A: “Residual damage from the Matheny era, must be.”Matheny was the one who benched Fowler beginning June 12, in favor of Bader. Fowler started just 11 games over the next 5 weeks.
Shildt benched Bader for Fowler, as soon as he took over. Fowler then started 15 of the next 17 games. Then Fowler got injured, and the Cards went 32-20 the rest of the way.
This is why I do not trust Shildt to be smart about Fowler. Because he wasn’t remotely smart in 2018.

Neill/JMartinez duo in RF if JMart not traded.If Fowler stays you should trade JMart.I just dont see the Cards keeping Fowler/JMart/ONeill along with Bader and Ozuna since Munoz can play some OF .It would be beyond stupid to push ONeill back to AAA because of worthless Fowler and granite glove JMart.Before any more pins are stuck into the Gregerson voodoo doll, Goldy didn’t want Gregerson to give up #44. He even refused the Cardinals when they encouraged him to take one of the few remaining non-retired single digits numbers. He randomly chose #46.
How many great players have donned #46? Not many. Cooperstown is littered with # 44’s. Give it up, Gregerson!!
IMO, if #45 was good enough for Gibson, #46 should be fine for Goldy. Lee Smith was a pretty good #47, too.
On the #44 being made famous by others, that is true. But this way, he can make #46 famous himself!
P.S. I admire his humility.
I am a little humiliated I poo pood getting Goldshmidt to the point I considered Kyle Seager’s and Brantley’s prospects with similar enthusism as Goldy. Whitey said to trade multiple good for one great after he acquired Jack Clark.

#46 is just such a bland number. It lacks zest and appeal. That’s why the great ones totally avoid it’s use. If I were Manfred, I’d make all cub players wear #46. I would love to see Goldy slap on #33 if Gregerson were not to relinquish #44.
I wonder if getting Goldschmidt means that we won’t even try for Arenado or whatever his name is from Colorado since we have the young guy coming up through the ranks that plays 3B, as then if we’d want to keep Goldschmidt around after next year then we wouldn’t have anywhere to put the guy in the minors when he’s ready for the majors unless that’s a few years away…
One of my all-time favorite seasons is 1963, with one reason being the numerology of that year.
First, the NL home run title was a tie between two legendary #44’s, Hank Aaron and Willie McCovey. And how many home runs did they each hit? Why 44 of course.
Also both the NL and AL MVPs wore number 32. Can you name them? (No cheating by looking them up – take a guess).
Very clever, ShakenBake, but all of the inventiveness in the world is not going to spice up #46’s dreary aura. The only number as insipid as #46 would be #94. I firmly believe that at the end of the day, our newest Bird is going to abandon #46 for a more flavorful identifier.
Great trivia, BicycleMike! I can see why you have bamboozled everyone thus far with your question. Maybe a couple of hints are in order? One of these players was born in the great city of St. Louis and left us at a very tender age due to cardiac arrest. The other MVP refused to pitch in Game 1 of a world series due to religious beliefs.

In a weird coincidence, new Nats signee Patrick Corbin also met with the media on Friday – wearing his new #46.

LoganAlpha, there is no telling what will happen next year at this time. The team will have a lot of flexibility but a lot of needs to cover. Should be interesting.
I like the Goldschmidt quote in the PD this morning – “I don’t know of a player in baseball who doesn’t want to play here.”
I encourage folks to listen to the entire press conference, as Goldy was impressive. But this was not a particular highlight, IMO. It was “tell them what they want to hear” rather than reality, to an organization stung by Giancarlo Stanton’s refusal a year ago to accept a trade there. (Granted, there have been key personnel changes since then.)
I also like the video floating around with Goldy running into all the school kids in a hallway within the stadium. The high 5s and the picture he posed with them. Class act. Great addition.

One thing is for sure, the Cardinals are going to have to go into next offseason knowing exactly what they are going to do the minute the world series is over.
Unless the FO goes the rest of way and finishes the job the Cards will be watching some other team having a WS victory parade.
I’m more optimistic about this season than I have been the past three years. Hopefully, they’ll makes some more good trades and pick up a FA or two.
Remember when Willie McGee came up in 1982. They gave him #51 and I’m sure he could have requested a different number eventually but he just kept it.
