<We’re now firmly holding on to a tie for third at .500. That is just where we want to be. A good June and we’re right back in it. No reason to fret or be angry. Where did all the optimism go to?>
I am still here. The NL Central is about the only division in baseball where there is a fight going on with four of the five teams at .500 or better and the fifth approaching that mark. Looking over the Atlanta lineup I am somewhat surprised that they aren’t leading that division and that may still happen. They really have a good balance of youth and veterans and I would not be surprised to see them move up in the playoffs if their pitching can hold together.
“cowardice franchise”
Could you define that term? I could not find it in my Funk and Wagnalls.I didn’t think this would be a pretty board this am (and it deservedly isn’t) but it appears that some are striving for new terminology to vent their anger.
I am beginning to think that there is some bad gree gree on batting #1. Dex took that place two games ago and so far he has struck out 5 times and been hit in the foot once while Carp has begun to look much better out of the #1 position. Now all the writers who said he HAD to bat #1 have to make up some story about how their theory is not wrong…..lol
“MM3, with all due respect (seriously, not sarcastically), I do live here, and no it doesn’t. On average, Cards games have 95%+ attendance, and they trailed only the Dodgers and Yankees in total attendance for 2018 with 3.4M. Cubs follow as #4.”
I think I failed to convey my message in my post. What I am saying is that one time out-of-town visitors looking forward to attending a Cards game with their family may have second thoughts after reading one or more headlines like the one I quoted. In this day and age, safety is becoming paramount and not something that can be assumed. When I was being raised in New Orleans I knew the turf and knew where and where not to go. I was a street smart kid because I was a kid of the streets but that was many moons ago and I would hesitate to visit any city with a reputation like Chicago, New Orleans or St Louis unless I was pretty well educated on when and where to go that would give me the least chance of being robbed, attacked or murdered. I don’t know any of that about St Louis so my only visits have been at 70mph on I-44, 55 or 70.
Only yesterday I was talking to my neighbor who went to a game a couple of years ago and stayed at a hotel near the stadium and had a great time until he returned to his car in the ’24 hour camera surveilled’ parking lot only to find it smashed up and robbed of every valuable in it. He thought he knew his way around having been there twice but at least he wasn’t attacked personally.
I still want to go to a game at Busch but need to find a tour group that delivers you right to the stadium and picks you up after the game. I know they exist but at the moment I am not medically ready for the trip.“2 dead, 10 injured in 8 separate shootings across St. Louis”
I was born and raised in New Orleans. There is a reason I no longer go there. Same for St Louis. This headline has more effect on attendance than a team not going to the playoffs.
“This fanbase of the Cardinals is too proud to let this thing slip to mediocrity and that isn’t being spoiled.”
Of course it is. If this was not a consistently winning team the ‘best fans in baseball’ would not be spoiled.“Hatred [in this case discontent] corrodes the container in which it is carried.” It seems as though The Cardinal Nation is developing some corrosion leaks. SAD to see. Funny how everything was shipshape at the beginning of the season. The acquisition of Goldy and Miller were well acclaimed by the masses but at the first sign of being human it becomes the problem of the front office. In my very narrow view what I see is a very spoiled fan base not accustomed to the vagaries of the game. Imagine how the Marlins, Royals and Orioles fans are feeling and how the Cubs fans felt for 108 years. Look at those 11 flags and be proud. After every loss the sun rises…….oh well, you know the rest of my rant………lol
Deleted.
Looks like Dylan Carlson is leading every stat known to man with Springfield.
7 man pen: Starting June 4, the Cards will have 20 games without a break followed by three days off in the next 8. May need another pen arm by then.
May 23, 2019 at 9:30 am in reply to: StL 2019 Game 48 thread: Tue 5/21 vs. Royals (moved to 5/22 evening) #91502Pretty tough comments there gscottar. Fraud?…really? Intestinal fortitude?..the couch coaches have very little clue what goes on in that clubhouse or front office. Cheap shots are easy but man, it is only a game so why be so hateful. Oh well we obviously view the sport in a different light.
Shildt did say yesterday between games that something has to be done with the rotation and to expect changes. I was hoping he would also try some experimenting with the lineup but, so far, it seems to be frozen in time. Goldy is my favorite but Goldy is having his down time after the initial weeks of the season but he is a very nice addition at 1B defensively and I feel that he will come around offensively. It is the strikeouts that make me cringe the most.
May 22, 2019 at 8:00 am in reply to: StL 2019 Game 48 thread: Tue 5/21 vs. Royals (moved to 5/22 evening) #91388I posted yesterday morning that this game would likely be affected by weather. A long line of severe thunderstorms was moving up from the Texas/Oklahoma area right through Springfield and across the state to St Louis.
Here is my ‘something learned new’ for today. How many will confess that they did not know this either:
Brian you are stuttering it appears….LOL. Thanks for the update. Did the surgery happen to be a lobotomy? He came to camp after having lost a ton of weight but was saying he needed to regain strength too and from there it apparently went downhill when Mo hit him with that 2×4.
Who is this Cecil you speak of. The FO has managed to keep him well hidden for this season so far. I think he is on the ‘mental’ IL. Gregerson is a goner and Leone may be back only if we have a slew of injuries. Actually I think we have one of the better pens around at this time. Miller is the most iffy one.
Don’t see a game 48 thread yet but the weather may play a big part. Here in SW Missouri we had a rough night and it is looking bad for this afternoon too. Not sure but it may hit STL area about game time.
After reading Hicks comments on his performance I think I will got with his explanation instead of those furthered here. He said fatigue was not a factor and he was not tired but that the hitters were holding off on his good pitches and hitting those in the zone. Even Shildt says that they had Hicks programmed for 40 pitches. It is what it is. Nobody comments on the fact that it was Miller who got us in a pickle to start with – 2 hits including a dinger. I was hoping to see some new blood and Carlos did a nice job in a near hopeless situation.
I’ll stay out of the Hicks debate as that is above my couch coaches pay grade. But I will say that either that HPU is crooked or the most incompetent person seen in that position in many years. Crooked – I doubt as he was pretty bad to both teams but he really pulled a lot of calls out of his derriere. In summary, he forwarded the case for electronic strike zone by at least two years. At one point Fox even dropped putting the strike box on the screen and I was thinking that MLB had called and asked for mercy…..but it did appear again later.
I like that the boys showed some spunk to come from behind but they sure missed some great chances in that first inning. Take a day off guys and come back fired up to beat the worst team in baseball a couple of times.
…”its up to the commissioner and his crew to stop this kind of stuff, to act in the best interest of the game.”
Willie we are way beyond “this kind of stuff” with the commish. We already have replay review, no blocking the plate, 2nd base slide rule, staying in the batters box, timing the pitcher and more on the way such as moving the distance to the bases and mound (I believe the Atlantic league is experimenting with that this year). When the DH hits the NL I may have to cash in my chips (close to that already). I cannot see supporting old veterans with big paychecks to swing a stick and never put on a glove.
Pssst don’t tell everybody but ESPN thinks that the Cubs are the only team in flyover country.
Pretty quiet here for a change. Winning helps soothe the psyche. I applaud the FO for those moves involving Martinez, Helsley, Leone and Gregerson. Piece by piece the pen is being built up to a strong unit. Hudson showed some spunk yesterday and I credit the pitching coach and Yadi for keeping him amped up enough after that 1st inning. The team rallied behind him and that counts for a lot.
How about the “Opener” discussion. Shildt says it may happen – or not. If it became popular it sure would change the pitching won/lost stats in a way. If a team uses an opener for an inning or two they would not have a chance to win the game but the 2nd pitcher (the REAL starter) could pick up a win with less than 5 innings. Hmmmmmm.
Please do post when they have the next winning streak. (or is that not a good time to criticize?)
Roofing Update: Evidently the troops also have weather radios. The roof was finished in 3 hours plus ground cleanup. Wonders happen when you have 13 people all working on a project – I miscounted earlier.
Glad the border patrol didn’t pass by. When I was driving a potato harvester in North Dakota I was doing rows right next to the highway and my three Mexican helpers were on the harvester doing their thing. A border patrol car passed on the highway just as I reached the end of the field and made a turn. When I looked back the harvester was empty. I had to wait 15 minutes for them to come out of the shelter belt.I’ll stand with Shildty until he swings a bat and misses or accounts for 9 hits and 7 runs in 1.1 innings. The same team that has a winning streak also has a losing streak and the attack dogs are unleashed. GO CARDS. Just got a tornado watch until 5pm but it looks iffy for us despite the NWS putting our county in it. We are now hyper on tornadoes so after an hour so I will tell the guys on the roof. By then they may be finished as on my last look they were about 60 percent done and the radar shows the storm to be be quite a way away – still in Texas.
Speaking of the roof job with rain threatening, I think they have devised a system to beat it. 10 guys on the roof banging away and they got it stripped in one hour and swear it will done before the first rain drop falls. If they hurry, I can watch the Cards game in peace….LOL
“Thrown out at third for the first out off a routine single when you’re down by 5 and the top of the lineup coming up. Huh? What am I missing?! It’s no wonder this team is spiraling out of control.”
What you are missing is the mantra that the Cards have to be ‘aggressive on the bases.’ If you are going to preach that then you need not criticize when, as is will sometimes, it fails. I can take it but the two bums in the booth have no room to criticize anything. An over the hill pitcher and a two time DWI driver have little room to make snide comments about that attempt to help the team.
Boy wouldn’t it be fun if Matheny and Mabry were still around to punch on? Folks this was a Miles Mikolas failure to launch and it was, thankfully, one of his few of that nature. But let’s look at the bright side – the bullpen – the did a terrific job to avoid a total embarrassment. Momma said there would be days like this and Momma, rest her soul, was always right. But I just looked out and the sky looks clear but it is too early for the sun to rise but I am not looking forward to today when the roofers will start banging and hammering hoping to beat a predicted rainstorm. Living in a tornado damaged house is getting a bit trying but the only thing I can hope for is the same thing the Cards can hope for — improvement. One day it will all come together. GO CARDS
