Did anyone notice the huge strike zone Searzak had? Then it shrivels up when Tui pitched? I only saw part of the game, I sure hope it wasn’t that bad earlier.
Did Valera get picked up? I am thinking he won’t but he might be able to opt for free agency since he has more than 7 years in the minors.
Why did the A’s trade for Lucas? Couldn’t they have just added him to the 40 man roster. Or maybe I answered my own question.
Meisner pitched at AA last year. Starter, though I wonder if a move to the bullpen might be in his future.
Turbulence my butt, the bullpeners in 2017 lost 28+ games. Sure seems like there were more blown saves than 4. A few less losses we’d have been a wild card. But with the addition of Holland, Leone, and Hicks, I very much like the makeup and depth of the pen.
I hope Ynfante makes the Peoria squad, especially given the caliber of players possibly making the team.
Sad to see Bandes go. I liked his power potential.
I am curious when Holland would be available. When I heard the news, I thought maybe he would be in New York Saturday. But after thinking it over, it probably is best for his long term health to give him at least a week, possibly 2 to throw side sessions with Maddux watching.
I hope I was wrong about MIkolas. Including his last appearance the 4 starters not named Martinez have this line:

With all the time allotted for spring training, no one pitched more than 5 innings one stint. It is one thing to have an 8 man bullpen because your starters aren’t going very deep into games later in the season, but it is another situation you are planning for lower pitch counts and higher relief usage for opening day and beyond, when you cannot stop after 9 innings and call it a tie.
P.S. If they have ties in Spring Training, shouldn’t it get you a point like in the old NHL days. Ha Ha
Is Palm Beach a red haired step child? They hardly ever get the offensive prospects, and this year appears to be Deja Vu. Now last year they did get among the best starting pitching prospects the Cards have.
I’d like to see Mayers, Hicks pitch the 7th and 8th innings, although Hicks would be used in the 6th and 7th to start the season.
Except for one fat pitch, I thought Flaherty looked great. Most everything had movement. In fact, all 3 of our starters looked great.
Munoz is on the 40 man roster already. Cards have to make room for Pena and Hicks. I believe Brebbia is optioned out for 25 man spot.
This is exciting news, even if he eventually sent back down.
I hope they have find some left handed pitching gems in this draft. Talk about thread bare.
Also, a few more of the 2017 draftees might get our attention this spring. I almost think that 2017 may end up being known for relievers, which we can use in the lower levels, and Mendoza. I hope I am wrong, but the offensive players chosen, other than perhaps Fuller and couple others, seem destined, at best for 4th or 5th outfielders, and utility infielders. Hopefully some will show marked improvement over their draft year.
I am intrigued by the catching in the minors. This is the way I’d like to see things, as I like Rodriguez and Lopez to get playing time, and feel they should get full season duty and priority playing time. I have probably missed some catchers, and cannot remember seeing this many with potential. Usually, the lack of catching prospects is one thing outside scouts have noted about our organization.

The Cardinals pick 19, 43, 59,76, and 95 give or take a spot or with future free agent signing compensations. That should be enough to help restock their lower levels. Best player available is most likely, but maybe draft some power or left handed pitches prospects, including leaning to more polished players, i.e. college players.
Just based on each of our relievers “stuff”, I think Leone is the best candidate for closer.He has 2 quality pitches and velocity. Tui, Brebbia, and Mayers have velocity but sometimes iffy second pitches. And I wish they would employ Bowman in a Maness type role, Cecil the early lefty, and Lyons the late inning lefty, possibly closing in some games. But it appears to be a closer by committee, until someone emerges.
If the Cardinals starters have success, I can see a trade on the horizon. It might help upgrade another position. Archer is an obvious target, but maybe Nola might be, if the Phillies start slowly.I love this time of the year.
The interesting things about the 25 man roster.
1) Doesn’t this mean Mercado goes back to Springfield? Playing may be a little scarce at Memphis.
2) Still a logjam at Memphis for the starting rotation.
3) I Am glad a deserving Mayers makes the team. I hope his spring wasn’t a mirage.
Munoz has played very well, but I would rather have seen Bader make the team due to the injury history of Fowler and more so, Pham. The fact that Jose Martinez can play a corner outfield spot doesn’t make me feel much better. Jmart seems less likely to get hurt if he plays mostly first. Now it comes down to Brebbia versus Mayers for the last spot.
I have not heard or seen much on majors or minors pitchers velocities. Is this discouraged during Spring training? I have hear a little about Hicks, Reyes, Mayers, and Mikolas. is there anyone else out there that has had a spike in velocity? Seems like Brebbia gained a few mph last year.
It’s early but I really like Mendoza. If only he had more power. Maybe he starts at Springfield. The Cards are pretty short on 3rd base prospects. Young at Springfield also might perk up his bat some. And finally I think Seijas has a good year at Peoria.
Scott Rolen is one of my favorites all time. He will be one I vote for. the other is more difficult.
I think Mayers makes the team, Brebbia is sent down briefly, unless there is an injury, or they decide to cut Norris, which is doubtful due to 3,000,000 reasons only. Also, Bader makes the team. and Munoz does not, but as Brian said earlier, Greg Garcia is probably non tendered next year. Or ideally. this would be an ideal time to make a 2 or 3 for 1 trade to alleviate the 40 man logjam.
I wonder what player might be available from another team at cut time next week, possibly as a reliever upgrade? I surely think we could pick up someone on waivers better than Norris.
I will also expand that Mayers gets a multiple inning role, which will go to Reyes when he comes back
Also, I favor the 7 man bullpen with Munoz making the team as well as Bader. but that cuts out Mayers probably..
