A win is a win……even if it’s against the White Sox or Reds. You have to feel a bit soria for James Shields though. He hasn’t thrown a gem like tonight’s for the past 5 years. And isn’t likely to again in the next 5 years….unless he faces our Birds again. Why is it that rookie and gray haired starters fare so well vs the Cards hitters? Been like that for a few years now. It has to be a lame advanced scouting crew. I’m calling for their immediate and unequivocal removal.

Would have taken my chances against Fowler than Molina, but glad they did pitch to him…

Finally a W, but played a losing game. They better shape up for the Cubs this weekend.

Rats, I agree. Seemed like they should’ve pitched Molina very carefully and settled for an unintentional intentional BB.

Pugs, you might be on target with that scouting critique. Short of what you asked for, would you settle for their equivocal removal?

Thank god this team was playing a team without a pulse again, if they had played anybody at all last night they were going to lose!

As long as it was equivocal, Euro. And CardsRedSox4Ever is right too. Our Birds would most likely have came up short last night with their effort, or lack thereof, against any team other than either of the modern participants of the franchises from the scandalous 1919 World Series. But honestly, heads need to roll in our advanced scouting department because our boys look absolutely clueless vs these rookie hurlers. How much do you want to bet that Kingham gets lit up in his next start vs Milwaukee? Now that’s a team (Brewers) whose advanced scouting department actually pays attention to the games they are watching instead of messing around with their cellphones for half the game.

Not the best win but better than a loss. I think Fowler needs to be benched indefinitely. Shift Martinez to right, Carpenter to first, and put Gyorko at third

Lol Martinez is bad enough at 1b he doesn’t need to go anywhere else or his defense will be even worse no thanks, this team is bad enough on D

Was in St Louis for the game last night. Not much action by the Birds until the 9th. Most exciting thing for the first 8 was the wave. And Hicks hitting 100-102 on the gun with frequency.

less plays in the outfield for Martinez if he is there

also…last night his height and reach difference got us 2 outs on his stretches

It sure looked like besides the top of the order for the Sox, a good chunk of their lineup was hovering near the Mendoza line.

Maybe Carpenter can put together a good stretch of hitting. He looked much better in his final two ABs last night; got aggressive and attacked pitches he could square up, rather than being tentative and trying to get a walk.

With first base open, I was surprised they gave Molina anything to hit. But they wanted the righty-righty match-up. Fowler seems to have done fairly well in the clutch for us as well, but he has struggled all year and as an opponent you would think the better option is to take your chances with him, and create a force at any base.

I wonder if our ball club would be better had we not made either of our “big” deals the last two off-seasons, and had an outfield of O’Neill, Pham and Bader this year. Plus we would still have Alcantara. But of course nothing happens in a vacuum. Before last year, the organization did not think Pham would be able to play at this level. And maybe by July, things will look a lot different.
