FiveThirtyEight has an interesting article on the newest Phillie –
Is It A Clown Question To Ask Why Bryce Harper’s Stats Are Down
Ny,
Google ‘Keith Hernandez npr interview’ and you’ll get links to a wonderful interview he did on “Fresh Air” last June.
Hernandez considers himself a Cardinal.
He’s the best Cardinals first baseman, defensively, that I’ve seen and certainly belongs in the St Louis HOF. Just because he was also successful when playing for the Pond Scum shouldn’t be held against him.
Dang Nate! Did you get hacked? 🙂
I am REALLY opposed to the minors being shunted off onto a separate forum. This place’s foundation dating back to the Fanhome days has been it’s substantive MiLB discussion.
Sites evolve so maybe that subject is not as wanted as it was. I’ll stop here before I post something I truly would regret.
Re Hernandez’s thoughts on himself as a Cardinal:
Back in the last year of Busch Stadium’s existence (I refuse to follow the absolute nonsense of referring to Sportsman’s Park as Busch I), Keith was selected as the Cardinals’ first baseman on a team of best Cardinals team (can’t remember the exact criteria but pretty sure it focused on living players. Could also have been focused on just those who played in that park).
Anyway, they were honored in an on-field ceremony in which each came to the microphone to say a few words. Hernandez said “I’m a St Louis Cardinal! I always have been and I always will be!”.
Since he was under contract to the NYM, I remember hoping his statement didn’t cause any blow back.
And I agree with Brian, Hernandez is the best defensive first baseman I have ever seen play.

And what a great perspective by Ryan Sherriff
My heart and prayers go out to his family and loved ones.
BHC,
Brian’s original post referred solely to the Major League phase of the Rule 5 draft. Since St Louis’ 40-man is full, they could only lose players in that phase. They could not pick up any players.Tom Verducci has a really interesting article re Boras’ selling of Harper
Didn’t expect Big Lee to don a StL hat. Still thrilled for him.
Before any more pins are stuck into the Gregerson voodoo doll, Goldy didn’t want Gregerson to give up #44. He even refused the Cardinals when they encouraged him to take one of the few remaining non-retired single digits numbers. He randomly chose #46.
Yikes!
Hate to hear this news. Hope he catches on elsewhere soon. Very knowledgeable guy.
Happy Thanksgiving to Everyone!!
Ugh
I like it. No guaranteed role.
Like others have said, some of our younger pitchers have been inconsistent. Alex Reyes needs to prove he can stay healthy for longer than 35 seconds. CMart is a big basket of uncertainty.
Lots of roles open. Let’s see where Waino fits since I think he showed enough at season’s end to be able to contribute positively next season.
The quotes below are from an article in The Denver Post.
Now, maybe it’s me but Maddon says he isn’t going to make excuses and then does.
It is disappointing because our anticipation or expectation is to play the last game of the year and win it. It’s just that this year we had a lot of things go awry. I mean I’m not going to stand here and sit here and number them. And furthermore the schedule was rather difficult towards the end, I don’t even know how much that played into it.” — Cubs manager Joe Maddon
“One word? Gritty. Gritty. Again, you’re not going to hear me make excuses and this is not an excuse we have had a lot of things go awry this year and in spite that have still tied for the most wins in the National League in a 162 game season. Again, that speaks to the quality of the player in the room of the and even though maybe the numbers offensively didn’t matchup, these guys put up 95 wins.” — Maddon, summing up the Cubs’ season.
I don’t see how being a supporter of any one player somehow equates to either worship or adulation. Think that’s more than a bit of a stretch.
OTOH, I think one can find an insult if they go looking for it. We’re all fans, shortened form of fanatic. The term implies a lack of subjective analysis.
The subject of Tommy Pham has been discussed ad-nauseum. He triggers pretty intense emotions on both sides. I come down on the pro-Pham side but understand why others think differently. (If I had the funds I’d create a t-shirt with Tommy’s pic on the front and the phrase “I’m a Phammite” on the back and wear it proudly!). But I also think that if the rest of his career is successful, he STILL would not have done that here.
And how long someone has been a member of this board is totally irrelevant.
Sooner,
Wong out with “hamstring cramps”. Never knew there was such a thing. Anyway, he’s expected back in the lineup tomorrow.Wight and Wong- I’m laughing
wagee, the game’s color commentator(AJ Pierzynski) said the same thing. He even began the 7th by saying that at Wainwright’s pitch count, he figured Waino would be pulled at 1st batter on. Later he said he was surprised Wainwright was still out there.
Another one who was surprised was me.
But with the way the bullpen got taxed in Gant’s 2 2/3-inning start (or at least most of the bullpen that can be trusted to take the mound in a close game), Schildt likely figured Waino was his best option.
We won because I turned off the game. I swear I’m a jinx.
I hate Ozuna!!!!
Get your head out of your tush, Ozuna!!!
Bloody Little League play!!!!!!
WOO HOO!!!!!
That thing was an absolute bomb!!
Still 10-4 end of 7th
