I thought the season would NEVER start. My Bulls and Big Red Cardinals are in serious suck mode. It’s been brutal for me ever since Shildt benched the whole damn team after we got that 17th straight win streak snapped two years back

Fill me in: what new players should I keep an eye on?

I’m disgusted. I started hating LaRussa when he left Ankiel in when he had completely lost control of his stuff. Now this manager does the same damn thing TWICE in one week!

I really feel our season is over

The answer to question # 1 is Dane Iorg, who not only had 9 hits, but also led both ’82 WS teams with a scathing .529 BA.

OMG! I hate I did not remember that as Dane was a hero of mine right up there with Ozzie, plus we share birthdays! May 11th, 1950 imogi

For those that turned in and missed the exchange between me and S.L.Card 25 in last night’s GDT

Card 25…Sorry to inform you that I stopped reading your diatribe after the 1st paragraph as I suddenly remembered you from old disputes back in the Scout days of this forum.
I don’t remember the exact issues but I remember thinking that you must be an intractable, hard headed, neo right wing jerk and forthwith will scroll past your posts as I would step over a puddle.

Carter, I think it was around that same time late in the 1964 season rumors about Leo Durocher being the next Manager

That’s right, but Leo had a partner in coup…Branch Ricky. Their plan of course was to replace Johnny and Bing after the ’64 season. Gussie was exited! He knew of the popularity of those two ex-Cardinal notables and the positive fan reaction.

But the team put a massive wrench in the plan…

The “big steal” Brolio/Brock trade was preceded by the Groat/Julio Gotay trade that was WAY more of a head scratcher. Brolio was a 20 game winner. What was Gotay to justify the Pirates moving a gold glove Batting Champion, League MVP player with a WS ring?
    more later…

PDJ has one more guaranteed year left on his contract. The two option years will obviously be bought out unless he has a miraculous 2023.

    Well THAT’S good news, thanks

That’s a pretty big accusation against Carpenter, Carter. You have any proof to back it up?

Not that big. Apparently you belong in the naive group of suckers who believe the PED era is over. Since the Canseco book PED’s remain Rampant in WORLD sports: Cycling, entire Olympic teams for example

The coverup by baseball to protect the power explosion highlighted by McGwire/Sosa that brought attention and bucks back to baseball has not gone away.

Baseball is a business and the bottom line is king. Playing baseball is a career and the bottom line is king. My belief that such a dramatic, unexplained drop-off in production points to ‘roids being the most obvious conclusion

Your asking for my “proof” of Carp’s PED use is as stupid as me asking you to “prove” he didn’t

LeGrand…I’ll be darned. I did not know that.

Dom…it’s not that old Gussie was a blazing racist. He was a man of his time, insensitive to the /social/racial issues of which any rich industrialist that bought a team in a sport he knew squat about would be.

I also know that Gussie, although he had a few shortcomings, would have never, ever tolerated anything like that.

Dom… bad news: Gussie was behind the horrid Solly Hemus who was disliked by his coaches and some of his players and HATED by White, Flood and especially Bob Gibson, 3 players any team would give a left nut for. He knew what was going on there and said or did nothing

Gibson lambasted Hemus in his book pointing out that not only did he limit their playing time but openly showed disdain for the men.

GM Bing Devine wanted him fired but Gussie wouldn’t do it until…the fans started booing Hemus every time he stuck his head out of the dugout. Keane now had the job

Carter: Must be that incident between Groat and Keane that Busch heard about from his daughter who heard about it from her boyfriend Eddie Mathews of the Braves. Busch was furious the whole league know about it before he did.

Dom: Not racial. Bling boy knows his stuff. To be continued …

Cards little known 1964 coup fiasco

The team was strong: Flood, Brock and Shannon OF
Returning ’63 All Star infield of White, Boyer, Groat and Javier

2 starting aces: Sadecki and Gibson with crafty Curt Simmons

Solid McCarver Catch and 2 dangerous pinch hitters in Tito Francona and Ed Spezio

However we were languishing in 4th place @the All star break

Gussie was a hands on owner and a team incident was hidden from him that, once he learned of it, enraged him. Word of it got out around the league and…

Does anyone know what that incident was?

I’ve never had a ML ballplayer sitting with me on my bunk bed going over stats…..very cool. How about one more for old tyme sake, Carter?

Pugs…one summer at vacation bible school, playing volleyball I tripped and was heading face first to the pavement I guess I was about 9. He was in the row behind me.

Somehow he caught me with one hand and returned the ball with the other. He was about 14 and FULL GRQWN
