If he retires today?
A friend of mine’s wife who is a ladue/clayton realtor said she showed a house to a former cardinal who was “around our age”. In the area last weekend. I instantly thought of him even though I’m 44 for full disclosure.
I think a small handful of teams might give him 3/4mm to hopefully platoon at 1B but its crazy to think that a guy who was a no doubt HOF 3 years ago is now on the fence if he retired today. Will he play well enough to get enough ABs to get to 400hr?

Never played in a World Series. Neither he nor Arenado were enough to get the Cardinals (or their prior teams) there.
Baseball Reference has a Hall of Fame Monitor. Among those close to Goldy are Matt Holliday and Edgar Renteria.
Arenado is up with HOFers like Billy Williams and Carlton Fisk.

I’ll probably get flames for this but if he gives us a home town discount why not give him a shot against lefties? Never going to happen but I hope he finds success somewhere.
In my view no. Edmonds has better power numbers than Paul along with 8 GG’s at the CF position and I don’t think he belongs either, but it wouldn’t at all bother me if both Jimmy and Goldschmidt sneak in there someday.
I think Goldschmidt falls a little short of the HoF. If he gets in it won’t be a travesty at all but, for me, nope.
IMO, the numbers he posted through 2022, his last MVP year, are enough to merit him being in the HOF.
I disagree with 1td about Edmonds. Edmonds should be in the HOF. I think he rubbed some of the voters the wrong way so they didn’t vote for him. Some of the comments he made while broadcasting about how he would start running to where he thought the ball was going to go before the pitcher even released the pitch were mind blowing. He said he could tell by what kind of hitter was batting and the pitch that the pitcher was likely going to throw. Head case and a–hole, LaRussa, might have hurt him. also.
If Arenado somehow doesn’t get into the HOF, then the HOF should be eliminated entirely for being a ruse.
I think Goldy will get in. He’s not a first ballot sort of guy, but he’s got the MVP and was consistently one of the best hitters in the game for about a decade. That counts for something.
In the post-steroid era, the difference between star player and scrub is closer than it’s ever been. Our struggles to find that next star show that it’s very difficult to be a 5+ WAR guy year in and year out. Goldy has done that, as has Arenado. I think both merit Hall of Fame status in the future (as does Edmonds, who was robbed early in the voting process).
I agree the Goldy might not be a first ballot HOFer, but I’ll be happy if he gets in on the first ballot. That decade in Arizona was one for the ages, IMO. Even his defense was electrifying during his best years. He even bailed Arenado out a few times later in Arenado’s both of their careers. The only downside I can think of is that Goldy never really seemed ‘hungry’ when he was here, and he never seemed to be a clubhouse leader or a ‘face of the franchise’ type guy. But that has no relation to his play even though it could cost him a few votes.
