Ricky Horton pretty complimentary regarding Urias. He knows a thing or two about baseball talent. I’ll have a chance to see for myself in about a week.
We are going to expect an unabridged scouting report on Mr. Urias, amongst others, sometime later next week, UncleDenny.
For somebody who didn’t an NRI, Scott Hurst has gotten himself a lot of playing time in big league camp.
Cardinals pitching yielded five home runs as St. Louis lost 9-5 at Lakeland to fall to 3-5-2 on the spring. Of the five StL pitchers to take the mound, only Connor Jones got off unscathed. In unpleasant synergy, Wainwright was tagged for three doubles and a homer. Gomber yielded a double and three homers. Ravelo and Wong went deep.

C27, a lot of guys are getting the chance to start this spring. Still three weeks to go to sort it all out.

We are still in the early stages of games and S T IMo… pitchers are still “working” on new pitches and seeing how they play in games or are maybe being instructed to focus on certain things. The regulars are playing every other day and even then kids are at best starting every other day and coming in mid game on the next.
I will wait a while before i start to have any major concerns
Having said that, some of the bullpen pieces are a bit troubling seeing as they are supposed to not know when they are coming in so the mid innings guys i would always like to see a bit more from earlier on
Waino has looked pretty good IMO…still seems to have enough to give us 5 but we will see how his endurance goes even in ST
And talk of giving someone else a chance? Come on, Ponce, Hudson, Woodford, Gomber and Gant havent looked much if at all any better as of yet

Jager is correct. It is really difficult to gauge ST statistics as a predictor for the regular season. The pitchers are tinkering with new pitches or arm angles, the hitters might be trying a different approach, and they both are facing a different level of competition than they will face once the games start counting.
I’m sure the coaches know what they are looking for or at least I hope they do.

i tend to agree, however i would say that in that last week or so, i do start to pay attention to the team and the stats a bit more…that is when the team is supposedly gearing up so a week long slump in the last week of ST games for individual performances would bother me as much as it would during the early season
Next week I’ll be worried about pitch count.
My whole worry with the whole early bullpen-k era is pitchers don’t know how to pitch through adversity. Flaherty had shown he’ll K a bunch of guys but they won’t let him or he feels he needs to go 6. The Phillies announcers say he looks like a young Max though.
Dallas would be a welcome addition IMO.
In my view, there are two different kinds of players in camp. There are the guys who have clear jobs. Then there are the guys competing for a roster spot or are coming back from injury. Stats for the first group can be ignored for the most part, but for the latter group, every appearance matters.
On individual players, Waino was not very good yesterday, but the game was not on TV, so we could not see him. Even he is trying a new pitch, which tells me he isn’t that confident in what he had. Still plenty of time for someone else to step up if he isn’t the best choice to start.
For example, from among the name players last spring:
Worst hitters (BA .220 or worse): Gyorko, Wong, Pham
Worst pitchers (ERA 4.60 or higher): Brebbia, C Martinez, Mikolas, FlahertyJack Flaherty looking good today…he struck out 7 in a row and 9 through 4 innings on under 70 pitches.

So you’re saying that an addition would be welcomed?
I just don’t want past performances earning spots in the rotation. Wainright is one of my favorites all time, but he should have to outpitch the competition, which by the way has been so so lately.
Flaherty was great today. Call me crazy, but can you say Cy Young candidate? In the minors his control was much better. I look for that to improve this year.
