Looks like most of our posters have taken the day off. Guess I’ll head for the kitchen and slather some blueberry jam on a chunk of cold cornbread as I watch our birds catch fire.
In a few more minutes Madame CiF and I will be sitting down to a very ordinary dim-din of pork chops, mashed potatoes, corn and cornbread, with a beverage of iced tea and a dessert of fresh strawberries.
An afternoon game, I’ll be watching in real time rather than by replay tomorrow, hoping our birds can even things up in California and scurry back home to start thumping KC.

I think JJ is a good baseball player right now. I think it won’t be too long before he is an excellent player. I don’t see anyone on the Cardinal roster I would prefer leading off. Of course he could be better. I have no doubt he will be better. We should all enjoy watching this kid blossom.

Unfortunately I don’t have any info about the Nooter Bling, but I do have some breaking news concerning the din-din situation chez les CiFs. Reliable sources tell us that the family dined early Saturday evening on chicken cashews, that is small pieces of chicken breast seared in olive oil then cooked in chicken broth with onion, green pepper, red pepper, celery, French endive, and/or whatever appropriate veg takes your fancy, all well spiced with ginger, cayenne and cloves. When all was cooked, it was served over plenty of fluffy brown rice. According to these sources iced tea was the beverage of choice, followed by a large bowl of Haagen-dazs vanilla ice cream to cool down the spices.
FYI, I am seriously loving whipping up on the Padres and am looking forward to more of the same over the next two days.

I have a terrible confession to make: Din-din tonight was sausages and beans, washed down with iced tea and followed by a bowl of rice pudding. And actually, it wasn’t as awful as you might think, with the application of a little French mustard. On the sausages, not the rice pudding.
Now, let’s win another ball game. Rah Cardinals!
Just got up for a middle-of-the-night slash and thought I’d check in on the game for an inning or two. 1-1 in the fifth. Maybe I can urge them on to another run before returning to the sack.

Well I’d better get to work on tonight’s din-din of shrimp, mayonnaise and chopped onions on a bed of tagliatelle if I am to have everything ready, consumed and dishes washed by first pitch. Beverage will be sugarless iced tea. Dessert will be slices of lemon cake from our local patisserie.

We just polished off a din-din of pork tenderloin, ratatouille and potato pancakes, washed down with a nice bottle of Morgan and finishing with a bowl of fresh strawberries. Yum.
Unless I’m having trouble getting to sleep I’ll have to watch tonight’s game on replay tomorrow morning after the village’s Wednesday market.
Has anybody read a good baseball book lately? I’m in the mood.
Nice game last night. Even distribution of hits throughout the lineup. Let’s keep that up and give these Brewmen what for.
What is a successful start today? A pitcher who can manage to do five innings, I guess. Whatever happened to long relief? Gone the way of the dodo bird, along with complete games, shutouts, no hitters. Success for our Birds today? A five inning start and a string of one-inning relief stints. Well, if that’s baseball today, let’s keep it up.

Bikemike: Yeah, it does take a lot of sugar to avoid locking your jaws. It’s my second favorite, right after blueberry.
Lets bring out our very best “rebuild” tools today and give these blue Dodgers a red paint job they can take with them to Houston. I don’t know what these Cardinals have been eating lately but I want some.
Speaking of eating, I am in the middle of preparing some very unFrench enchiladas and refried beans that I’ll be serving shortly, to be followed by large slices of rhubarb pie.

Carter: What’s with the Wally Moon pix?
Brings back some bad memories of my youth. My dad and I were big fans of Enos Slaughter and when the Cards traded him to the Yankees and replaced him with Wally Moon I was devastated and my dad swore he would never drink another bottle of Budweiser beer as long as he lived. To the best of my knowledge he never did. I would have done the same except I was still playing Pony League ball and my beverage of choice was Nehi grape.
Ironically, Moon turned out to be a pretty good player and I grew to like him – even his single dark eyebrow.
I’m generally an old curmudgeon when it comes to fooling around with baseball’s rules and traditions but I must say I quite like this abs business. It makes me wonder why not have the machines call all of the balls and strikes, obviating the need for interrupting the game with challenges and creating a much-needed consistent strike zone.
I just watched the replay of last night’s flour and pounding of the mighty Dodgers. Doncha just love it when we score three in the first? I’m moving that rump steak up to the front of my recipe box for the rest of the season.
For tonight (another dratted night game) din-din will be turkey breasts and mushrooms in a cream sauce served over brown rice. We’ll pretend mushrooms are vegetables. Desert will be a French torte covered with strawberries.

Tonight’s did-din is a floured and well pounded rump steak (which is incidentally the same technique I hope we apply to the Dodgers this evening), accompanied by scalloped potatoes and a green salad. Dessert will once again be Haagen-Dazs vanilla ice cream sprinkled with fresh strawberries.
The late start (1:15 a.m. French time) almost certainly means I’ll be watching it on replay tomorrow. But I’ll dream of pounding those Dodgers.

Ah, it’s that wonderful time of year for asparagus. Madame CiF and I began tonight’s din-din with fresh asparagus from our local farmers’ market, splashed with homemade vinaigrette, followed by New England clam chowder. Except it wasn’t really clam chowder because we can’t get clams around here forcing me to use mussels instead. So I suppose we had New England mussel chowder. And, strawberries are now in season, so we finished off the evening meal with a bowl of fresh gariguette strawberries. Yum.
Baseball. Let’s hope our birds are going to continue last night’s enjoyable offense, minus the little late game scare that briefly threatened the mood. I love to hear those bats cracking up and down the order.
