Saggese has a quick bat. It will be fun watching him mature..
Every time I see this new guy’s name I think of the Genesis song.
Too bad about Phil Collins. I remember hearing back in the day that his song ‘Something in the Air Tonight’ was the most requested and played song in St. Louis when it was first released. It was a Phil Collins song. No Genesis yet at that time.
Raniel Rodriguez is only a few months past being 17 years old and he’s OPSing almost .800 at Palm Springs. This is pure speculation, but it wouldn’t surprise me at all if he eventually starts getting some playing time in one of the outfield corners.
I’m hoping WDWJr hangs around for another 10 or 20 years.
bb and Jnevel, thanks for posting your take on what’s going on with Matthews. I’m still going to go on hoping that he gets his arm strength up so that he can be a 1 or 2 in the rotation. Wainwright’s curveball, when it was really on, was almost like an eephus pitch, IMO. I don’t know how he did it.
I’m going to love seeing Molina in the dugout. But I still want to see Oli stay on as manager.
What ever happened to the days of investigative reporting? Matthews pitched a gem last night, it was like he was pitching in 2024 again when he bolted through the system. But no explanation was ever given as to why his velocity dropped in 2025 followed by a drop in success. Is his velocity back up to 2024 standards? Were his coaches insisting that his velocity be lowered in 2025 so that he ocould concentrate on his breaking stuff? Was last nights performance a fluke, an outlier? I feel like I’m being left in the dark. And not a peep about Alec Willis. This kid looks like a stud. But there hasn’t been a word said about him that I can recall since ST. I’m going to guess that development staff is absolutely forbidden to talk to reporters. What else could it be? I know I’m sounding harsh. But Matthews pitched like a top of rotation guy last night. What’s going on?
Whitey was a fine manager. I think he won because of his ability to recognize real talent when he saw it, and get the most out of it when he had it. That’s a rare talent, IMO.
Craig Counsel is the highest paid manager in the game, and he has a 210M$ payroll to work with. And he’s 4 games out of first place.
I’m not criticizing Gary LaRoque, former Cardinals field director. But I can’t help but wonder if he didn’t stay around a few years too long.
I seem to be in the minority, definitely one of the least vocal about Marmol. But I like the way he manages. He’s more inclined to give the younger players a chance to show what they can do. I didn’t like LaRussa. Without Chris Carpenter, Dave Duncan, Molina, Pujols, Wainwright, McGwire and a whole lot of other really good players, he wouldn’t have won more than any other manager, IMO.

August 6, 2025 at 5:02 pm in reply to: St. Louis 2025 Game #116 thread – Wednesday, August 6 at Los Angeles Dodgers #289848The Cardinals had so many chanced to bring that 3rd run home. But no success.
The high point of this game has bee Leahy’s pitching.
August 6, 2025 at 4:59 pm in reply to: St. Louis 2025 Game #116 thread – Wednesday, August 6 at Los Angeles Dodgers #289846Smart move by Oli. Bunting Pages over to 2B makes more sense than waiting for VS II to move him over.
August 6, 2025 at 4:54 pm in reply to: St. Louis 2025 Game #116 thread – Wednesday, August 6 at Los Angeles Dodgers #289843This turning out to be a gift game to the Dodgers. The Padres should be mad at us, so far.
Liberatore holds onto his composure and the Dodgers are forced to live with a 1 run lead.
Uh-oh. Home run to Otani followed by a double by Betts. Can Liberatore keep his knees form wobbling?
The Dodgers must have the dumbest front office in the game. Sure. They throw big, big money around like its yesterday’s garbage, and they hire the best scouts that money can buy, and they buy any free agent they want at will. But to pay a player 70M$ a year for 10 years and then play him both ways, is just plain nuts.
Jordan Walker just hit another single. Good for him. Good for the fans. Those strikeouts wer4e demoralizing. Now if he could teach hmself to lay off of that low and outside pitch that is a foot off the lower edge of the plate.
Liberatore is going toe to toe with none other than Shohei Otani. If Otani is making 70M$, then Liberatore ought to be knocking down at least 35M$. Anything less than that is just not fair.
The Cubs have, reportedly, the highest paid manager in the game, and a payroll of 210M$ and they’re 4 games out of first place. The Padres have phenom manager Mike Shildt, BLM t-shirts and all, plus a 215M$ payroll, and they’re 3 games out of first place.
BTW, until the Cubs finally won the World Series in 2016, they had not won a World Series since before WWI (108 years).

August 5, 2025 at 11:41 pm in reply to: St. Louis 2025 Game #115 thread – Tuesday, August 5 at Los Angeles Dodgers #289784Home run by Contreras. The Cardinals are staging a comeback.
August 5, 2025 at 11:30 pm in reply to: St. Louis 2025 Game #115 thread – Tuesday, August 5 at Los Angeles Dodgers #289782Ryan Fernandez has been working hard to take himself off the map.
August 5, 2025 at 11:23 pm in reply to: St. Louis 2025 Game #115 thread – Tuesday, August 5 at Los Angeles Dodgers #289779In fairness to Mikolas that second home run by Mundy was a bit high, but it was barelytouching the outside corner of the plate. It was a tough ball to hit and Mundy hit it. I do get the impression that Mikoldas is another player who is just running out the clock while he collects his nearly 3M$ a month. Almost all of the other Cardinals players play like they really want to show what they’ve got and win.
August 5, 2025 at 11:08 pm in reply to: St. Louis 2025 Game #115 thread – Tuesday, August 5 at Los Angeles Dodgers #289777Siani would have caught that ball hot to he wall by the Dodger Pages.
Bernal and Josh Baez could improve the offense, cut they’re both borderline ready. I’m think that the Cardinals will keep thme both at AAA all of next year so that, if there’s a work stoppage in 2027, they can still play minor league ball. (I’m not completely sure of this, but I don’t think they can play if they’re on the 40 man roster when a possible stoppage begins.)
2027 is going to be about Arenado running out the clock and several of our prospects getting better such as Roby getting over his TJ surgery, Hjerpe working himself back to form, Matthews getting ready, maybe the final year of patience for Hence, Ixan Henderson, Jesus Baez, Blaze Jordan, etc.
The Cardinals should be back to their winning ways by 2027, and really competitive by 2028. But, IMHO, the biggest things to look forward to in 2026 will be continued maturity of Pallante and Liberatore. McGreevy looks like he’s already got his head screwed on pretty tight.
Dylan Cease looked pretty good yesterday (Sunday). Can’t understand why he hasn’t pitched better in San Diego. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the Cardinals take a chance and sign him this offseason unless, of course, he thinks he can get trick some other ballclub into overpaying for what is now an unproven pitcher..
Whatever happens. Please. No Hampson next year. He, unfortunately, could not hit an elephant’s ass with a handful of ricl. He does seem to be a really nice guy, though.
