Luke Weaver is gonna be a damn good one. I’m more impressed with each passing game.
So their 2018 payroll is $75,378,833. Arrieta makes up almost half of that at 30m. Add Santana and those two alone are close to 3/4 Of the team expenditures.
I agree Ratsbuddy.
Weaver was very good today. He looks like he is about to blossom into a very, very good MLB pitcher.
He pitched in and out of trouble but it was a better performance than what we have witnessed so far. He will have to improve even more if he wants to prove he was worthy of the deal. But for one night and 4 innings he survived. Give him that much.
I’ve ripped the signing and it’s just one game but nice job tonight by Miles Mikolas. Props to the young man. Now he needs to show he can do it again. Mayers had a really good inning as well.
So who is playing 3B in the lineup posted above? Mejia or DeJong? Would be a neat trick for both to play SS. Talk about employing a shift, lol.
How many of these deals have the Cardinals done in the past 10 plus years? And of those how many have actually worked out?
Wait until MM faces a lineup full of big league hitters. Right now it’s a mixed bag and they are eating him alive. Told you all after game 1 this was a scouting mistake and he was the same guy I remember from his time with Texas. The guy is a 4A player and at the big league level a middle reliever at best.
Ozuna’s homerun was a powerful sight. It’s nice to have that thunder back in the lineup.
Yep one game. Ignore the fact where I said he is the same guy I saw before. Also ignore the fact I said they would have been better off with one of the young guys with upside. And nowhere did I even mention Mayers. Also ignore the fact where I said hed be better off in the bullpen. You will see as time goes (it shouldn’t take too long to realize) this was not a very good move for the rotation.
Mikolas couldn’t throw his off-speed stuff in the zip code of the plate and Houston sat on his average belt high fast ball that he repeatedly threw with very little movement. It was batting practice for their quality hitters. He’s probably better suited for the bullpen than the rotation. I don’t see how he makes it through a big league lineup more than twice and that’s if he’s lucky. That will stress the bullpen if he’s in the rotation. He was pretty much the guy i remember with the Rangers. Hopefully he won’t be there for long once Reyes is ready. Again my opinion and I hope I’m wrong.
So do he and Mauer split time at 1B/DH? Looks that way in paper.
That was a really good play by Arozarena throwing the runner out at third by 15 feet. Motte had a decent inning. He worked around being squeezed by the ump.
Who couldn’t see this coming with the Japan import…may as well had used one of the young guys if they weren’t gonna spend money for a better pitcher.
Richard Justice clearly doesn’t understand how the Cardinals operate. They aren’t signing either of those guys because they would cost a pick and are too pricey. Even if they were cheap they wouldn’t sacrifice they draft pick for them.
I know they blew saves and I said they needed a closer. Again they failed to get one and I still ask how can this version be considered better than last year’s bullpen?
Don’t forget any pitcher down in the bullpen will have to overcome the manager. He is well known for overusing the bullpen and wearing them out. Frankly that’s why Rosenthal got broke. I posted about the abuse he was getting by the manager on the old board and said then it was only a matter of time. Well that time expired.
I fully understand that 2016. I just told y’all where they finished. Again, the bullpen’s overall numbers were 7th best last year. They had a small margin of error because too often the offense and defense didn’t do their job. I still stand by my overall point and question of how can this version of the pen be better with the guys they added. They were some of the worst on their team last year and 3 of the 4 weren’t welcomed back. Depending on “ifs” will not end well.
Without looking, whose bullpen was better last year?
Atlanta
LA Angles
Houston
Toronto
St. LouisThe Cardinals problem was their lineup couldn’t overcome mistakes and go win a game. They only partially fixed that issue. They need at least one more bat and didn’t bother to get it. They needed a true closer and didn’t get that either. By the way, St. Louis had the 7th best bullpen last season 10 spots higher than World Champion Houston. Now I ask, does adding the above guys from worse bullpens help you when three of the four weren’t wanted by their former clubs? This off season had so much promise and was basically a joke how they finished it. They didn’t really address their needs at all.
I agree Mr. Walton. He still has a place in the system.
Not to make fun of Wick, but for some reason this came to mind…
Gotta love Spring Training!
So the Cubs continue to eat Filet Minon from the big boy table while the Cardinals continue to dumpster dive for left over scraps. Same thing different day.
Got it BW but those guys listed above should have had some form on them as those were big money types. I’ve had immediate family in the game at the highest level so I understand how most of this works. Even I had the opportubity to play pro ball back in the day not for much money lol.
I’m of no illusion the Cardinals intend to do anything else but like I said I’d like to see them add a corner infielder and another starter, both are there for the taking it just takes some of the cash they have. In the end, I know they won’t do it so we will just have to love the guys they’ve got. Hope for the best.
