I almost always think of Foghorn when I see a baserunner get picked off, Gags. When Helton fooled M. Carpenter with the old hidden ball trick and picked him off at 1B in ’13, I instantly heard Foghorn exclaim, “Pay attention, BOY!”
With the Cards firmly competing so far, I wonder if they hold onto May at the deadline. I would not be opposed to offering him a contract extension. If you take out his first 2 starts, he has a 2.89 ERA and 2.86 FIP. He has pitched well and seems like a dependable mid rotation guy at least.
He is only 28 years old and offering him a 4 year deal for example would still only be in his prime. He has injury risk, but also the inverse is that he doesn’t have as many innings on his arm already that may wear him out earlier in his career.
They can still do it even before the CBA as long as it would be done before the potential lockpout.
In extension news, the Brewers locked up another minor league guy to a 7 year deal. Luis Lara to a 7 year $31 million deal with 2 option years.
It is always about money. The $80 MM local TV deal from Oakland follows them to Sacramento, but not Vegas. Also, the 90 mile distance between Oakland and Sacramento is thought to be close enough that loyal fans would travel in-state to see them.
Good points Brian. Also, I think there may have been some kind of sweetheart deal on the lease between A’s ownership and the owner of the Sacramento ballpark.

I would be fine with offering May some change to extend that contract and be our Mikolas of the next generation. Maybe something like accepting the mutual option for 2027, then $25M, $27.5M, $30M for 2028-30?
