June 24, 2026 at 11:02 pm #310972Not that it means anything, except maybe that life ain’t always fair, but I just noticed that Pete Kozma played in more post-season games while wearing a Cardinal uniform than did, Stan Musial, Lou Brock, Orlando Cepeda, Bob Gibson, or Manny Motter…Ernie Banks, too!
June 25, 2026 at 6:11 am #310983Wild Cards and expanded playoffs are the reason.
June 25, 2026 at 8:31 am #310989Yep, it used to be you win the league or went home and there was only the WS to play.
I think 1969 was the first year with divisions and league championship series?
Nowadays just play .500 baseball and you are ‘in contention’ for a Wild Card spot…
June 25, 2026 at 9:41 am #310991I received and MLB survey recently on the current state of baseball. A lot of interesting questions on there and I wish I wrote them down.
One of them was of you liked the current amount of teams making the playoffs. I was a strong diagree and would like only one Wild Card not almost half the league making it

Baseball needs a veterans committee that comes back years later to decide another team is deserving and give them a trophy.
June 25, 2026 at 10:36 am #310995Having more teams reach the playoffs provides more excitement for fans even if it does water down what good looks like. I personally preferred either the 1 or 2 wild card approach (4 or 5 teams getting in from each league), but I fully understand why it is better for probably both the owners and the players to maximize the number of teams who get in.
Bling – Thanks for generating a good laugh after I read your last comment!

June 25, 2026 at 10:42 am #310997Would anyone say tonight’s game might fall into the category of a “MUST” win?
I wouldn’t but I do think it’s an important game.
June 25, 2026 at 11:58 am #311002Whoa, thought we were done with this series. Was surprised to see a game today. Weird to have a four game set against a non division foe. Usually you play your non division league teams three at home and three on the road.
Edit – also weird to have it at night on a travel day for the D-Backs.

June 25, 2026 at 12:07 pm #311005When your pitching staff is scuffling. Every game is a must win.
I mean were 15-18 since May 17th and that’s with a 6 game winning streak thrown in there. We’ve been treading water the last month or so. However the Braves are 17-16 in that stretch with a little more wiggle room.
June 25, 2026 at 12:36 pm #311006I’m not sure why, but I’ve always pulled for the Braves.
June 25, 2026 at 12:54 pm #311007Closet Braves fan, KeepComingBack? If Zachary Peter Gallen was a stock, I’d be unloading it. His ERA has been edging northward from year to year since ’22. And this year he’s been pretty much bad to the bone with ball in hand. If he baffles our boys tonight then that will be a pretty fair indicator of what direction our club is heading. On the heels of getting spanked 2-3 to the lowly Royals, losing 3-4 at home to the mediocre Diamondbacks would be most discouraging. But being the eternal optimist, I’m calling it 7-3 Birds this evening with Winn yanking a 3-1 fastball right down Broadway high up into the rafters in left.
And what’s for din-din one may ask? It’ll be a jaunt on over to Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse for a bone-in medium rare ribeye with mushrooms on the side, asparagus spears lathered in butter, salt & pepper and baked potato swimming in butter and sour cream. Then on the way home, I’ll steer the ol’ wheel in Popeye’s direction to grab 3 of their scrumptious apple cinnamon pies…….and to jazz them up(not that they need any jazzing), I’ll be slapping on a scoop of Breyer’s vanilla ice cream to each of the 3 little gems.
June 25, 2026 at 2:46 pm #311009Taking a gander at the meteorological conditions for tonight’s titanic struggle.
All appears to be clear as I type this. 3:45 est. However, there is a HUGE pile of green stuff about as long as the entire state of Missouri that will be hitting the Kansas City area in the near future. Not sure if that will arrive in the greater downtown metro St. Louis area before the game ends tonight or not.
In other words, stay tuned.

June 25, 2026 at 3:15 pm #311010Someone mentioned that the recent Redbird woes could quite possibly foreshadow the beginning of a genuine collapse of the entire structure. Obviously I hope I’m wrong, but after last night’s dismal performance, I tend to agree with that impression. In any case, there’s been some genuinely foreboding signs going back to the final game of the SD series which was the team’s most recent chance to reach the 10 games above .500 plateau. The Cardinals have had 3 chances to accomplish that elusive feat this season and with each failure they’ve fell into a subsequent stretch of lackluster baseball. Each time they managed to right the listing ship prior to a catastrophic capsize, so maybe they’ll be able to weather this stretch of bad baseball before they see the Braves and Cubbies on the road, followed by the Brewers for 5 consecutive games in StL. It’s my best guess that once the dust settles after those 5 games with MIL, we’ll have a real clear picture of how the remainder of the ’26 season will play out.
June 25, 2026 at 3:35 pm #311011We are definitely entering a stretch of some very tough series against some legit teams.
Dbacks
Braves
Cubs
Brewers
Braves
DbacksThat is rough. We seem to be teetering on the edge and holding on for dear life. I think it is going to be difficult to survive if our starters keep throwing BP.

June 25, 2026 at 4:39 pm #311017We are really playing like the team we are – a .500 club that has had some breaks along the way.
June 25, 2026 at 4:56 pm #311018Exactly right BikeMike.
And it’s more fun to watch a team that wins half the time than one that is 15/20 games under water.
June 25, 2026 at 5:09 pm #311019Yeah, that doesn’t at all resemble a stroll down the bargain aisle, gscottar. Looks more like the running of the bulls.
June 25, 2026 at 5:47 pm #311022I’m situated roughly 15 mi. due west of downtown and it’s raining pretty good on the other side of the window in the front yard. I’ve no idea how long it’ll continue, but if it’s raining out here I’m almost dead certain it’s raining next to the Amazon…I mean, the Mississippi river.

LF Jose Fermin RJune 25, 2026 at 6:10 pm #311024It looks like this game will be impacted by the weather at some point in time. The Doppler Radar shows alot of green stuff just to the west of the downtown metro St. Louis area.
June 25, 2026 at 6:12 pm #311025Looks like Winn’s sore thumber has healed. I was led to understand it was on his glove hand, so as long as he’s not situated in the UK, he can still hitch a ride…
June 25, 2026 at 6:24 pm #311026I like seeing Boog Fermin in the lineup. Need some thumpage in the 9 hole.
June 25, 2026 at 6:31 pm #311027As I anticipated the start of the game is being delayed.
Not sure what the anticipated start time is now.
June 25, 2026 at 7:17 pm #311029From the looks of the Doppler Radar I would say there is a very good chance that this one will be postponed.
But we shall see so stay tuned.
