No I appear to have made an oversight. I thought he was added before the rule 5. It seems odd he wasn’t selected since he could be a surprisingly effective Maness-type for someone.
Artie Reyes is on the 40 man and not likely to beat out Lucas, Wick, Poncedeleon, and a slew of others.
This was a major move without a doubt. Randel could end up being huge for Toronto. Closers are made though talent, health, and opprtunity. Leone could easily be our closer, plus we gained back three huge players in addition. We get Greene, we get the second round pick that Holland would have cost us, plus we get the starter who falls into our lap with the 17 million we saved. That starter could be a Cashner for the rotation or a Morrison or Lind adding left-handed pop.
If we pull off getting Robertson for a trio of pitchers like Brebbia, Meyers, and Reyes (The irony of including Brebbia is too awesome) we would solidify our pen and open spots for the other additions.I think the Memphis shuttle comment infers that the 13th guy will be organizational guys who are not in a rotation until those plays dry up.
I would guess Lucas, Wick, etc…would be the first calls rather than more talented rotation guys. I would also guess younger guys with lower inning limits like Hicks and Fernandez may be the first to get pulled from rotations because this doesn’t diminish their perceived trade value like it night for Hudson or another guy trying to prove he is a starter.
Reyes should take a few rehab starts to work command and build strength. I would guess they could even burn an option since he figures to stick. Reyes could become a long fireman until he moves towards the back end.
If he were to emerge as a top of the rotation starter, that would Trump more conservative plans.I expect a quality starter to be added if a Cashner, Vargas, or Tillman have to settle for a one-year seven or eight million dollar deal. A value play could take the form of a Morrison or the like on the offensive side.
In honesty, I don’t really want at bats taken from Grichuk or Martinez. I like Voit as much as Morrison.It is clear we are poised to strike, but the transcendent deal hasn’t ever materialized. We thought it was Price and died a little when that fantasy fizzled. It never was what we dreamed. It happened with Hayward, but the story was the same and bullets were dodged.
Leake and Fowler were decisions the FO wouldn’t make again, and they aren’t.
I find the finger on the trigger while they hold to the plan formula to be intelligent.
If posters really don’t expect them to go for it every year, that standard is below that of the FO. I can’t remember a year that the expectation wasn’t that we were going for it.We may not add anyone else. We fawn all over our top prospects and then become enraged when we create an environment creating opportunities for their development and future stardom.
Why trade Hudson and Helsley for Colome when both are better? Why sign Mustakas when he would simply take ab’s from Goyrko, Carpenter, and Martinez?
Acquiring Stanton, Ozuna, or Archer is one thing. Basing business decisions on our degree of boredom is quite another.
Do I want Albers? Well sort of, but I really would be thrilled if Poncdeleon won that spot. I prefer a riveting March over an exciting January.
Simply look to who missed bats. Hudson likely remains in a rotation for this reason. Beyond that, look to whoever in the system is striking out more than 10 per nine. Those will be the guys who prove the FO is spot on. History says experience is not the key. Think about Worrell, Lahti, Wainright, Martnez, Rosenthal, Reyes, etc..
While the pundits laud the Giants, we all know that probability says this is going to end very poorly for the Giants. They had to do it, but I am pleased they were forced into this. Take that Jeffrey Leonard’s ghost. (My apologies if the rumors of Leonard’s demise are exaggerated.)
This is all posturing with agents while at the same time sending a very positive message to the players in the organization.
I don’t understand the number of people who call the FO idiots for not going out and publicly stating: our players are grossly inadequate, and those who have some talent are going to have their lives, futures, and careers placed in serious jeopardy due to injury. We really like the guys who aren’t on our roster, and we are hoping to create a situation where we can burn up our monetary assets while forcing ourselves to release a few players we have invested in and developed to the point they can help other orgsnizations.On one hand, Holland might be looking for four years while the Cards are offering two. Neither side really wants three years. This seems to be a desperate situation.
Yet it appears we may be able to create three or four legit closer options from Reyes, Hudson, and even Fernandez later on, while Helsley, Hicks, Poncedeleon, Tui, Lucas, and Brebbia get to compete for bullpen roles leading to closer.
Lyons and Gregerson may very well be far superior to Reed. It seemed like he was never a key to the Red Sox pen down the stretch. If anyone could have some use pains that gave our FO a moment to pause, Reed would qualify since he has always been happy to pitch back to back days.
Tui,Reyes, Hicks, Helsley, Hudson, Poncedeleon, and Fernandez could be interesting in September.Our pitchers survived unscathed beyond Reyes. We spent wildly on International guys and had a number of guys like Young and Kninzer surpass reasonable projections. We invested heavily in younger position players who haven’t panned out but still have prospect sheen
To the contrary, the Jays and Orioles are fulfilling commitments to fans and players. They should be commended. This popular idea that you only go for it when you are at an apex and your competition is down goes against the core principles of sports. Losing sucks and is contagious. I would avoid it at all costs.
Sometimes you go with the kids. Sometimes you go with reclamation projects. You always go for it, or you stop charging people unreasonable prices during years you are not trying to win a championship. Since the latter never happens, you maintain your character and try your best.This was about the point where we argued if Matt Morris was a true ace. Wacha would be our number one if Carlos wasn’t around, and he is actually an All Star pitcher who is just reaching his apex. We just have followed him so long that we have lost our excitement about him becoming an ace. He has not. I bet he intends to be near the top of our rotation.
A lot of questions is a good thing. We have options. This is not a case where we have Alan Babes, Morris, and Osborne and little else. We run deep with guys who could be solid threes. A scout for Houston once argued with me that five threes are the better than having aces and back end guys.No one knows our system better than us. I would take your opinion over any blogger. I love reading about the birds from any source, but I trust opinions of people like you, BobReed, CC, and others over any “expert” opinion.
I was excited when we acquired Orlando Sanchez. I dreamed on Mike Calise playing third base someday. I cried a little when Leon Durham was traded. Jerry Mumphrey was my favorite Cardinal when he played for Tulsa.
You are right. No one can follow even two organizations to the degree we follow this one.
Those are the two choices for sure, but they both carry potential to make contributions next year. Further, we need a pitcher and a hitter. We could and may forgo the hitter, but I could see three additions if there was space.
He is simply not as familiar as we are, and these mistakes seem blatant to us. The rest of the baseball world doesn’t even notice.
Robertson is trending up with fewer years than Holland or Reed. Further, we need to trade 40 man prospects if we are to continue adding players.
Solarte could very well bump Travis at 2nd. Donaldson is just so perfect for us, and Toronto has needs we can easily fill.
We still need to clear roster spots with a three for one which will allow us to sign the final pieces without releasing assets.
Even if we simply signed Cobb, Reed, and Morrison, we would have to give up picks for Cobb and at least two decent prospects from the 40 man roster.Oh I know why. Because Wong, Solarte, and Grichuk are better than Donaldson in terms of control. Plus they get a couple prospects too.
Watching the Mets collapse, I really believe you stagger your young starters. Let Weaver join the vets this year while Reyes and Hudson lock down the pen. Add Reyes next year while Hudson and Hicks contribute to the pen.
That is the very idea. Rehab and begin in the Memphis rotation. About the beginning of July, bring him up as a long fireman. As his innings decrease, allow him the opportunity to move to the late innings. This plan could build the innings to ensure he doesn’t have too great an increase next year. We want him in the 120 to 140 range total if he is to move towards the top of the rotation in 2019.
He won’t begin on time anyway, and someone may run with the job. Necessity may have a huge say in the manner of his use at that point.
