I agree Jedi. I would like to see Kenny Reitz get more consideration for the Cardinal HOF. I know that his offense doesn’t really support it but he was a great defender.
Lars Nootbaar will play nine innings in the outfield tonight and Wednesday for Triple-A Memphis. If his body responds the way the club hopes, he could play for the #STLCards as early as Friday, manager Oli Marmol said.

I am going old school with some beans and cornbread tonight. Baked beans, pulled pork, bbq sauce all on top of a couple of pieces of golden cornbread.
Arenado is an all around better player than Gorman but we don’t know that Nado would have put up the same numbers in STL that he is in ARI this year. Some of it may be due to a change of scenery and him feeling more energized.
You are correct Pugs that Ranger fans will probably always dislike the Cardinals for the pain that was inflicted on them in 2011. Let us also remember that one of the Cardinal players on that team is now the Rangers manager. Such irony!
My comments regarding the OF defense didn’t really pertain to Walker. He has done a nice job out there. Luckily we got away with Velazquez and Fermin roaming 2/3 of the OF. That was making me nervous. It reminded me of times when a manager will intentionally make out a lineup in a way to get the attention of the FO. “I could use a little help here.” lol
Dobbins certainly earned his paycheck last night. He saved the day. Literally.

I really thought they would cut Pushard after Spring Training. Then he wasn’t very good during his rehab stint. I realize this is probably garbage time at this point, but I’m not sure how long they can keep hanging onto him.
They are hanging onto him because he is a rule 5 guy. Too often teams fall into the rule 5 trap. They feel like they have to justify their decision even if it defies logic.
Bling, I very much agree with the sentiment of a pitcher needing to be able to actually pitch in order to be highly ranked. I have never understood the rationale of ranking guys in the top 10 who can’t even get through 10 innings on the mound before breaking. Potential and “stuff” doesn’t mean anything while you are sitting on the IL. Every pitcher will get hurt occassionally but when it becomes chronic it has to be a factor to consider if you are living in the real world.
During last year’s rankings I had people falling out of their chairs because I had Hansen in my top 15. I still like him although I know that best case scenario he is a number 4 or 5 starter and most likely he is a reliever if he makes it to the big leagues but he answers the bell and gets outs. I could care less how hard he throws.
I was also high on Mason Molina in last year’s discussions because I had seem him pitch several times in person while he was in college and I thought he was flying under the radar in the draft. He has had a solid season at Springfield this year and is probably on more people’s radar now. I know I will have him ranked higher than our annual IL warriors.
Since any salary cap or floor is most likely going to be based on the CBT formula or something close to it I figure that is what we should list in these discussions in order to compare apples to apples. The regular 40 man payroll figures are not the figures being used by the negotiators.
In 2024 the Cardinals had a CBT payroll of $207M so yes they can afford $170M assuming attendance gets back to normal and the tv revenue is stabilized.
Everyone needs to pump the brakes on Velasquez. As I thought he’s not in the lineup tonight. We do like to crown em early around here. Lol
I was crowning him back in March. He should have made the team.

Well our current CBT payroll is $112M. Still a long way to go to $170M.
We have $39M on the books for 2027.
I could see Baez as a “trade deadline pickup” but he doesn’t need to be promoted before then. In fact if Velazquez is given a chance to stick around and performs well we could leave Baez at AAA until 2027.
I view Blaze Jordan differently. If he can play decent 3B defense I would rather him in STL now instead of Saggese.
Yeah if the Cardinals were aggressively trying to win this year I imagine Baez would already be here. The fact that they haven’t promoted him yet is actually a positive sign to me. We finally have a FO who is going to allow these guys to fully develop.
I think Velazquez should have made the team out of spring training. I attribute his poor April to dealing with the shell shock of not going north. After getting over that he had a strong May.

Marmol said they’ll look to maintain the same catching rotation with Herrera (McGreevy, Pallante) but that Crooks is not here to sit. That means a big bite out of Pagés’ time, which Marmol said he’s been an “absolute pro” about.

I am also a fan of Cho. Not only will the additional and enhanced minor league instruction help him it looks like his body has finally filled out. He looks more like a dude now instead of a shrimp.
And I really don’t know what all the excitement is about getting Nootbaar back. He’s a career .240 hitter.
Rat, the reason Noot will enhance the lineup is that he should force Victor Scott out of the lineup (well he will when Church returns and can play CF).
Compared to Victor Scott Noot looks like Ted Williams.
Without having access to the NYT article, would teams like the Dodgers and Mets be immediately forced to get back under the cap in this new system? There could well be some forced salary dumps, if so.
That hasn’t been clarified and probably won’t be until later in the process but the speculation is that any dramatic changes would have to be phased in over time to allow the Dodgers and Mets time to cut payroll and to allow for the welfare owners time to increase payroll.
My way too early prediction is that there won’t be a true cap and floor system implemented like the other professional leagues have. Instead the current CBT system will be modified with enhanced penalties on both ends of the spending spectrum. Of course this probably won’t happen until late March of 2027 so we will have to endure the endless posturing from both sides between now and then.
So far I would say this team has well exceeded expectations and one of the reasons I think they have is because the expectations were set so low before the season that very little pressure was placed on the players. We have the second youngest team in baseball so for them to be able to just go play with little pressure on them has been a big benefit in my opinion. Of course that can’t be quantified.
I would have to go back and look at our predictions thread but I don’t recall too many people predicting we would have a record of .500 or better and I certainly don’t recall many, if any, national writers or betting sites suggesting that we would. Who knows what our record will end up being but it isn’t far fetched to think we will end up around .500 which I think would have to be classified as a success.
