Vox Media, the same parent of Viva El Birdos, made a very bad decision today. I know how I felt when Scout/CBS de-emphasized baseball and it was not fun for a long time. Hopefully John Sickels and his staff can find a new home quickly. They do good work.

Most insightful, even-handed, and entertaining prospect coverage on the internet. (Except of course for Cardinal coverage, where the gold standard is right here.)
Forget the high-profile places like MLB.com, BA, BPro, and Fangraphs. Rob Ozga for the amateur players and Sickels for the professionals — they’re the best around.

It’s facinating to me that all these media outlets are letting people go at a time when ad revenue for news/content is at an all-time high. It’s like when the automobile replaced the horse and buggy….except all the money is going to Facebook and Google, who don’t put out any news or content at all.
If The Athletic ever runs out of money and lets the dozens of writers go who they have absorbed from other media outlets cutting staff, the industry will really be in a bad place. I have no view of their books and how much venture capital they have, but I do know that a subscription-only model is a tough one to show, let alone sustain, a profit in.
Yeah. They are just about the only game in town anymore. I don’t know how you win as Google and Facebook are behemoths now.
