The top 100 is only a relative ranking with the other organizations. It doesn’t really indicate any player’s future ceiling. MLB Pipeline has scouting reports with more details about what they see in these players.

I’m happy to see Crooks at #6 on the Cards list. I haven’t went and gathered info on all the Cards prospects, but I would have around #5 most likely ahead of Bernal as well.

A suggestion. Rather than having separate threads for each public orgs rankings, would it make more sense to have a single prospect rankings thread? Easier to see all lists in one thread to compare and easier to find the appropriate thread to comment on.

There is no right or wrong way, with at least two different ways of looking at it. Putting eight or 10 different rating sites in one thread could get complicated. By having multiple years for one rater on the same thread, it is easier to compare changes over time. Ultimately, it is a preference thing. Others can weigh in.

As an aside, I keep a master spreadsheet over many years and write three combined articles in the spring. Cards top 10, Cards in top 100s and system rankings. Maybe I should do them post-draft, too.

The MLB pipeline rankings are very similar to BA. I look forward to a few weeks from now to see Fangraph’s as they typically have some big evaluation differences. It is really exciting to see MLB, BA, and TCN all evaluate Wetherholt’s hit at 65 and power at 55. That is a combo that sounds very exciting for a guy playing a premium defensive position.

MLB Prospect Pipeline has released the top 30 Cardinals prospects. Hot off the press and I haven’t read through yet.

Updated top 30 after the draft. Doyle debuts at 2, Franklin 19, Gurevitch 20, Crossland 28. Very excited to also see Deniel Ortiz get some recognition and they have him at 24.

Are we ever going to get to see Tink’s potential?

Most overhyped prospect for every MLB team

St. Louis Cardinals | RHP Tink Hence | Drafted in 2020, Hence has only pitched as high as Double-A, where he posted a 4.22 ERA this season. Recurring injuries in Triple-A have slowed his progress to St. Louis.

With Hence, it’s never been about whether he could get hitters out. That’s the easy part. His health has been in question since he came into the system, starting with the weird kid gloves approach the Cards took with him. I think he’s still got a shot to help the big league club, but it’s becoming a little less clear that he actually will every day.

I’ve got quite a lot of issue with MLB’s rankings, but prospect lists are hard work. If you took the Cards top 12, which includes 4 pitchers (Hence included), 3 catchers, 3 infielders and 2 outfielders and you got one long term starting pitcher, one relief arm, and two position regulars from it… you’d probably be happy with that haul if you’re St Louis. Coincidentally, I think that’s about what they’ll get (Mathews or Doyle for the rotation, Hence or Doyle for the pen, one of the catchers plus Wetherholt for the lineup). Anything more than that would be extremely productive.

Are they still pretending that Hence and Roby are still top prospects, or is it just us now? And what happened to Mathews?

It doesn’t require extensive detective work to answer. The hurt pitchers moved down and out and Rodriguez and Bernal emerged.

Four top 100 prospects is a better than average showing.

Baez is really getting some hype. I am in on him as well but really hope to see how he handles AAA pitching and to see if 25 was a fluke on his contact rates. Baez or Rodriguez have the best odds of being a true middle of the order bat for the Cards. Baez if he can play above average defense in the corners and hit 30 HRs will be a very valuable big leaguer. I do think Baez looks more like a .240 hitter though when it comes to the bigs.

5 guys in the top 100 is nice. Hopefully 3 of those can become big league starters.

I find it very odd that Josh Baez is ranked in the top 100 prospects but is only 13th in the Cardinals’ rankings for the same rating system.

They stagger the timing of their rankings. The national list comes first, then they go by teams by division. Last year, Pipeline’s Cardinals top 10 did not come out until March 5. They were about the last of the major national sources to declare.

Also, when you click on their lists, make sure you select the correct year. (The good news is they maintain history, though it can be confusing because they also do mid-season updates.)

New top 30 is out. A lot of new prospects we traded for on the list.

I think I counted 6 new faces from our recent trades. And hopefully more with Romero and Nootbaar.

I guess Josh Baez is the it guy now after a big year in the Texas League. How often has that happened? If you hype enough of those guys you will hit once in a while. Law of averages. Being a RHH outfielder, it will be convenient if he is a hit. It depends upon whether he was optimized to crush Texas League mistakes or actually learned something about how to hit. Hoping for the best in AAA.
