LeGrand…Did you attend Sumner HS? I graduated from Southwest in ’75.
No. I went to the HS built on the grounds formerly known as Robison field, home of the Browns and the renting Cardinals, Beaumont HS. Transferred to Central my senior year. Beaumont was becoming a war zone.
I have fond memories of southwest as I used to ride that Grand Ave. bus to see a friend and practice with your wrestling team.
September 20, 2022 at 10:10 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 149 thread – Tuesday, Sept. 20 at Padres #201672Would love to hear those Nate stories, Carter. How about at least one now?
OK Pug: It was after his rookie year in the Cards system. Had not seen him for some years. I told him I saw his stats in my little paperback stat book“WOW! I want to see it”
So we go back to to my house to have a look. My grand mom was shocked to see me bringing in this hulking black man to sit on my bunk bed and peer over the book. I reassured her that he was Miss Colbert’s boy from church. He was miffed that the stats were not accurate.I remember asking him who was the strongest player he ever saw (with Killebrew or Frank Thomas in mind) He said without a doubt it was Jim Wynne
EDIT: I meant Frank Howard.

Pugs…Remind me to tell you some Nate stories. We went to the same public school and Lutheran Church
September 18, 2022 at 4:21 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 148 thread – Sunday, Sept. 18 vs. Reds #201360cool labels Carter.
This beer talk jolted a memory: There was a stocky black vendor that toted around a case of long necks, Bud and sometimes Falstaff. First noted him at the park, but also saw him at Keil and the Arena (before it was Checker Dome)
He had a gravel voice and would shout: Who want’s some beer?”
Anyone remember that guy?
September 18, 2022 at 3:53 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 148 thread – Sunday, Sept. 18 vs. Reds #201346Someone mentioned Falstaff earlier. I remember he had that… and he also used to drink Blatz.
Ah, yes…
September 18, 2022 at 2:48 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 148 thread – Sunday, Sept. 18 vs. Reds #201324He always had various brands of beer, in his basement, at his bar.
TS…In my travels I’ve encountered many taverns whose back bar is adorned with 100 beer cans/bottles I had never seen before, some unopened! (and none are for sale)
September 18, 2022 at 2:25 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 148 thread – Sunday, Sept. 18 vs. Reds #201320LeGrand…I know that Gussie wanted to name it after his leading brand of beer
The joint was actually named Budweiser Park. After a short time the commish raised hell so Gussie had to go with Busch.
It wasn’t long before he had the marketing department producing bull-crap commercials while the bottling company worked at label design.
When TV ads finely came out they featured a catchy yodeling ditty that Hitler himself at his Mountain Eagles Nest would dig on:
September 18, 2022 at 1:37 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 148 thread – Sunday, Sept. 18 vs. Reds #201314Anyway, the first big league game I ever saw was in 1963 – Cardinals-Braves at the old Sportsman’s Park Busch Stadium
Bike…I’m guessing few remember what Busch Stadium was named in 1954 after Gussie bought the team
Anyone?

That’s right! Mind boggling
September 17, 2022 at 8:48 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 147 thread – Saturday, Sept. 17 vs. Reds Game 2 #201205Seems like I remember Gibby and Marichal having a few 1-0 and 2-1 type games against each other.
The most famous was a 15 inning scoreless duel between Marichal and (I think) Warren SpawnSeptember 17, 2022 at 8:43 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 147 thread – Saturday, Sept. 17 vs. Reds Game 2 #201201This has become a two Tums affair
September 17, 2022 at 4:24 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 146 thread – Saturday, Sept. 17 vs. Reds Game 1 #201112Ah, now I remember it like you said. So the Babe didn’t even record one out before he got tossed, LOL.
Yup. A notorious delinquent allowed to stay at St. Mary’s two years past the age limit was surely on his way to being an apex loud mouthed bully
He treated umps like dogs and they damn sure didn’t like it. He got away with little before he blew up in Yankee Stadium.
One final note: Ruth was never really a sultan
September 17, 2022 at 3:55 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 146 thread – Saturday, Sept. 17 vs. Reds Game 1 #201109One way would be to have a base runner on via BB or HBP to be erased by a double play. I think I read years ago where the Babe did this as a pitcher. Maybe Babe’s runner was out trying to steal.
You pretty much got it. Babe started the game, walking the 1st batter. As the catcher went ballistic on the bad calls, George Herman came charging in like a rhino
Ump kicked out the catcher and Babe smashed the hated ump to the head. He too was tossed and the new pitcher promptly picked off the runner on 1st and retired the next 26 batters in order
Babe was fined fifty bucks
September 17, 2022 at 3:04 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 146 thread – Saturday, Sept. 17 vs. Reds Game 1 #201100Game break brain teaser
A team records a line of no hits, no runs and no errors, facing 27 batters but is NOT RECORDED as a perfect game by rule. How was that possible?
This actually occurred and Pugs, Bike and any other Scout era posters may remember the details of this bizarre game, and shall stand mute.
