That’s what’s called “getting serious” in the off season. The Phillies saw what they needed and went out and got it. For some reason the Cardinals are unable to do that.
I have given credit to the front office in the past and I’ll do it again if they please me. Goldschmidt was a good deal and we didn’t give up much but if he leaves after 2019 and we don’t win the WS it is a push as they day in bridge. The problem with junior and Juniorettes is that they make one good deal each off-season (though Heyward, Fowler, Cecil, Leake, Ozuna were all hailed as good moves and Mo said he was excited about the team, which suggests a very low baseline for success. The problem is they stop. That one player is supposed to lead them out of the wilderness. It doesn’t work that way. You can’t put on the brakes. In addition to Goldschmidt and Miller they needed to release Fowler, sign McCutcheon for right, sign Kimbrel and then you are ready to play baseball. But they came up short again. Let’s hope for the best and when they do something right again I will acknowledge it.
Good move.
What few games he closed last year it seemed like he enjoyed it…from his demeanor. I don’t think he has the mindset or the physical stamina to start all season succesfully.

It’s gall-darned not goll darn.

What would suggest to you that a thirty-three-year-old, mediocre player will make up 74 points in average against Braun?
I’m guessing that Cecil is in the pen along with Leone. Junior doesn’t eat salary very often. They’re not worthy of being on the team but they will be.

No, Kimbrel, Harper, Machado are not necessary. But releasing Fowler and signing, say McCutheon for right field would suggest they are not afraid of spending. Foolish spending like Fowler is not the answer but if they want the team to be a heavy favorite to win the division and make it to the WS they will have to change their approach. You can’t stop after Goldschmidt and Miller. They put on the brakes every year after one good acquisition and that’s why they miss the playoffs.

Somehow, you have misinterpreted my post. My point is that since they are cheap they will be reluctant or or simply refuse to eat his salary. If they weren’t cheap they would have released Fowler after the season and signed Harper along with Goldschmidt and Miller…THAT is not being cheap.

The question I have is, “Have the Cardinals ever benched a big salary?” Sure the Yankess and Red Sox do those things but would the Cardinals sit a 16 million dollar player?
Onyxgem:
The mound was at 15 inches for over a hundred years. Ruth, Gehrig, Cobb, Musial, Mays, Aaron and hundreds of others performed just fine.
If you want to lessen pitching changes: Raise to 15 inches
If you want to stop using six pitchers to win a 5-4 game” Raise to 15 inches
If you want to reduce pitching injuries to young pitchers: Raise to 15 inches
If you want to speed up the game: Raise to 15 inches
Lowering the mound was the worst thing baseball ever did.1. Universal DH…I could live with it.
2. Fewer mound visits…NO!
3. Three batter minimum…NO!
4. 20 second pitch clock…NO!
5. Trade deadline before the All-Star game…I could live with it.
6. Expanded roster..Okay but why would the owners want that?
7. Lower the mound!!! NO,NO,NO!!!!! It should be raised to fifteen inches where it belongs. It should have never been lowered. At fifteen inches we’d have baseball and not homerun derby.Harper and Machado were never at any time given even a moment of consideration. It was Donaldson and Goldschmidt and we ended up with Goldschmidt. Then Miller and off-season over. It’s a shame because they needed much more but it’s too late now. Hope for the best and get ready for the worst. Spring training is about here and I can’t wait. This is my fifty-sixth season. Go Cardinals!!!!
Kids:
I would caution you not count on Goldschmidt signing with the Cardinals then you won’t be so disappointed when he goes elsewhere.
NY:
I hope you’re right about the Cubs. I can’t wait.
Brian:
Granted, I missed the boat on Davis …BUT they didn’t acquire him. They have plenty of money to bring in the talent needed to win the WS. Yes, I wanted Goldschmidt a long time ago. We finally got him but for only one year. So, they must win the WS this year or it’s all for nothing. This front office just can’t get out of their own way. They continue to acquire the crappiest players (see Moss, Leake, Cecil, Fowler, Ozuna, et al) Then they claim they have no money to sign the big names. If they find someone in the front office who knows what good talent is and they get them for more than one year then they might be ready to compete with the big boys. We’ll see…I’m hoping.
Oh, they’re cheap alright. They should have released Fowler, signed Harper and Kimbrel and then they could put a team on the field worth watching.
But the Dodgers didn’t win the World Series.
No. Ozuna and the Cardinals officially broke when Mo called Ozuna out for not taking his rehab seriously. Ozuna reciprocated by refusing to rehab in Jupiter. Ozuna is gone after 2019.
Brian:
Junior keeps track of every possibility before any deal is made. He knew that Stanton was almost certainly NOT coming to St. Louis. He made the deal and Stanton refused. “Well, we tried.” And, if Stanton had come to St. Louis Junior knew he would opt out after three years so the Cardinals would not have been on the hook for the entire amount. No Junior was safe form a long-term expensive deal. But, if he is willing as some suggest then let’s see him do it. Sign Harper or Machado. If they have the money that they say they do then g for it. But STOP telling me how rich you are and how much money you have to spend and how dry your powder is if you are not going to do anything.
gscottar:
Very good article but they are done.
14Nyquist:
The Front office would like to win like all teams but the difference for the Cardinals is that they don’t care if they lose. They’ll draw 3.4 million every year so why should they spend. They can start a slug like Fowler in right field and still draw 3.4. Even if they had done nothing this off-season I doubt if attendance would have fallen to even 3.2. Let’s say it did and they lost 200,000 ticket sales. If each person spends 100.00 dollars per game for ticket, food, souvenirs taht’s 20,000,000. Why should they spend 35 million on Harper or anyone. Why would they spend 35 million to save 20? So before anyone starts an Arenado thread or a Trout thread…please don’t. There is no way Junior will EVER enter into a ten year agreement for 300 million…not EVER going to happen in this Universe or any other. They’ll pick up guys for one or two years every off-season then cross their fingers and hope for a miracle. But a long term deal for a superstar? Not a chance so forget it.
Pugsley:
I agree, this is Reyes’ last chance. If he can’t stay healthy this year then move on to someone else.
Robert:
As always your logic is flawless and you are probably right about taking the three pitchers over one outfielder but here’s a twist. If the Cardinals really want to get better and the Front Office has intimated that they do then let’s do both. Sigh Harper and all three pitchers. Let’s finally out a team on the field worth watching.
bccran:
Could be the folks making the projections do not think the Cardinals are as good as the Front office and fans think they are.
