4 pitch walk!!!!
Don’t like sending Martinez out there for the ninth.
Sure hope I’m wrong.
While Memphis North was taking down San Francisco, Memphis South downed Colorado Springs, 15-7. HR’s by O’Neill, Martini and Tovar. Even Matt Pearce went 1-for-2 with two runs scored.
Re Reyes – the max IP he’s ever gone in a season is 116.1 in 2015. (went 111.1 IP last season)
Coming off major surgery it’s not clear what he’ll be able to do in ’18. But spending an entire season in a rotation is unlikely.
Leake also had a NTC which makes it really tough to deal him. Finding a match between teams interested in him and teams he’s willing to play for could have been tough.
Absolutely, Pads. I don’t expect that projected rotation to hold up at all. But Waino will be slotted into that rotation unless he either a) voluntarily moves into the bullpen or b) is injured so badly he can’t pitch at all.
Logan,
The trade wasn’t for the Cardinals to acquire anything from the Mariners. Ascanio = Pete Kozma, at best.
The trade was to sent Leake elsewhere, freeing up both a rotation slot (for Waino’s return, if nothing else) and giving management more payroll flexibility to sign a ‘hopefully’ better starter going forward.
2018 rotation (as of now)
Martinez
Wacha
Wainwright
Weaver
??Looks like Derian Gonzalez is beginning a rehab assignment with the GCL club (my bad, his second rehab start)
Oneiver Diaz promoted from DSL to GCL Cards and was the losing pitcher. Welcome to America.
The DSL double-header was rained out.
GCL club tied it up at three all in the eighth only to lose 5-3 in regulation. Offense had almost as many walks (five) as hits (six) and Patrick Dayton (losing pitcher) didn’t get much help from his defense although both tallies were earned.
I don’t see how Ortiz taking pot shots at Christians is worthy of the key strokes it took to tweet it.
Since you’re a mind reader, perhaps you can skip this post because you already know what I’m going to post.
I want the team improved and competitive. Period.
I want the team playing a quality of baseball resulting in post-season play leading to World Series championships. This team as currently constructed doesn’t meet that standard.
I DON’T measure the quality of the team by how much management spends. Ever.
Sometimes you improve a team by spending big and sometimes you don’t.
Mo’s post-deadline quotes infuriate me. They still need to see what Tuivailala can do? Really? He’s been up and down more than a gymnast learning the balance beam!!
There was no ‘compelling reason’ to make any particular trade? Really? How about the team isn’t worthy to wear the uniform they put on!
Since I haven’t posted much recently, you can have zero idea of my views on much of anything. Please don’t assume what my response will be.
And if you’re going to be facetious, perhaps using blue font to make it clear for those of us too straight forward to get it.
The following players on the 40-man roster were not drafted by the Cardinals (note: ‘drafted’ in this case includes players signed as International free agents and developed in St Louis’ minor league system):
Dexter Fowler (how soon we forget)
Jedd Gyorko
Jose Martinez
Randal Grichuk
Mike Leake (mayhaps we want to forget he’s on our team?)
John Brebbia
Matt Bowman
Brett Cecil
Zach Duke
John Gant
Sean Gilmartin
Seung Hwan-OhNow, the argument can be made that their attempts to bring substantive outside talent into the organization are rather crapatastic. But over 25% of the 40-man are not home grown.
PS: I deliberately left Waino off that list. No, he wasn’t drafted by St Louis but we got him early enough in his minor league years that I consider him home grown.
I haven’t seen a report indicating St Louis wouldn’t offer Lynn a QO at season’s end. Possible that I missed it.
Goold has a very good article re how organizational control of the potential tradee impacts the trade return.
Goold: What on-the-go Garcia tells us about Cards and trade deadlineI want this team improved as badly as any Cardinals fan in existance. I’m disappointed that nothing was done to improve the team at the trade deadline.
But I also realize I have zero idea what was being offered. And I know that I root for a team whose ownership and management team rarely make risky moves. That’s just who they are. Can’t live with that? Let your wallet do the talking and they may listen then.
Need clarification re the Cleveland tweet and an outfielder – do they mean St Louis obtaining an outfielder or trading one? Sure hope it’s the latter because we have enough stinkin’ outfielders!!!
Good article by Bernie. Spot on.
A huge part of being a real professional is acting like one is all phases. In this case it means you understand that you’re not getting the job done in the 5 slot so you move down in the batting order. You want the 5 slot? Produce.
And Matheny needs to put on some big boy panties and manage his club house.
I agree there’s a serious possibility of stagnation.
And competing in this mediocre (at best) division this season increases the likelihood of management not being decisive either way. Any other division and it’s clear that significant changes need to be made. But management can say that they just swept competitive Colorado and split the series with competitive Arizona so see how close we are. (I happen to think that’s a mirage.)
Re re-signing Lynn – I don’t follow the markets much but am very concerned about the rotation going forward. Martinez isn’t reliable enough for a #1. Wainwright will never be Waino again. Wacha’s health. Leake is up and down. Lynn is a known commodity that I wish had the Leake contract instead of Leake. But he doesn’t.
I agree with your take, mike.
I’m happy to keep Lynn as long as he’s extended.
As far as what Cardinals’ management is thinking at the trade deadline, posts far more reflect the poster’s mindset and viewpoint of management than it does what they’re actually doing. We’re all talking in a vacuum.
Ronnie Williams is Peoria’s scheduled game two starter. Warner scheduled for tomorrow.
I tend to get enamored with pitching performances but managed to restrain myself this morning. 🙂
Woo Hoo!!!
I like this double play. Let’s get Lance the win!!
Double play. I hate this team
Loved listening to Edmonds talk about how the cut off outfield grass impacts the ball
