Fowler doesn’t have to do anything to justify being on the roster nor does he have to do anything to even be on the roster. He is due 50 million dollars. Junior will not eat that or see him on the bench. He will be in right field so get used to it.

Goold has tweeted repeatedly lately that he thinks Gant will win the 5th spot because he is out of options.
At first glance lineup looks like it would be the typical starting lineup but then you get to the 5th spot and nope.
Muñoz looked like he was hurting pretty bad after getting hit on his hand. I think it was his left hand from the way he was holding it. If it’s broken, you have to feel for the guy. It would really be a big stback.
Would mean O’Neill is a lock to start with the big club if Munoz is shelved for a bit one would think.

wacha looked good today. our hitting was ok but we were helped out by some bad defense on the marlins side. if it just came down to straight talent, I think they would have some really hard choices to make with the bench. I know options and stuff like that will play into it also so will make it easier on them. I like munoz bat but im not fond of his defense. yea he can play lots of places but he cant really play any really well. I personally would like a left handed batter whether munoz is on team or not.

One thing that a few people have brought up that I think is important is who will be the backup SS. I don’t think anyone really feels comfortable defensively with Munoz, Gyroko, or Robinson at SS. I guess one of those guys could spell DeJong here and there but if Paulie were to go down for several weeks like last year who do we turn to? I hope this scenario doesn’t play out but you have to be prepared for anything. Ramon Urias could turn out to be an important player in 2019.
Urias has the bat but not mobility for short. Danny Mac asked me about this in last week’s podcast and my answer was Edmundo Sosa. By far the best defensive option but bat remains a question.
According to the out of town scoreboard, the Mets and Cards are tied 3-3 in 5th. (I am at Maryvale for Reds at Brewers today.
Good call on Sosa. Considering how Shildt seems to be committed to having strong defense up the middle Sosa might get the nod over Urias.
The Cards outhit the Mets 15-11 but can’t keep pace on the scoreboard. They fall 10-8 to fall to 3-4-2 on the spring.

2018…missed 7 weeks with fractured hand after being hit by a pitch. Besides that, perfect health.I’m not always an optimist about such things, but I wouldn’t worry one bit about DeJong’s backup. It would shock me if he has to miss significant playing time in 2019. As we can see, he’s been exceptionally durable for five years running, barring unavoidable traumatic injury.
For me the chief Cardinal concern is the same now as it was when the offseason started. The bullpen is possibly terrible, in there is no chance on earth that it will be an asset. In fact right now it looks potentially worse than last year, if such a thing is possible.
But! But there’s still three-weeks-plus before opening Day. Maybe the Birds will take my advice and leverage some of their fallow extra money, turning it into an excellent reliever (or two) like Joe Jimenez or Mychal Givens by accepting bad contracts from the Tigers and Orioles. Exchanging a pair of bad relievers for very good ones could add 3-5 wins to this year’s Redbird victory total. But it will take meaningful money, and probably a couple of mid-level prospects.
Roughly 40% of Cardinal innings will go to relievers this year, and the relief corps is frankly a mess. Not as atrocious as they looked today, but not good at all. Why the front office thought that ONE addition would fix the problem is beyond me. A band-aid for a bullet hole is bad enough, but a single band-aid for 4 or 5 bullet holes is pretty much inexcusable.
Bright side, that Tyler O’Neill kid is something special, huh?! Can’t wait to see the speedy slugger make those 150 starts in right field this year….
