Laugh all you want wagee but Waino is no Spring chicken and was near a 100 pitches. He should have been pulled after the single to open the inning.
Diz, I agree. Wainwright deserved better. Bad defense, weak hits finding holes, and the ump was imbalanced I thought. Isn’t Wainwright the vet, not Rodríguez, who should be getting more of the borderline calls? At home? If he can have one more good start before playoffs, I’ll be optimistic he can carry it into the playoffs. That said, I would have pulled Wainwright a little earlier than Shildt did today.
I’m more inclined to playy Martinez at first and bench Carpenter. He is something like three for his last thirty-four with zero power, almost no RBIs. He isn’t the best fielding first baseman around. He and Martinez have the same fielding percentage—-but Martinez’s last error was May 28. He seems to have gained some confidence with the glove. Right now, Carpenter is a liability at bat and in the field. 149 Ks. Needs to sit down for a few games to get his groove back. He hasn’t been the same since he was hit by a pitch.
I wanted to bench Wainwright. These two starts have been very fortunate because they have come just as our rookie corps has floundered a bit. He’s earned his way back into the rotation. But, I do think 90 is enough.
LOL, perhaps we have the next manager of the Cardinals right here on this very board. Isn’t it nice to know that one can always appear to be 100 percent right after the fact!!!
BTW, my highlight of the last two games was that Melancon was the loser in both. He drove me nuts that year he had 51 saves for the Pirates. He just never appeared to have closer “stuff” but dominated in that year.
wagee, the game’s color commentator(AJ Pierzynski) said the same thing. He even began the 7th by saying that at Wainwright’s pitch count, he figured Waino would be pulled at 1st batter on. Later he said he was surprised Wainwright was still out there.
Another one who was surprised was me.
But with the way the bullpen got taxed in Gant’s 2 2/3-inning start (or at least most of the bullpen that can be trusted to take the mound in a close game), Schildt likely figured Waino was his best option.
I thought Waino was in one batter too long but most managers will go longer with an experience starter. And it was no like they were hitting bullets off him.
I think the “error” by DeJong came after the ball glanced off the tip of Gyorko’s glove. Looked like in the replay that the ball cut to the right after it went by Gyorko. I believe they called it an error then changed it to a hit. anyway all the runs were earned according to what they showed.
Encouraged by the last two outings by Hudson. Appears to be pitching with confidence again. Growing pains. We could be looking at and 8th 9th combo of Hudson and Martinez. Hicks has had a lot of appearances for a 21 year old rookie.
I think I would also get O’Neill in the game. He is taking a lot better at bats.
What was wong with Wong. We used to have a pitcher named Bill Wight. If we still had him we would have a Wight and Wong.
Here’s is to hoping O’Neill has figured things out, and is the starting right fielder the rest of this year and beyond.
Wagee, I believe it is only a matter of a short time until the trend of the MBA GM makes its way into having MBA types as managers. Given that, you are right. I might be the next Cardinal manager!

I’ll take the DH Carp at 1B over Bozo Martinez. Bozo is a butcher on the infield but to his credit has surprised me in RF with decent D.
Yes Carp is struggling but we need him right for a possible post season. I believe he stands a better chance of finding his stroke in the batters box than on the bench. A day off? Sure, but nothing extended.
The anatomy of a slump. It is my opinion that slumps such as the one Carp is presently mired in, can be substantially cut in duration. And the team that finds the cure will have a huge leg up on all of it’s competitors. I would start the process by hiring a few of the very finest psychologists that money can buy to become very intimate with the team.
Too bad we traded Luke Voit. lol
Adams has had some key hits within the last week. I know you don’t want to risk Carpenters underrated glove but why Not play Adams a couple of games. It’s likely we’re going to make the wild card and Adams defense is ok at 1st. (cue the guy to prove me otherwise because I didn’t look it up). Just what I’ve seen with him as a redbird. For a bigger guy his pretty nimble and his speed was a tad underrated.
