Unfortunately Gant will beat out Hudson if they are comparable due to team control.
Gant making a dozen starts then being flipped for a pair of A ball starters with upside to a hopeful contender who suffers a significant injury. Hudson makes the next twelve, and he shifts to the pen as Reyes makes the final eight. That is my ideal number five starter if Martinez moves to the pen.
We fill in some of the minor league gap at A ball. Hudson makes twenty starts and still has 35 to 40 innings for the stretch and playoffs. Reyes conserves innings and builds strength until the end.The point seems to be the absurdity of today’s contract sizes. Our human infatuation with stars and willingness to pay unreasonable prices to see them is sheer stupidity. Still spending that kid of cash seems not only reasonable but wise from the FO point of view. One game’s salary at that money would be life-changing money for most of us.
Gregerson is clearly disappointing, but any value the team gets could be worth millions of dollars. What if he only misses a third of the season. A half war reliever is worth four or so million dollars. Maybe he could be Norris in reverse.
Perhaps the reason he is out there is that he can’t be had for less than the mega deal he wants.
Eventually the suitors will go there own way and some lucky (unlucky) team will slip out of the bar at 2am wondering how they ended up with the hot chick. That rarely ends well, but sometimes people do crazy stuff.The Cardinals do claim they have reflected that those big money, long-term deals rarely work. I believe that they are done with those type of deals completely until their model tells them a player is projected differently.
They have effectively positioned themselves as willing suitors who will not waver from their model, so when they do bend, it will seem like the ultimate gesture on their part to said player and agent.Albert Kaline and of course Albert Hrobosky. Those open a can of worms and seem like an unnecessary risk when Mean Al might start tracing IP addresses.
People might be shocked at how seemlessly Edman could slide in at short for a month or two sparking the team.
I wrote Fowler off completely. I now look at him as a reclamation project we picked off the scrap heep for free.
If he spent time working with Bonds this winter, that at least meant he spent time working.
I’m thinking .285/.370/.400 and we’ll all be pleased. If he plays like last year, the job will be handed to O’Neill or Martinez to avoid an insurrection.Carlos is number one if everyone pitches up to their potential. Reyes is his biggest threat, but I don’t count him as a part of the rotation.
The funny thing about Nagowski is that he just appears to be the best player in the field in warm ups. He has that slick left-handed first baseman style. Just watching him move around, he has the power, style, and pizzazz of greatness, then you find out who he is and instantly discount him. You realize he bats right-handed, and forget about him completely.
Cecil felt he rediscovered his curve last spring. He didn’t. There is every chance he will find it this spring and earn his money if he gets a chance. There is zero chance if you cut him now.
Reyes, Hudson, Cabrerra, Gomber, Ponce De Leon, Gant, Woodford, and Evan K all seem like they are priority AAA starters. Injuries may happen, but one or two of the free agents could surprise also.
I think it could be time to simply take the best arms North and let development be damned. Is it even possible that they would put Reyes and Hudson in the pen and let Hicks start at Memphis? It seems to me that boat had already sailed.
Wouldn’t Gomber or Cabrerra actually be very close to whoever we could trade for? Gomber has the big breaking pitch, and his fastball spiked up when he pitched in relief.
I want Harper, but a dramatically improved Fowler, a healthy Reyes, a healthy Wacha, a healthy DeJong, an improved bat from Wong, plus the two big adds make us seem more than a couple wins better.
Too bad we have so many question marks. It makes it tough to stand pat when we may already be standing on the peak. The fog could easily result in a fall with each step we take from here on out.
We seemingly will have to make a big deal with all the arms and outfielders we have. Unfortunately our dreams could end up with two or three Matt Adams type trades at the end of Spring.
I personally spend way too much personal time and energy concocting huge Cardinal blockbusters in my mind. It brings me countless hours of joy.Of course Reyes and Hudson should start. I hope our rotation remains in tact so that those arms will be additions rather than replacements.
My sense of optimism is fueled by a bullpen of Reyes, Hudson, and Hicks combining with Miller and one more of those we’ve mentioned in trades at the end. Leone or Gregerson would be icing. Gallegos seems to be another huge piece.
I agree with everything you are saying. My point is there are no deals in place or rumored. It would appear that the teams in question value their players differently than you (and the Cardinals) do.
The other issue is that teams are looking to add. There are free agents who will sign. That makes 40 man spots a situation where a two for one is really a two for two because the team would have to release a player. That brings us back to one for one or trading better prospects farther away from the big leagues.
I agree, but getting Smith or Rogers for Gant, Helsley, or Ponce De Leon is a dream, too.
Who is it then? To have talks, there has to be give and take. Other teams have 40 man roster issues also. They may not be too keen on the three for ones we dream on.
The Giants have an All Star caliber closer with better stats than Britton or Miller. Do you believe they are dreaming on Gomber?
With the seemingly large number of minor league free agent pitchers on the Memphis roster, it seemed we were poised to trade some young arms.
The other side may be that the two or three extra guys might be an attempt to hit on a hunch and make up for the recent drafts. If one or two guys develop, the effects of the drafts are lessened somewhat.I fear the Phillies are pushing Britton into stupid money, and we have too many prospects we won’t deal. Three years is too risky, but a two year 30 million might be where that market stands. Guys are getting three years. The money for two years seems ridiculous until you subtract the value keeping Dakota Hudson or Jack Flaherty bring.
If you were the Giants or Twins, you demand one of them because you only need guys better than what you currently have. Both teams have solid rotational pieces already in place.
By the way, Gregerson has more saves than Miller (66 to 53), and Gregerson was brought in as a closer option. Injured Gregerson won’t make our roster. A healthy Gregerson brings the same expectations our FO expressed when we signed him.Can we afford Gregerson the same confidence. If similarly aged guys have similar injuries, shouldn’t we be willing to bet that we could be adding two solid late arms. Gregerson has to be rehabbing like his career depends upon it.
