We could add Avilan and Sipp and be way ahead of last year. I don’t mind avoiding Britton and Miller at 3/36 or wherever they sit right now. I say remember Cecil and learn from it.
They are set until they unsettle things. The right message was sent to Fowler and O’Neill. They are battling for left-handed relief. The waters for Miller are too deep and troubling. Try Holland for three years. Smith would be the play, but the Giants want someone (Flaherty) we won’t give. Under those circumstances, doing nothing seems fine.
I am a little humiliated I poo pood getting Goldshmidt to the point I considered Kyle Seager’s and Brantley’s prospects with similar enthusism as Goldy. Whitey said to trade multiple good for one great after he acquired Jack Clark.
When Elledge was in Springfield, his “deceptive” delivery was so slow runners seem to run at will. This will be something to watch.
I believe Fowler’s off-season and mindset were derailed by the intense anger our country was going through. I feel his family situation forced him to confront and take a role in political issues. A person cannot maintain the degree of focus his profession requires when one’s brain is constantly producing massive amounts of cortisol. I am not taking a political side here, but I believe his work was negatively affected by his personal life.
Weaver hit a bump. It is expected for young pitchers, and there is every expectation that he should learn and grow from this. A slightly better version of Weaver before his maddening troubles is a very valuable starter.
I like Wainwright because he would provide ace-like production until his elbow balks again, and then one of the future starters slide right in.
Ross very well could provide us with way more poor innings clogging the staff with an overpriced cast off.
Waino has led many staffs, but Ross has rarely been a part of a winner.There are at least three young catching prospects at A and below who could merit discussion very soon.
I like Helsley by the way, but he is more Genesis Cabrera territory in the mid to late teens with Lane Thomas, Dylan Carlson, Patrick Wisdom, Luken Baker, Randy Arozarena, and the great Nunez all way ahead of Helsley.
Helsley does not strike me as someone who could come in throwing gas out of the pen with much success. He sits 93 to 96 most of the time and his storied triple digits are usually not at all pinpoint and a contrast to the off speed stuff he works off.
I fear the love everyone is showing Helsley is somewhat overblown. There is a lot of Dennis Dove there. A high effort straight fastball often wild and high out of the zone now with lingering injury questions. I’ve been following but not voting since I’m catching up every few days, so ignoring my view is understood, but I’ve watched him three or four times & he reminds way more of Dove though his delivery is more Rosenthal.
Is it possible he is playing first to add that versatility because third seems to be blocked at every level ahead of him? He may still have a future with multiple options.
Darren Serferina is a better prospect than Valera. I like him a lot. I think he was world’s better than Alvarez. He plays third well also. With Shrock and Sefarina, Valera is getting passed and doesn’t offer much. Wong, Carpenter, Goryko, Munoz,Shrock, Sefarina, Caldwell,Young, etc… Valera needs to be dealt.
Big tall guy who seemed to lose his mechanics, but he may be a better prospect than Lucas. It would appear we dodged the we’re gonna lose three more good prospect bullet completely.
His stock sure would rise. His glove is well regarded. We have acquired and signed so many guys I am curious about at short with Rayner, Arias, Martinez, added to Sosa, Perez, and Robertson making AA down to Peroria really interesting.
I feared Reyes would follow Motte and lose five or six miles per hour off his fastball after Tommy John surgery, but the more I think about it, I think the rise in velocity and drops conversely are largely a matter of confidence. Some pitchers who knew they were throwing with minor tears see a rise in velocity after the surgery. Pitchers like Motte who suffer a more sudden tear have a natural drop.
The talk has been that Reyes is looking electric makes me think that greater forced caution early may be wiser than jumping on the enthusiasm of good health now.There is a considerable difference in his four seam at 88 and at 93. He has worked in the upper 80’s for years with the two seam and cutter. I have a lot of confidence in him. You know he sees himself as the ace and would love to show us and Carlos that there is a competition and it wasn’t just handed to Martinez in the way it appeared to be. I am sure Wacha feels the same way, I would love for Weaver and Mikilos to be a part of that discussion, and the best starter in September may be one of three guys (Reyes, Flaherty, or Hicks) not yet in the rotation.
Plummer, Denton, and Perez have really hurt us along with the loss of picks. They don’t mention Montero or Yepez. Carlson and Hicks could make this list look silly by themselves.
If Fernandez recovers fully, he would make quite a difference.I can’t believe every other team has superior talent to our group even looking negatively. We are top heavy, but that is a good thing.
If Waino gets up to 92 or 93, he is the ace of the staff. It creates a different plane for hitters to watch. The shredder at MLB Network had him a top ten starter two years ago when he was hitting those speeds. I don’t think his secondary offerings have suffered like his fast ball; they may have been fine tuned. Turning our sixth best starter (respectfully generous) into a number one is season changing. He is going all out because of this roster churn mantra Mo seems committed to. There has to be some value in reaching iconic stature, and there has to be longevity to get there.
I think the late Martinez promotion to Memphis says they see him as a prospect and offered a way to salvage a lost season.
Perhaps it’s speaks to Jenner’s status, also.After a flurry of trades and rule 5 picks, the Sprngfield outfield could have a few names we haven’t been discussing.
