It is always about money. The $80 MM local TV deal from Oakland follows them to Sacramento, but not Vegas. Also, the 90 mile distance between Oakland and Sacramento is thought to be close enough that loyal fans would travel in-state to see them.
Good points Brian. Also, I think there may have been some kind of sweetheart deal on the lease between A’s ownership and the owner of the Sacramento ballpark.
For decades the Cardinal AA affiliate was located in Little Rock and called the Arkansas Travelers. They have had that name since 1932 and I believe it is the third longest nickname in minor league baseball. Unfortunately they are now affiliated with the Mariners.
The Brewers and the A’s played last night in Las Vegas. I didn’t think the A’s were moving to Las Vegas until 2028. Was that actually their stadium last night? Is it open already?
No the new stadium in Vegas opens in 2028. You might be wondering why the A’s are playing in a AAA stadium in Sacramento instead of just playing in an AAA stadium in Las Vegas. That is a good question and I don’t have a good answer even though I have follwed this saga rather closely.
Gscottar – I read that as “If things go well for Dobbins in his next start and not great for Leahy, Dobbins will join the rotation going forward and Leahy will be the new long reliever.”
I read somewhere else where the Cardinals were definitely going to a 6 man rotation. It wasn’t from Goold but I can’t remember where I saw it.
Hunter Dobbins’ next appearance will be as a starter. #stlcards plan to upshift to a six-man rotation in the coming week.

I have read in a couple of different places that the Cardinals plan to go to a 6 man rotation for the next several weeks. I will see if I can go back and find the link.
The Cardinals don’t have to announce anything until tomorrow since today is an off day but I would imagine it is Church up and Scott down.
We don’t have any good internal options for 3B. Saggese, Fermin, Urias, Mendoza, and Prieto probably aren’t much better than Gorman and the Cardinals obviously don’t view Jordan as a 3B because they haven’t been playing him much there lately down in Memphis. We are probably stuck with what we have for the rest of the season and maybe they will look elsewhere next year.
You remember in the old days when your TV went out you would call the repairman to come and replace the tubes or whatever was needed to keep it going. I know that my grandparents had the same TV for at least 30 years if not longer. Nowadays when your tv goes out there is a good chance you just toss it and go get another one at Best Buy. They have become disposable items.
That is is how pitchers are viewed now. Have them all throw 100mph knowing full well they are going to blow up and need to be replaced. Of course to do that you better have a large stockpile. In 2024 the Dodgers used 40 different pitchers. In 2025 they used 33. The Brewers used 32 pitchers in 2024 and 36 in 2025. The Cardinals don’t have that kind of depth yet but I am sure that is why just about every trade Bloom has done there was pitching coming back in return. I don’t like the fact that baseball has evolved that way but it is what it is.
Saggese has probably been the biggest disappointment in the entire team for me. Gorman has done as advertised so I figured Saggese had a good chance to be the starting 3B by June. Instead he flopped and is now in Memphis. Actually his entire season has been bad. He was so bad in the WBC he could barely even get on the field for Team Italy.
Urias is another one who had a chance to be the starting 3B but he has been both unproductive and hurt.
Tre Richardson was a very good college player at TCU. I saw him play against Arkansas here in the NCAA tournamanet a few years ago and he was the best player on the field. I was thrilled when the Cardinals drafted him and he has steadily been in my prospect rankings.
Hat tip to Dobbins again. Tonight’s game was less stressful than the Cubs game he closed out but once again he gives the rest of the pen the night off. That has a lot of value.

Absolutely, having too many good hitters will be a wonderful problem to have. For my money Herrera is borderline untradeable. I think he is one of the more elite hitters in the league. I think it was Bob Reed who put together an outline of how Herrera stacks up against the other elite hitters in the league over the last few years. It was eye popping.
I don’t think the Cubs are going to pull off a big rally today. They trail 16-1 in the 7th. Sorry Cubbies.
I am doing my usual Friday dinner of a large against the grain cheese pizza with a glass of diet mountain dew. For dessert I have one of those jj’s fried glazed apple pies purchased from the local grocer.
stl25, I acknowledge that Burly and Adams have a more similar stat sheet than I expected but I also expect Burly to have a better overall career. What it comes down to really is when are the Cardinals going to transition from “tear it down and hoard prospects” to “we have a core so it is time to add”? My guess is that will be in 2028 so Burly could go either way in regards to being extended or traded.
KCB, yes you could make the argument that Burly is blocking Herrera unless Herrera’s long term future is DH/C. If I am looking into my crystal ball I would say there is a good chance that both Crooks and Bernal are traded within the next 3 or 4 years. I think Rainiel is the long term catcher but we shall see.
After thinking more about it I am convinced the Cardinals are going to be sellers even if they are in playoff contention. Bloom has dropped several not so subtle hints that they are going to continue with the original plan despite the success of this year’s team. I could see them trading May, Jo Jo, O’Brien and Noot. I doubt if Urias or Stanek would have much value. I think the Cardinals trade deadline acquisitions will be promotions from Memphis. Guys like Mathews, Mautz, Gastelum, Baez, and Jordan could be moving up.
If they do trade O’Brien I still think a logical fit would be the Dodgers. I don’t know when their closer Diaz is set to return but O’Brien would be a good fit for them regardless. I really hope the Cards keep O’Brien but with the Dodgers having such a highly ranked farm system it would be interesting to see who we could get.
I think Burly is a better hitter than Matt Adams (unless Matt was facing Kershaw) but the Cardinals don’t have to extend him now. They don’t have to extend anyone now. They have time. I still don’t think he is blocking anyone though. Gurevitch is showing promise but he is a long way from the big leagues.
The Cubs pulled out a miracle win last night. Trailing 6-1 going into the bottom of the 7th they scored two in the 7th and four in the 9th to win 7-6. I hope that doesn’t ignite a hot streak. They get the lowly Giants this weekend.
We don’t have a lot of years control of Burleson. 27&28. 2 years same as Donnie. Burleson can’t hit lefties or field anywhere but first. He will be blocking someone better by the time he is a fa. Donovan was a much better player and we traded him.
I’m not sure who he is actually blocking other than Herrera possibly.
They traded Donnie because they were in tear it down mode last offseason. We don’t know if that will be the case this upcoming offseason. They also had Wetherholt ready to step in despite some odd claims that he should start the year in Memphis.
I am not in favor of trading either one. Burly and Herrera should both be long term core players in my opinion. I was just saying that if Burly was traded for some reason I would put Herrera at 1B over Jordan.
If we trade Burly I would make Herrera the 1B since we have a dozen or so minor league catchers knocking on the door.
