the Cardinals should not give Donovan away for nothing but Arenado salary relief.
That is Bill’s call, not Bloom’s. If Bill wants to send more money along with Arenado, then Donovan’s value can be used to get talent. But Bloom still has to find a team willing to take NA that NA is willing to go to. That will be near impossible, IMO, which is why I think Bloom will leverage Boston’s need for a 2B to get rid of NA.
I am in full agreement with all of bb’s posts regarding Arenado and Donovan going to Boston. This potential trade gives Boston a multiple GG winning third baseman with the possibility of a resurgent offense from a player at the ripe old age of 34. Plus the Red Sox get a GG gamer to fill their second base need. Now if the Cardinals can get Witherspoon with only a token amount of cash going to Boston, Bloom deserves Baseball Executive of the Decade. In deference to gscottar, we have enough prospects, IMHO, unless that prospect happens to be Sloan from Seattle which seems to be all but impossible.

Does it matter if Mitchell played SS in HS? Almost all prospects of note in HS are playing SS, C, CF and the majority still are primarily SS. The best athlete on the field is at SS. Changing positions is incredibly common from HS to minors and probably the majority of players from HS to the MLB will change positions at some point.
Pujols was a community college SS, then 3B when in the Cards org to then 3B, LF, 1B in the majors.
ATM, yes I am aware. Obviously, if a high school shortstop can transform into an outfielder, a major league catcher can too (after transforming into a first baseman first, sort of).
And lets not forget about Skip Schumaker playing all over the outfield mixed in with about a dozen seasons at second base.
Walker hasn’t done squat besides fail.

Donny and Ivan run the bases similar. I’d expect Donovans LF D, which is nothing special, from Herrera out in LF.
I don’t think they will trade Noot until they have something lined up. Trade deadline would be fine.
I liked M. Hollidays LF D better than Donny’s. Matt may have been a linebacker getting to it, but the ball got back in quick, accurately. Donny has a pause to re-locate the base runners. He doesn’t have an outfielders mental clock, knowing where those runners will be.
I doubt we can find and acquire a RH bat like Herrera for the outfield. The positional scarcity of that role is high.
Hopefully Bloom knows he isn’t playing fantasy ball just cramming all the bats into a lineup somehow. If things go well by the deadline, maybe Baez or somebody else, now in house or acquired, will be ready for an MLB try.
The only “fantasy” I am worried about is those who expect miracles. It took time for the team to get into the current state and it will take time for them to work out of it.
Andujar still seems like the best option out there.

Yes it is Bill’s call and if he chooses to combine Donovan and Arenado together then we need to stop calling this a rebuild and just call it a salary purge because they aren’t the same thing.
And if that happens perhaps a reporter should ask Bill at Winter Warmup how removing Arenado’s salary from our payroll but getting very little in return for Donnie’s value helps our rebuild.

No way Boston is giving us Witherspoon while taking on most of Arenado’s contract, even with Donnie involved. We would probably get a Roby type back which is basically giving Donnie up for nothing.

With the Cards trying to cut payroll and find guys for the “contention window to open” and the Rockies needing any arm, they have a tradeable pick around 35 or so.
Pallante has 3 years of control, who says no on just Pallante for their pick?
I don’t think the Rockies are going to want to trade their draft pick. They are further away from contention than the Cardinals and have a worse farm system as well. They need the draft pick just as much if not more than the Cards.
