Having opposing teams open the bubbly in wild jubilation at Wrigley on consecutive days is just a dream….oh a dream come true! Maybe that’s what awaits us in heaven…..having a good meal every night of the week and then sitting down to watch the cubbies suffer a devastating loss on their own turf, in front of their own faithful. We can only pray. You could see these losses fermenting. The fashion of Pittsburgh easily having their way with the north riders in the first 2 games of their series in Wrigley last week was a precursor. But what was surprising to me was that it wasn’t their starting pitching that betrayed them, but rather their offense. Sure, Hendricks and Lester had been dealing with the best of them over this past month, but I figured at least one of them would be off their game this week….didn’t happen, but thanks to a feeble offensive display, they’re gone!
For all the hand wringing, the Cubs won 0 games when it mattered most. Even if they had made it to the division series, I questioned whether they’d have enough pitching to carry them. They will face the same issues going forward. Way to go, Brewers and Rockies!!

Now hopefully our front office will swing into action and build a team that can beat those jokers next year!
Great to see the Rox bring Rocktober back to the Rocky Mountain west, especially by knocking off the Cubs. However, it makes the Cardinals weak showing to finish the season even more frustrating. The Cubs had no trouble piling up runs against our team, other than the gem Mikolas pitching, but could not do much of anything against Milwaukee nor Colorado.
The Crew have played great down the stretch, as have the Dodgers. Those two look like the teams to beat, but you never know.
Great to see Matt Holliday get into another post season. Go Rox!
Awesome. Gave it up in about the 11th inning and went to bed. There was a stat about Heyward and how terrible he has been in post season. Cards were wise not to over pay a slightly above average guy like Heyward. Good bye Chubbies, so delighted that you are out.

Like was mentioned before it was not the Cubs pitching that did them in. It was their vaunted offense. I didn’t know this but they had 40 games this year where they scored 0 or 1 runs. It was feast or famine for them.
It will be interesting to see what they do this off season. Like the article mentioned guys like Russell and Schwarber could be out the door. Also, the whispers around Joe Maddon will get louder. Will they really fire him? There has been speculation that the reason Dave Roberts doesn’t have a contract beyond this year is because Andrew Friedman wants a reunion with Maddon. If that happens perhaps the Cubs can pounce on the hometown boy Joe Girardi.

Cub fans like to complain about Cardinal fans being spoiled and entitled yet I am hearing a lot of that from their players and fans right now.They just can’t accept that their season is over. What goes around comes around. I know they will still be plenty good the next few years but there are some chinks showing up in the armor of their dynasty.
My favorite thing about the Cubs, other than that they’re sitting at home right now…is that they’ve got some big $$ already tied up for several years going forward in guys that are unlikely to exceed their salaries in value. Heyward stands out, and I dunno that you could call Darvish a bust yet but he’s gonna make some change. Tyler Chatwood is making about a million bucks per strike. Lester will eventually age (I think the inconsistency this year is a first blip of many to come). By 2020, Bryant, Baez, Schwarber, Hendricks, etc will be 2 years into arbitration and other key guys will start to get paid. They’re going to be straddling the luxury tax line for several years to come.
Oh, and their farm is not good after trading away some of their top talent in the Chapman and Quintana trades. They’re still division favorites next year, probably…but could easily be division #3 in 2020.
I think we’re still eons away from legitimately being able to refer to this cubs team as anything near a “dynasty”, GScott. About a month ago I heard some of the cub player batting averages with RISP and it about knocked my socks off. Kris Bryant’s was absolutely horrendous…..I wonder how he finished in that regard? Anyway, when Colorado players started wildly jumping around at the conclusion last night, I started crying like a baby. Hearing this, my wife, who knows nothing about sports, proceeded to bring me in a piece of delicious chocolate cake that would have choked a horse. She had no idea that they were tears of joy and not sorrow……so I decided to keep the little “sad” charade a going and had her give me a good 15 minute back rub for good measure. Talk about a perfect evening…..there I was laying on my stomach munching on cake…getting a royal back rub fit for a king….and all this while watching Rockie players celebrate like madmen in Wrigley. At one point my wife stated “I thought you didn’t like the cubs, honey”…..to which I said “You don’t understand the baseball playoff system do you, baby”….to which she shook her head no…..to which I finished with “we just needed the Rockies to win, baby”…..and yet she still did not catch on.
Pugs, I wasn’t referring to them as a dynasty myself. I used the word because that is what there organization and fans believe they are. I think they have been very good the last four years but not a dynasty by any means.
Stl25, you nailed it. They will still be good awhile longer but there is light at the end of the tunnel for us that can’t stand them.
Reports circulating that Joe Joe is off the hot seat and will return as manager next year. Oh how he has fallen though, he was the toast of Chi Town not that long ago.
Contrast this with the Cards, who would not let Matheny go into his last year without an extension despite the team missing the playoffs in 2016. As a result, they are paying him through 2020. In other words, they got a half-season from that final three-year deal.
sources say Joe Maddon will be back for a 5th season as cubs manager next year. there is no discussion of an extension. neither side has broached the matter, so likelihood he enters 2019 as a lame duck (albeit a high-priced lame duck).

Chicago fans still seem very sensitive about the tag – and this was written long before last night.
Thanks for that, Brian. Indeed, just to clarify things, the word “loveable” is both allowable and justifiable in conjunction with the “cubs”, if and only if the word “losers” follows the word “loveable”.
In case anyone is interested, I just checked one of the Cubs forums. They had 95 – that’s 95 – pages on their Rockies game last night. A lot of negative stuff too.
