Good read on new pitchers we picked up.

Baseball America has been a long time resource for cardinal prospects back to the days when you just hoped the post dispatch would include minor league stats.
It is truly awesome. The information that is available and this website as a resource is really awesome. I remember the days as a kid trying to find anything and everything I could about Cardinals farmhandsI guess the question I have for everyone and considering your pics. Do you consider raw ability or tools more important than under average tools that just moved to the next level?
I have a hard time understanding why Libertore is rated higher than Mueller looking at their stats and their stuff. Perhaps Mueller get slighted for being the fourth round, pick rather than a first? Mueller was able to keep his ERA under 3.50 with an impressive Wip, opponent batting average, and K’s to IP. Liberatore’s season was much different. An ERA over 5 and allowing more base runners is a step back. They tuned him up for over a 300 batting average in the majors. He gets hit pretty well as I tend to think he throws way too many pitches over the heart of the plate. I’m surprised he hasn’t dropped down in the 20s. The only major league ready pitchers we could’ve offered we’re Woodford and Thompson. While Graceffo is the best prospect of the bunch, he hasn’t pitched an inning in AAA. So I can see why the ask was Donovan and Nootbaar. In the end, I think the Braves had the better offer in terms of the A’s needs.

My second pic is Thompson. Cardinals develop a solid bullpen as Thompson finds his inner Ken Dayley.
I’m going Wilking Rodriguez. He stabilizes the 7th as a great complement between Gallegos and Helsey
I’m flummoxed by this deal. Contreras is roughly Nootbaar in the deal, and the ATL pitcher is roughly McGreevy. Am I missing something because that seems super light compared to Nootbaar, Donovan and Graceffo like they allegedly wanted from us.
Looks to me like the just picked up two rotation pieces and a lead-off hitter. Muller throws harder than Liberatore and has another plus pitch. McGreevey is a good comparable to the other pitcher except that he is one year ahead of him and nearly ready for the jump to the majors. The outfielder had 85 steals and hit .330 across a couple different levels.
No one is saying he is a bad hitter at all. He just doesn’t find other ways to get on base. He doesn’t walk he doesn’t get hit by pitches. Kind of like Bader, he can run like the wind and do great things if he hits the ball. Just really low OBP. I think that limits you to the bottom of the lineup on a team where Ideally your leadoff and #2 guy can get on base .350-.400 in front of Goldschmidt and Arenado. That’s what made Carp valuable when he hit well. Always high on on base percentage.

HerediaGranillo and Bedell are a toss up here too as well as Koperniak for the last spot. Like the lefty heat and slider combo for the back of the pen from Heredia. Now if he can find the strike zone…we may have something.

I didn’t say he was a poor hitter. But he is more of a hitter for the bottom of your lineup as he does not draw walks or get on base other than hitting the ball so really other than batting him eighth or ninth what do you do with him?
Last year, all I could think of is that we had 4 ninth place hitters. Molina, DeJong, Edman, Bader. Now we don’t. That is an improvement. Actually have a bat to bat behind Arenado.
I actually like this pick up. He has the bullpen slider and a good enough fastball. He slots in well with the Loutos, Walsh, Pacheco bunch as an arm that could potentially take a spot on the roster or add depth. Who knows if Walsh will be healthy.

Trent BakerWalsh is 27 and can’t stay healthy more of suspect? For me at this point…Baker and Antico’s numbers don’t lie. Davila is right there too.

I agree. I think Trent Baker has done enough at the pro level with a good mix of pitches to warrant a spot over him.
What happened to Luis Pino? Seems he fell off the Cardinals top 30. I guess a couple other young guys that have my attention of Jose Suarez (mentioned a lot late in the year with big games and has some pop) and C Luis Rodriguez. Both had good years in the DSL.
I don’t think that package is going to get you Murphy. He’s a top 5 catcher in the league.

HerreraIf they balk, then it may be Gorman instead of Burleson. Too many teams talking about Murphy. He won’t go cheap at all.
I really wish the birds would’ve bucked up for Realmuto last year if he would’ve come here. The reunion stuff was great for the fans with Yadi, Pujols and such, but it screwed us this year and the next few.

Rodriguez-hopes of adding some velocity and a third pitch to stay a starter. Otherwise his stuff is probably as good as the bullpen guys like Walsh, Love, and Loutos. Though Walsh is a good pick right here too.And Winker mows us over because we won’t pitch around him. I hope he isn’t well, because he was a Cardinal killer!
AWESOME! Dude was lights out for us. I’ll take it! Hard pressed to find anyone that pitched better in that stretch of time.
A catcher that we could perhaps do a swap for is Haase with the Tigers. They need a power hitter and an outfielder.

LangeThomas for me is a tough sell being smallish with a below average heater and after getting shelled at AAA this past year. Not that Liberatore didn’t either….however 172 hits in 135 IP is a lot. His Arizona fall league was very impressive. He is just going to have to be pinpoint at the next level. We can always use a groundball out of the bullpen though.
