As the Cards stand right now, MLB’s Richard Justice sees them as having the 5th-best off-season in MLB. He thinks they could vault to the top with Moustakas and Holland.

Richard Justice clearly doesn’t understand how the Cardinals operate. They aren’t signing either of those guys because they would cost a pick and are too pricey. Even if they were cheap they wouldn’t sacrifice they draft pick for them.

That’s a good point Texas. I’ve been listening to all of these national writers for the last four months talking about all of the big moves the Cardinals would make or at least should make, however, for those of us that follow the team on a daily basis aren’t really that shocked that we only made one “major” move. The national writers seem shocked. Maybe they should pay closer attention.

How shocked could Justice be? He already ranked the Cards’ off-season fifth-best in baseball with no additional moves.

Justice isn’t the only national writer or insider. I’ve heard Rosenthal, Heyman, Morosi, Bowden, Nightengale, Sherman, Duquette, Stern, etc… talk all winter about how very aggressive and active the Cards were going to be or at least should be. They all look foolish now.

    Projections:
    Wong 2018 fWAR – 2.3
    Wong 2018 zWAR – 2.3
    Baez 2018 fWAR – 2.2
Baez 2018 zWAR – (not out yet)

Just wanted to point out that ZIPs came out for the Cubs and Baez is projected at 1.7.

All those writers had to do was to ask me and I could have saved them any embarrassment over their projection that the team owned by Junior was going to make big moves.

Boras is saying that Moustakas may not sign until after the draft. The logic is that he can get a better deal once the draft pick compensation is removed.

In the future, good but not great players like him and Lance Lynn may think twice about turning down qualifying offers – and teams may be more careful about offering them in the first place. It will be interesting to watch.

    makes sense

I was starting to think all the FAs left will do this….as long as they find a way to stay sharp, they are basically mid year bullets any team could add

i hope this is NOT the way things go going forward because i think FA’s sitting out half the year is bad for baseball (duh)

any system where the functions of the system prevents the best players from playing the entire season isnt good

paying players and players receiving compensation for their work is not a question.

it isnt all one direction coming from MLB but also from the owners, the agents, and the players…they are all part of the system

but until the system works where it allows (Fairly) for the best players to play…then the system is not good for baseball

You make sense but the simple fact is that the owners don’t have to pay inflated salaries if they don’t want to.

The only flaw in your argument is that the players think they can determine their compensation.

Maybe next year the players will lower their demands if they want to play.

Owners are making a killing and they are not going to lower their prices to us fans if the players take less, they would just pocket the difference…both owners and players are greedy but owners can’t just say we not going to pay anymore and think they are going to get away with it 100% it will come back to bite them in the butt.

nate, the problem seems to be that the agreement between players and owners does not hold ownership accountable for having a too-low payroll. The players CAN impact this, however – by negotiating a stricter contract next time. That is four years away, however. There could be significantly more turbulence between now and then and maybe even a strike later on.

A strike related to free agency would seem like a disservice to the vast majority of major league players who wold give up their paychecks just so a few free agents could obtain eight and nine figure contracts, and so agents like Boras could collect their percentage of it all.

Boras truly controls his clients. Its hard to imagine anyone turning down down an offer of $20M for playing baseball? That’s twenty million dollars that is absolutely guaranteed to be yours in only two years!

At this point in time, it would behoove FAs to wait until an injury puts a team in a position that they would be more receptive to ante up little more to acquire a proven commodity. Lance Lynn is a perfect example.

Look how far the market has collapsed when Lynn can get a 2yr/$20mm offer but a few years ago a guy like Leake got 5yr/$80mm.

And I don’t see teams shying away from offering a QO to players. You can’t tell me Lynn wasn’t deserving.

Lynn or Arrieta might be a nice one-year sign for the Cardinals, similar to what we did with Kyle Lohse some 10 years ago.

Would be nice but won’t happen. Arrieta, Lynn, and Cobb will probably land with the Brewers, Twins, Phillies, or Nationals.

Just stating the obvious …. But a player’s worth in in terms of dollars is purely arbitrary. If a team, or teams, think he’s worth a certain amount of money, then he is. If they don’t think he’s worth it, he isn’t. Agree that the market has collapsed, and that Leake is a prime example. On the other hand, Darvish and JD Martinez have gotten close to the old market rate.

Yikes. Seems safe to guess Lynn won’t be getting us a draft pick with whatever he signs for.
