone is surprised by this talk I can only say don’t be. This Cardinals franchise hasn’t been serious about winning in years now. They have passed into perpetual loser zone alongside the Pirates. Get used to it. This is who they are and the manager doesn’t mean a hill of damn beans.
The Cardinal management has clearly told us that winning is not a priority. They try to dress it up with various alleged long-range strategies to make us believe that this is anything other than a plan to stuff maximum money with minimum effort into the pockets of ownership. That is, of course, their right. Baseball is first and foremost a business and the guys who count the beans can do whatever they want, including keeping on a mediocre manager if that serves their purpose. If the customers don’t like the resulting product they can all take a jump in the Mississippi. When the last bean has been squeezed out of the fans the owners will no doubt sell up and move on.
Lots of different opinions. I will say Marmol is the clear beneficiary of whatever grand plan Bloom has. I thought it was simply inconvenient to bring in another new manager and staff at this time. Now they talk extension.
Doesnt surprise me. I can almost see the sense in it based on this teams expectations going forward for some time. Is marmol the only reason this team has failed recently, obviously not but he is one of the reasons. I think fans view of him is also tied partly to fan attendance though not solely obviously. Hes just another sign this team is becoming the pirates. They still have some fans show up. The casual ones, not the real ones. I tried to be optimistic when bloom was hired, hoped he was a step in the right directiin. And possibly, he may yet be. Im not as optimistic anymore. While i used to think the front office was a big part of the fail, more and more im seeing ownership as the flaw. They got lucky with pujols which netted them some favoe. Dont know if another pujols is coming through the gates. So yea extending marmol makes some sense in a weird kind of today way where people dont think managers matter but hes also another reason not to bother coming to the ballpark to spend hard earned money.
After spending an enormous amount of time asking AI to research the impact on the number of wins and losses a ML manager has on a teams record – ‘the computer says’ up to 4-5 wins and as many as 7-8 losses.
Taking the two extremes with +5 wins being a great manager and -8 wins being a putrid manager the spread is a maximum of 13 games – which is significant.
Stepping further out onto the AI limb it suggests that the vast majority of ML managers influence 2-3 games per year – either way.
So unless the manager is horrifically incompetent to the point of being silly – no matter who is in the dugout it’s plus or minus 2 to 3 games a season from a strictly procedural management point if view.
Now, if the manager creates / allows to fester a toxic clubhouse culture where the players are absolutely miserable and at each other’s throats then from a human resources standpoint I could see a massively negative impact. On the other hand a really good clubhouse chemistry where everyone gets along and has each other’s back – while pleasant – will not lead to a massive increase above talent level in wins.
Personally I think Marmol is a middle of the road, competent ML manager who probably learned a lot about keeping his mouth shut after the Tyler O’Neil base running drama.
In my opinion he was too young when he was promoted but after 4 years he’s now not.
If the Cardinals ever get back to at or near the top of ML baseball – say an actual NLCS contender – then those 4-5 games that a truly elite manager brings to the table will actually matter. Unfortunately, that’s not a likely discussion for at least a few years…
Count me into the group that says ‘Managers don’t matter’ although I do believe that mangers do matter, but not as much as some people think they do. That said, I would never dare to cross the statistics gods. I will submit that resurrecting TLR by waving $$$$$ in front of his nose didn’t help the White Sox much. And LaRussa has been touted as being one of the greatest managers ever. Personally, I like Oli and how he tries to work with the organization as part of its team of personnel who are trying to win games by each contributing their personal expertise to a brain trust. I like the way Oli is willing to give prospects a chance and how he tries to bring them along with coaching and encouragement. I never liked how TLR, and his prodigious ego, were forever playing mind games with players and with the front office. Matheny and Shildt had their draw backs, too. Oli Marmol will have a whole lot of very promising talent falling into his lap in the next couple of years. He’ll be getting better and better as a manager as that happens.
