The bats are pretty loud today for Memphis. 4 homers and counting. Baez and Jordan, who continues his push to make the big club.

I’m not sure if Richardson and Suárez for Peoria are breaking out, or just on a heater. They both have higher strikeout rates than I’d like, but both have been very productive. They are both in my top 40.
Luna with his 1st professional home run. And the FCL team has a good number of young bats, plus Xavier Cruz, who recenrly was ranked number 29 by MLB pipeline, I think. Dos Santos is an excited prospect who has kept up a .1000 plus ops all season.
Nice starts by our top 10 prospect pitchers tonight, at least so far. Each of Franklin, Doyle and Mathews has a pretty solid line going to this point.
I said the other day that Matthews was absolutely top 5 in our pitching prospects and that he could turn it off and on at will. This is an example. He’s still toying with pitches and at times toying with hitters. Yes, he can lose control at times. But he is learning and figuring it all out.
61.25% strike rate which is an acceptable amount and better than where Mathews has been. By my count, he only had a first pitch strike against 8 of the 19 batters though for a 42% rate. That number could still be improved but the results themselves were great. Maybe he can continue to throw strikes because if he does he has a future pitching in the bigs.
Each of the SP from Mathews, Doyle, Franklin likely had another inning in them of they let guys go past 80 in the org. 72 pitches for Franklin (the one I understand the most limiting), 80 for Mathews, and 82 for Doyle. Crossland in his mixed bag of walk and Ks start in Palm Beach only threw 72 pitches as well.
Dos Santos had another good game in the FCL and hit his 5th HR. I really like seeing someone put up Hard at that age to show they do have some power potential.
If Springfield can keep winning a few more, then all 4 full season clubs may be at a .500 record soon. Peoria has climbed their way to .500 and that just leaves Springfield 3 games under .500.

Cooper Hjerpe threw an inning in Florida today, FCL. No hits, no walks, 1 K. Good to see him back in game action.
I kinda want to go back to watch Mathews’ game from last night. Anyone know what was different?
I don’t believe Mathews is turning it on and off at will. Rather, he cannot achieve consistency, which is normal for a post shoulder injury guy. I hope we get some ML use out of him before his arm acts up again.
I wonder what the Cardinals have in mind for Hjerpe. Rotation, or left-handed relief? Seems like that his side arm pitching motion

There is a certain amount of inconsistency. That is true. But some or more than some of that is due to some experimentation. I believe he can do what he did yesterday most any night if that’s what he decides to do (not necessarily a 1 hitter because baseball is too random, but within some margin of error of that). I know most people don’t think like that or would ever do what Quinn is doing. But I think that’s just him and the way he is wired.
Tre Richardson…not much power in college, not much power in the minors the last three seasons…now tearing the cover off the ball. 10 HRs and 26 RBI in only 24 games. What is going on?

You believe Mathews prefers pitching to a 4.53 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in AAA just to “toy with hitters” and make $80k per year rather than pitching for results in the big leagues making $770k per year?
I’m a little dubious about him turning his stuff off and on at will too, but I do think that it’s possible that he’s a tinkerer and given his proximity to the majors, he might be fine with a little short term setback for a longer term gain.
Bling – If you watched his games and listened to him talk, you might be more inclined to believe what I’m saying to be true.
I don’t dispute that, and it will be a great gain for the rotation if you are right.
LA – Of course he doesn’t prefer that. But that’s a result, not an intention.
I believe he is playing with pitches and learning from live hitters to get better in the long run. Think about it this way. He had no chance to reach the Majors as a starter early this season unless a bunch of injuries happened because the Cardinals had already acquired Dobbins and Fitts and decided Leahy would be starting. That put him at #8 on the list of 5 starters at best but in this case he’s also kind of behind Mautz because Mautz had to be added to the 40-Man. Any really smart person (and Quinn is a really smart person) would recognize that for what it is and try to prioritize long-term improvements over short term results. Because in this case, short term results would have no impact on him becoming a Major League starter quickly anyway. I’m just reporting what I see to help you guys get an inside view. Feel free to believe as you will.
