I don’t understand why our guys watch good pitches go by when we’re down by 3 in late innings. Just put the darn ball in play. I’d rather we lose trying than lose watching — and that’s on the batting coach I’m sorry to say.
Brian, they split 2-2, but your point is well taken. Wong’s terrible at bat when it counted most is indicative of their inconsistent performance this year. We keep thinking certain players are about to break out, but it’s just not going to happen. New faces are the hope for this team.
3 called strikes on Wong w/bases loaded in top of the 9th. In the words of John McEnroe, “you can’t be serious!”
P-A, another interesting stat, according to baseball-reference Phil Niekro Was the last pitcher in the last 80 yrs to put up 20 wins and 20 losses in the same year. We’ll never see that record broken, I’m pretty sure.
Kelly up bases loaded. Here’s his chance to be a hero.
Waino velocity way down and even serves up the eephus pitch to Margot. I think Phil Niekro had greater velocity. Need to put some tallies up pronto.
This is tough to watch, especially the situational hitting. Wong just needed to get the ball to the outfield, but instead hits into a DP. Looks like he’s swinging for The rafters with every swing. And Fowler looks to me like he’s only half interested in what he’s doing out there. Thank heaven for Pham and Mikolas at this point.
C-Husker, I’m with you on Mabry. Still don’t understand his hitting philosophy, if he even has one. Our guys are lost at the plate against left handed pitching and can’t hit a slider away except for Yadi. I’d like to see a stat on first pitch swings vs first pitch called strikes. I’ll bet it’s pretty low.
Ditto, gscottar.
Would have taken my chances against Fowler than Molina, but glad they did pitch to him…
Finally a W, but played a losing game. They better shape up for the Cubs this weekend.
Agree athleticism on this team is noticeably lacking. Must have over-exerted themselves dancing around home plate a couple weeks ago, which was the most energy I’ve seen from these guys all year.
Ozuna and Fowler let fly balls fall in front of them that were playable on the fly. Fowler gave up on his fly ball at the crack of the bat. With his speed he could have been under that ball with a little effort. Ozuna just made a bad play. If you can’t make the catch, then position yourself for the one hop so you can play it cleanly, baseball 101. With the exception of Pham, J-Mart, Gyorko and Wong, overall effort on this team is a C- right now.
Embarrassing series. Some of the names have changed but the outcome is the same as last year — poor relief, poor base running, poor at bats. It also seems (still) that the Cards are unable to scout effectively. Every new opposing pitcher throws them off – and that’s a problem with scouts, coaches and hitters, all are at fault, but it’s a trend, so I’d start with the scouts. They should have some idea of how these new pitchers are going to throw, but our team seems flat footed every time.
I’m no longer a Fowler fan either. Not totally against him, but he needs to step up and produce at the plate. I guess that’s what $16.5M gets you these days.
Matheney puts “player development” above actually winning games, so is inclined to leave pitchers in longer than they should, and bring in relievers when they aren’t ready. It’s been his method since 2012, and he’s been very consistent. Same goes with his reluctance to change the lineup, which took over a year until about a week ago. He doesn’t view the game or his role the way we do. Bringing Holland in to close in a close game even though he’s still in a ST rhythm is a case in point. He’s trying to season Holland on the mound in a close game. Not the way I would utilize the BP, nor would most MLB managers, but apparently the Cards FO agrees with him. Could be another long season with late inning losses like we saw last year.
You know we’re conceding when Bowman comes in. He should only pitch in the 7th when we’re up by 10. Which means never.
Bowman to close out the 10th. Could be trouble. Lead off single…
Holland holding his own. One more out then score in the 9th and let’s go home.
Hicks with another lead off walk. Got to be at least 4 so far. Self inflicted wounds are really hurting tonight. Good thing we’re up by one.
Yeones ties it with a no doubter. Leone coming in. This could end badly.
Wong good night at the plate. He looks confident lately. Weaver great hit to short right to help his cause. BP warmups have started.
Ozuna muffed his play, but no error. Good play Kolten. Agree Weaver having trouble finding the zone. His body language shows frustration. 48 pitches already.
Fireworks 1st inning (literally)! That ball got out of here quick.
Weaver 22 pitch 1st inning, but looks to be settling down. Pham in 2 hole and Molina in 5 hole makes sense. Sure enough Carp draws a lead off walk.
At the game tonight, club section 1b side. Team looks good warming up, Luke looks relaxed. Weather is perfect – 65, partly cloudy. Nat’l Anthem was well performed by local high school. Time to rock!
Bike-Mike, where are you? Denver?
