With a tip of the cap in Cijntje’s direction, St. Louis doesn’t even contemplate making this deal unless Tai Peete is involved. The sky is the limit with this kid. Tall, athletic, with speed and power. In over 1000 professional AB’s, he’s only been whacked by a pitch 3 times, demonstrating both keen eyesight and excellent reflexes. Dick Sissler would have killed to get this kid under his wing. Last season in high A ball, he would have only been a sophomore in college if he had decided to take the studious route. There’s a chance that you folks in Springfield could actually witness a Peete sighting by as early as late summer.
That’s good to hear, Pugs! We have been hearing a bunch about Cijntje leading up to the trade, but I for one haven’t heard boo about the other two we got. Really glad we got not just one but two Comp. picks as well! I hoped we could pick up one of those in the Donny trade but two is icing on the cake!
The Seattle Mariners selected Colt Emerson and Tai Peete as 17-year-olds eight picks apart in the first round of the 2023 draft.
One prospect developed quickly and the other did not.

My gut is telling me that Torres becomes the biggest beneficiary of this trade. I think he might surprise and take a large role in the Cardinals season.

BCran – I think you may need to define what you mean by top of the rotation type. If your definition is could this guy pitch as a top 30 starter for 2 months straight, then yes, I agree those are all possible except probably for Hence. But if the definition is can this guy pitch as a top 30 starter for a whole season or multiple seasons, then I think your list shrinks quite a bit – probably just to Matthews as Doyle as possibles. But there are others out there in the organization who have some elite stuff beyond the names you mentioned. Plenty of Hope. Waiting on results.
Jnevel – I totally agree with you. Consistency over a period of time is key. Injuries are a big factor. Some guys come back from injuries stronger than ever, and some never really come back at all. Look at Chris Carpenter as an example of someone who came back very strong after multiple injury problems. That’s why I can’t write off Hence or Roby. Or even Robberse, JC’s fellow Dane.
Nothing is for sure. Look at Rick Ankiel. An example that “injuries” can be more than physical. I had him penciled in as TOR for years to come back then. You just never know.
IMO, no clear #1s yet. Best hope right now is Doyle, who hasn’t yet pitched four professional innings. At least there are many more candidates now. We’ll have to see how it shakes out over the next few years.
But even mentioning Hence at this point seems a pipe dream. I hope they can get something out of him as a reliever. As I see it, the problem with the returnees, Hence, Roby, Mathews, etc, is that none of them are on a current upward trajectory. All were once nationally ranked, but since they’ve all dropped off. Sure, they can regain momentum, but they will need to create it first.
I was asked by a local StL TV guy Monday night if I think Cijntje will be the no. 1 or no. 2 starter. The conversation ended quickly when I replied, “neither”. My best hope is he can become a middle of the rotation guy. I am guessing the TV guy wanted a guest with a rosier outlook. Oh, well. I call them as I see them.

Depends what you consider Top shelf. Matthews I don’t think is even in a top 100 list.
Mathews was at #41 on the top 100 list for BA last year. You can’t take it away, even if his prospect status has soured.
Hence was up to #47 and Roby up to #75
That was then and this is now. Cijntje was also on BA’s list for awhile last season, but like the others, he fell off. It sure would be more desirable to have risers instead of fallers. Doyle is the only one who currently fits the “riser” description and it is crazy early for him.
We will have to see if the guys who were there before can return or perhaps they will be replaced in top 100s by some from the next waves of starters in the system.
IMO, if the Cards had high confidence in the incumbents coming through, they wouldn’t be adding so many other arms. (I agree with them doing so.)

This is what I don’t get about the “development” people in MLB.
Let’s say Cijntje could be a #3 starter with his weak side, because he spent two years in collage and one year in the minors throwing anywhere from 75-100% of his pitches with his weak side. Hs fastball with his weak side went from 92 to 99 during that timeframe.
Wouldn’t his upside be higher if he threw 75-100% of his pitches with his strong side?

Did Bloom say that though? He seemed to acknowledge the Cardinals were interested in allowing Cijntje to continue pitching from both sides, but I don’t think he said their development plan is for him to throw 75% of his pitches from his strong side.
We know Seattle wanted him to throw nearly 100% from his weak side in 2026…
The discussion was that Seattle would let him throw lefty in 2026, but only on the side and in pens, not in games. Bloom did say that Cijntje wants to keep going on both sides. My interpretation is that he meant in games. There was no clarity about percentages because the Cards will assess before deciding what to do.
Well as the old saying goes, “‘Potential’ means you haven’t done anything yet.”
It’s always fun to think about, but you just never know until things actually happen.
Hence is looking a lot like Alex Reyes. Like most I hope he can be a decent reliever, but am not counting on it.
I still have faith in Roby and Hence. Roby was pitching the best of his life when he got hurt. I think he has top of the rotation potential. Unfortunately, we’ll just have to wait.
Would love to see Donny and the Mariners finally hoist their first WS trophy this year since we obviously won’t be in the equation. The fashion in which the Mariners lost their WS this past year was unbelievably brutal. It’s a letdown that a diehard Mariners fan could honestly never get over. Yes, time will soften the pain to some degree……but they had that baby won on multiple occasions……they had their championship firmly in the palm of their mitts and somehow someway it slipped away! We had one of these extreme WS debacles of our own, thanks to Don Denkinger. The Rangers and their fans in 2011 experienced vast quantities of misery and torment due the Cardinals fascinating and improbable Game 6 comeback. There’s been a few over the years, but none more excruciatingly painful than last year’s Mariners Game 7 collapse.
