I believe rosters will limit them to one selection. Last year, they took two outfielders. This year, the greatest need appears to be pitching. I couldn’t give you a name, as there are hundreds of possibilities in the minors. I don’t even try to guess who. They got Brebbia in the minor league phase a few years back, so now and then, there are some hidden gems.
After rereading your article on possible pitching in rule5 I checked out some of the players you mentioned and a few do seem like possible solid bullpen options for either late 2019 or 2020

For those still angry at San Diego for picking off #stlcards prospects in the Major League phase of Rule 5 in past years, it won't happen again today. The Padres, like the Cards and five other clubs, have a full 40-man roster already.

Bw52, over a month ago, I shared which Cardinals are eligible to be taken in the minor league phase, but there are hundreds of players across the other 29 organizations. It is not worth chasing. The vast majority in the minor league phase are guys who never make it.

The Cards picked up John Fasola, RHP from the Rangers in the minor league portion of the draft. The 27 year old missed the last half of 2018 with an ACL injury and didn’t pitch at all in 2017 but has been solid in his minor league career…10.7 Ks and 2.2 BB per 9 innings with a 3.28 ERA and 1.180 WHIP.

The Cards can only lose players in major league phase,
is confusing, especially considering Nicasio was lost in the MiLB portion of the Rule 5 Draft.

Brian’s original post referred solely to the Major League phase of the Rule 5 draft. Since St Louis’ 40-man is full, they could only lose players in that phase. They could not pick up any players.I must have missed Schlesener was elgible for Rule 5 minor league phase from last December. He is one of my sleeper picks as a reliever or starter for Peoria likely. He was drafted the same year as Helsley. But I guess no one wanted him due to his slow progress and control issues.
