The Cardinals and Carpenter are going in opposite directions. I really don’t want Carp back soon if he keeps rehabbing like 2019 Carp. Don’t want Debbie Downer with the streak we are on.
No one wants the hitter we have suffered through, but why is it Ozuna, Goldy, Fowler, et all are capable of comebacks but Carp isn’t. Shouldn’t we all expect an adjustment back towards the mean.

A joke? Is Helsley better than any of the starters? How about any of our high leverage relievers? He’s a decent talent but coming back from injury, I see no problem with how he’s been handled. I very much doubt that Ryan sits around at night fretting about what role the team has him playing on a day to day basis. He’s probably just happy to have a role that the team sees as part of their future.
As for Carp, if you make the case that Edman has been the sole reason for the team’s good play of late and that Ozuna and Yadi’s replacements played no part either, then I guess you could call it causation. Otherwise, it’s the very definition of coincidence. 😉
I too am confused with the vague “jerking around” Helsley story line that some people favor. He is consistently pitching multiple innings and throwing in the 40-50 pitch range every fourth or fifth day. Please explain why it matters if it is the first through third innings vs. the fourth through sixth, for example?
Even when called up to St. Louis briefly, he still stayed on his schedule and pitched multiple innings.
Further, it seems like some are assigning blame for his inconsistent results to his role. If he can’t consistently get hitters out, that is a problem no matter what level he is playing at and no matter how many batters he faces each game.
Don’t get me wrong. I still have Helsley no. 5 in the system. But what worries me is his shoulder and his inconsistency. And I don’t blame it on his “role”. His “role” is getting outs and he needs to keep getting better at that. He hasn’t had two consecutive scoreless appearances since May. (I watched his entire outing last night. Half his pitches missed the strike zone entirely, with many up in the zone. He also threw some really good pitches. Inconsistent.)
Helsley would not be the first formerly starting pitcher to play a relief role based on the needs of THE TEAM, even if he ends up starting later. For example, Carlos Martinez spent his entire first season in the majors in relief – because that is where he was needed. Trevor Rosenthal never went back, etc.
They may also be trying to craft his role based on how they see his shoulder responding. Remember that he missed half of last season and was again on the IL this season with shoulder soreness. So we aren’t talking about a guy who has no health concerns – and we don’t know what the medical team is recommending.
IMO, Helsley needs to lower his 4.98 Triple-A ERA and pitch well enough that he earns a spot in the St. Louis pen. Perhaps he can get the long relief spot if Wacha is traded.

I have been critical of the Cardinals missing out on Luis Robert but Adolis-Garcia actually has a similar skill set. He just hasn’t developed the consistency yet. If he could we would really have something. He isn’t getting any younger though.
The Sox probably had Robert in the bag long before he signed. That is unfortunatly how the Latin scene has been working. I for one will welcome the draft if it comes. However, the way the training centers work you will still have those strong bonds that seem to be developing as early as age 12.
I agonize at Garcia’s strike zone problems but don’t want to see him in another team’s uniform. The guy is a genuine 5 tool potential. Sometimes the consistency never comes but if it does in his case you are looking at a potential superstar.
I’d rather have a 21-year Luis Robert that’s destroyed every level he’s played at than Adolis Garcia.
I don’t get to see the Cards every day, maybe only once per week. But, I have been watching Carp while thinking that he, as a veteran, will work out of his problems. Yet, what I am seeing is a player who looks like he doesn’t have any focus. His swing looks loose and random, not actually directed at the locale of the ball. It looks like he is missing the ball by four to six inches above and below the swing. It also seems that his swing is the same wherever the ball is pitched.
Good hitters keep their eyes on the ball all the way through the zone, focusing on the point of contact of bat and ball. When someone steps away from the swing or the pitch (not just Carp), I assume that they have no focus on the pitch. It looks like they have given up any chance of hitting the pitch except luck.
When I look at the Memphis stats and see that Carp is 0 for 6 with three strikeouts at the AAA level, I just don’t see that he is ready for major league pitching. He may have good years of experience, but sometimes, people just lose it. I wonder if it is the shift. If so, learn to hit to all fields. But, show some sign that there is a focus.
Yep, I’d rather have Robert, too, but he cost over 20 times more to sign than Garcia. Time will tell if it pays off.
As far as their handling of Helsley I agree up to a point. When he was hurt he should be rehabbing back. And when your core bullpen can’t be cracked, he needs to relieve until brings his pitch count up. Starters are the pressing issue now as far as pitching goes. Too many bullpen games, and Arauz, Hauschild, etc. have been starting ahead of him? Why now, when Woodford is the only Memphis starter who appears capable of filling in if needed. It was nice earlier when we had PDL, Gomber, Reyes, then the need to start him isn’t as great.
