7:12 DonovanAdmittedly I haven’t been paying close attention lately, but I’m wondering when this much-anticipated “rebuild” is going to get started. It’s not a coupla unimpressive bullpen arms that is going to set us off on the road to glory.

Chaim’s To Do List This Week
– Trade Donnie for a top 50ish AND fringe top 100-150 prospect, more than fair
– Trade Jojo for a top 200 prospect
– See if a team would trade a draft pick for Pallante if the Cards cover some of his salary (this might be a wait for a ST injury trade)
– Sign Andujar (LF/RF/DH) $6m
– Sign Moncada (3B/DH) $7m
– Sign a reclamation project SP $5m
– Sign the best available and willing to sign with STL LHRP $5M
-Puts the payroll around $114M with possibly very good trade chipsThen the offseason can basically be wrapped up and guys can start packing for the FL sun if they aren’t there already.
Opening Day Lineup
Herrera – C
Burly – 1B
Sagesse – 2B
Winn – SS
Gorman -3B
Andujar – LF
VS – CF
Noot – RF
Moncada – DHTorres, Church, Crooks, Fermin
That isn’t that bad of a lineup, but no clue who would lead off.
He will play somewhere…. but not on the Cardinals. Clearly he’s more valuable to the organization as a trade chip than he will be in 2026 and 2027 in STL.
Keep in mind, when the Cardinals are ready to contend by hopefully 2028, he will be a free agent and the Cardinals could very easily sign him back.
Which is actually another reason to get a deal done quickly and stay in his good graces so you would be open to coming back.

If Donovan is traded then Wetherholt to 2b with Gorman and Saggese platooning at 3rd.
Cardinals should be in no rush to trade Donovan unless someone meets their price in terms of prospects….he is under a cheap contract for 2 more years which makes him even more attractive in a trade.
They could also sign him easily to an extension next year….they will have plenty of money.
I’ll respectfully and exponentially disagree…..
4 years in the majors and one “full year” in 2024. Take your “profit”. Risk of being hurt in July is more than possible.
People against trading him have never heard the term “economics”.
Please explain how holding him is smart vs “Don’t trade Donovan” faceless argument.
CFICT, I think it is not a slam dunk to trade Donovan. If he brings a great return, trade him. Otherwise, hold on to him at the start of this year. If he could bring a good return at the trade deadline, trade him then. If you still don’t get a good offer, either trade him before 2027 spring training or sign him to an extension.
If the Cardinals could build around an infield of Winn, Donovan, Wetherholt for the next 4 years, I would be very excited and think they could have a very competitive team in 2027.
I am against trading him unless a team meets their price of top prospects and I have an MBA in Finance
Donovan is at a “win now” point in his career. If he stays in Stl for two more seasons, it feels like kidnapping. Donny should decline any Stl extension offer, hope to get traded to a contender, and keep his focus on free agency and the postseason.

Bloom cleared the 1B/DH logjam, and removed a bronze bust at 3B. 2B could be NEXT.
Selfishly – I hope Donovan stays as I think he’s just young enough to see the other side of this rebuild with some tread left on the tire and we need veteran leadership.
I also would understand trading him if someone is willing to at least slightly overpay but – I hope he stays if for no other reason than it might just keep Gorman on the bench if Wetherholt can hold down 3rd base.
It’s the OF that is terrifying to look at in 2026. Even if Nootbar is healthy it’s putrid – if Nootbar starts the year on the hurt list – Church, ScottII, and Walker? Oof…
To me, the solution is simple if Donovan stays. He moves to LF and Wetherholt starts at 2B with a Gorman/Saggese platoon at 3B. Walker gets long enough for Noot to come back to prove he can hit again. If not, he goes to AAA and Noot is in RF. Let Gorman and Saggese sort themselves out to see who rises to the top. It may be neither. If Walker does hit, Donovan can go back to being the super sub every day player when Noot returns.
I personally would like to keep Donovan and I still see it as 50/50 on whether he gets traded before the season starts. However, if the Cards can get a big overpay from a desperate team, trade him. Otherwise, consider moving him at the deadline or next offseason.

I hope they are also targeting outfielders in trade, maybe in a Donovan package. Two years of Donny could bring back a controllable outfielder and we have other chips to include.

They will not sign an outfielder to sit, so who is likely odd man out?
Nootbaar will not be ready for Opening Day. When he is ready, maybe Walker will lose playing time. Maybe someone will get hurt. They are not signing a Kyle Tucker type, so the new guy could fit in a four-OF mix.
OF depth is thin, and so is the bench, so getting veteran help seems a good idea to me. As an aside, I hope they don’t burn a valuable reserve spot by carrying a third catcher.
