3:10 p.m. Adam Wainwright (1-2, 3.45) vs. LHP Clayton Richard (1-4, 6.21) FOX Sports Midwest/KMOX
In 2 of 4 games in San Diego, #STLCards will face LH starters – Eric Lauer Friday and Clayton Richard Sunday. Cards are 28th in MLB vs. LH pitching with .214 BA in 252 ABs this season.

Updated to reflect Wainwright being named to start. He should be activated during the day on Sunday, likely with a reliever going down to Memphis – unless there has been another injury!
May 10, 2018 at 4:31 pm #51669Current candidates to start include Adam Wainwright (off DL), John Gant and Jack Flaherty (up from Memphis).
May 10, 2018 at 4:45 pm #51670With two games against LHP, Bader absolutely needs to be starting those two games. Gyorko of course as well. No reason to have Fowler in the game when he’s hitting this horribly from the right side.
May 10, 2018 at 7:38 pm #51673Flaherty’s 113 pitches for Memphis on Wednesday rules him out for Sunday. Looks like this has Wainwright coming off DL. Maybe Flaherty for early next week in place of CMart.
May 12, 2018 at 6:59 am #51834Jim appears to be right. Waino will get the start Sunday, and Flaherty will come up for the game in Minnesota on Tuesday.
May 13, 2018 at 10:39 am #5204614NyquisTParticipantIf we play our best players, the bench would be:
Carpenter .145
Fowler .147
Pena .174
Wong .194Maybe that’s why we have to hide one or two in the starting lineup.
May 13, 2018 at 10:57 am #5204814NyquisTParticipantThis team is being carried by Pham and JMartinez… two LONG time minor leaguers. Where would we be without these two?
Fowler and Carpenter should be in their hotel lobby playing TEGWAR. Who knows what TEGWAR is?
May 13, 2018 at 12:01 pm #52071Is it beating a dead horse to say I wish the team had traded Carp in the offseason?
May 13, 2018 at 12:04 pm #52074Sunday lineup, not surprisingly, is same as Friday:
1. Tommy Pham (R) CF
2. Harrison Bader (R) RF
3. Jose Martinez (R) 1B
4. Marcell Ozuna (R) LF
5. Jedd Gyorko (R) 3B
6. Paul DeJong (R) SS
7. Carson Kelly (R) C
8. Kolten Wong (L) 2B
9. Adam Wainwright (R) PMay 13, 2018 at 12:31 pm #52081Looks like Carpenter has been benched, now that he’s sat out three games in a row. I can’t blame them, with Gyorko and Martinez hitting much better and Wong being the far superior defender.
May 13, 2018 at 12:53 pm #52082Much better! Not to beat a dead horse, but that 6-7 duo (Fowler-Pena)from last night was just begging to result in one run in 10 innings. Kid Carson should bang out not one…..but two hits today.
May 13, 2018 at 12:54 pm #52083MM has finally decided to implement our best lineup against LH’s. Granted this lineup isn’t as good against RH’s but it is still better than running Carp and Fowler out there everyday and expecting a different result.

——————————————————————————————————-gscottar,
I agree. And that’s the definition of insanity, as everybody knows. Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.r/Rat
May 13, 2018 at 3:27 pm #52112Wainwright arm angle looks way lower, velocity way down, he his going to have to get by on guts and off speed stuff.
May 13, 2018 at 3:27 pm #52113Waino will not get through 4 innings at this pace, 25 pitches and he is not out of the 1st. Finished the inning with 33 pitches and only 17 strikes in those 33.
May 13, 2018 at 3:34 pm #52115Wainwright didn’t appear to have much umpf in the first. Therefore, he seemed to want to avoid throwing much over the plate, which led to full counts and walks. Either that, or his control and feel was way off. He got out of the inning with no runs on 33 pitches, stranding three.
May 13, 2018 at 3:35 pm #52116It takes Waino 33 pitches to successfully dispatch the Pads in the 1st. Let’s see on a pace to heave ……297 pitches if he goes the distance. Wonder what the ML record is for most pitches in a game???? Bet it’s over 200…..probably from some big horse out of the 70’s like a Bob Moose or Wade Blassingame.
May 13, 2018 at 3:37 pm #52117Gyorko keeps this up and he’ll the next guy to get on our **** list!

What I could find
Assuming you are referring to MLB, pitch count wasn’t a statistic that was commonly kept until the 80’s. The probable MLB record is Leon Cadore of the Brooklyn Dodgers who pitched every inning of a 26 inning game in 1920. It is estimated that he threw 360 pitches over course of the game.
It appears 58 is the fewest.
May 13, 2018 at 3:44 pm #52121Well then, Wainwright is going to have to pick up the pace if he’s going to wrestle that record away from old Leon.
May 13, 2018 at 3:46 pm #52122Sweet! What a fantastic find, Colhusker!! 360…wow! And I bet he was in desperate need of a Tommy John surgical procedure even before he threw pitch #1 of his 360 pitch Herculean effort. They certainly don’t make them that sturdy any more….bigger yes….but not more physically sound. Thanks Colhusker!!
May 13, 2018 at 3:47 pm #52123Time to get Gant ready, not just up.
May 13, 2018 at 3:48 pm #52124Wainwright has now thrown 16 more pitches to the Padres bottom three of their lineup in the 2nd inning to get one more out and put runners on 1st an 2nd. Gonna be a long pen day.
May 13, 2018 at 3:50 pm #52125A well-timed DP gets Wainwright out of another jam!
May 13, 2018 at 3:50 pm #52126The DP mercifully ends the 2nd inning. Wainwright sitting at 54 pitches after 2.
But hey! The Padres still haven’t scored yet…
