May’s 4th start. He’s got to be feeling pressure I would think.

Hopefully May can build on his last start. We need somebody go deeper than 5 IP.

Indeed, someone needs to go at least 6 innings and preferably 7 to give the pen a rest

When it comes to our offense it is what it is. We should get an uptick from Herrera and maybe from Noot when he comes back but there will also be some kind of decline from Walker so overall I don’t think our offense will improve much throughout the year. I think for this team to win some games it is going to be with pitching and defense. We are going to need to win as many low scoring games as we can.

The best hope of this happening is getting some pitchers from Memphis to step up and help out. So far all they have done is end up on the IL.

Thus far our position players have 2.5 fWAR, whereas we had 17.7 at the end of last year. So our offense seems ahead of last year’s pace?

But our SP have 0.1 this year to 7.6 at the end of last year. Our bullpen has -0.1 this year to 5.1 at last year’s end.

With such a weak 2nd half of the batting order, I’d lost sight of how much the problems are focused around the pitching.

Let’s see if May can cut his lofty ERA in half after finishing his 5 2/3 innings of labor today. Very tough game for us today. Other than some good fortune yesterday, we’d be 0-2 in this series, so we’re due to win one of these games outright. With this in mind let’s call it 4-3 Birds with Scott going yard.

Din-din tonight will be a trip over to Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse, where I just may opt for some sort of chicken dish, coupled with spaghetti & meatballs.

Way too many primo seats sitting empty behind home plate. Can’t they at least bus in a batch of deserving youngsters to occupy them? Playing hooky for a day won’t hurt them a bit. If they were to get real rambunctious in and out of their seats, you wonder how that may adversely effect pitchers? It certainly would be interesting to find out.

And those primo seats are just now starting to find occupants……talk about a bunch of Johnny Come Latlies….heading to the bottom of the 1st in a 1-0 Indians ballgame.

Slade Cecconi dealing for Cleveland on this fine Wednesday afternoon.

JJ – Bounces out meekly to 1st.

Ivan “The Not So Terrible” – Feels terrible as he simultaneously hits and gets hit on the hand as the ball stays fair for the 1st baseman who’ll easily glove it and take it to the bag for the second time in as many batters…..Cards will be challenging this call……and St. Louis wins the challenge, as the pitch will be called a strike…..3-2 on Herrera as he steps back in with renewed life and a little less sting on the ol’ fingers…..and he’ll walk for the 16th time on the young season.

Burly – Lines a base hit to center with Herrera scampering on around to 3rd.

Walker – Lofts a lazy fly to left and Ivan won’t be going anywhere on that short fly…..but Burly will!….as he motors into 2nd base safely…..nice.

Gorman – Flies out to short left.

May kind of reminds me of that comedian from the 80’s……the esteemed Carrot Top. Unfortunately sometimes he even throws like Carrot Top……but not today…..looking goods through 2 for Carr……for May.

    Bottom of 2

Winn – Strikes out flailing at one out of the zone.

Church – Surprises the Cleveland infield by laying down a beauty down the 3rd baseline…..actually it stayed about 5 feet inside the chalk.

    Church swipes 2nd.

Pages – Rifles a base hit to left…..Church rounds 3rd and the throw…..won’t get a sprawled out Church and Pages will take the opportunity and trudge into 2nd safely. Tie ballgame at a tally apiece

Now Speddy Gonzalez(Pages) will steal 3rd base successfully….oh wow. Think he may attempt a theft of home? I wouldn’t bet against it, as Pages is presently feeling Lou’s presence.

JJ – Walks. Runners on the corners with 2 down.

JJ steals 2nd without a throw….is this catcher’s indifference?….not totally sure….I better bone up on the rules book I guess.

Herrera – Walks and Cecconi’s pitch count is starting to get mighty beefy…..46 to be exact.

Burly – Strikes out on 3 consecutive offerings. And this was a lot of work for only 1 run…..we deserved at least 2 or 3.

Cecconi enters this bottom of the 3rd inning with 49 pitchers under his belt…..and on his trusty right arm.

Walker – Started out 3-0 on the count, but then did a 180 in the other direction and struck out swinging.

Gorman – Popped out to 1st

Winn – Masyn needs to get going and start hitting like his sophomore season with the club. Pops a little fly into short left where the LFer and SS converge.. and it’ll be the SS Rochio making a fantastic tumbling catch…..wow that was a doozy of a catch.

Quiet game thread……one can literally hear a pin drop in this joint today. Looks like we have more posters around here gamefully and gainfully employed than I thought…..oh no Church misjudges a fly to left as it sails over his head…. but they’re going to get their man trying to score and it isn’t even close…..Church somewhat dodges a bullet there as his miscue didn’t prove to be costly. Between losing count of how many outs there are and misplaying easy fly balls, red flags certainly presently surround this young man.

Using old school stats we are 22nd in BA, 28th in ERA, 27th in run differential, and 17th in fielding percentage. Somehow that comes out to a 9-8 record.

    Bottom of 4

Church – Taps a comebacker to Cecconi who jogs a few feet towards 1st base and then underhands his toss to 1st for the out. Was hoping he’d achieve some atonement in this at bat to negate the error of his ways in the top half of this frame.

Pages – Pops out to the SS Rocchio in short left field.

Scott – Walks…..and this should be as good as a ringing double shortly here…

And right on cue he easily swipes 2nd.

JJ – Coaxes a free pass and that will summon the Indians pitching coach to the mound for a few words of wisdom.

Herrera – Flies out to right to retire the side.

Don’t look now, but May just may be the Ace of our staff. I wonder if there’s ever been an Ace in the history of this great game with an ERA over 8?

Now Gorman drops a relatively easy chance in foul territory in left.
