The resident guru on another message board just can’t concede that he misjudged Burleson’s ability. He’s been a Burleson critic for a long time. Now, he sarcastically, calls Burleson “Bumbles”. He can call him anything he pleases. No biggie, I guess. I, like many of you, are pretty happy Burleson is a Cardinal regular.
Burns, Smith, Wetherholt and Kurtz. I’m guessing, at least three of these top prospects will be “off the board” when the Cardinals pick at #7. So, I speculate, at least one will likely be there for the Cardinals.
Wow, just Wow regarding Wetherholt. “MLB.com’s draft profile notes “some area scouts think he’s the best amateur bat they’ve ever seen.”” Burns or Smith, Wetherholt or Kurtz?
Jnevel, lol. Kind of of like a courtesy defensive player. A Burleson/Siani hybrid would be an All Star.
I’ll answer my own question. Kurtz wouldn’t be a bad choice at #7. A 6’5″, power-hitting lefty replacement for Goldschmidt’s inevitable departure as the regular 1B. Although Burleson could be fine there, too. Especially, if they can get either Burns or Smith at #7.
Siani has made a believer out of me. His CF defense is GG caliber and his hitting has improved. Outstanding speed on the base paths. Very nice pickup by Mo. Considering Siani’s elite defense at a critical defensive position, he’s fine as a #9 hitter in the lineup.
Who do the Cardinals pick at #7 if Bazzana, Condon, Caglionone, Burns, Wetherholt and Smith have been picked before they pick?
Would you trade Burleson for Arozarena, right now, straight up? Considering Burleson is 25 and Arozarena is 29.
AdM, pretty good game for Burly today. Don’tcha’ think? He might not be in Contreras’ class as a hitter, just yet. But it might be closer than you think or admit. Stay tuned.
KCB, Winn, Burly, Contreras are a fine threesome at the top of the order, right now. You’re right, might as well stay with them, for now. At DH, Burly won’t come out for a defensive replacement. It’s nice to keep his bat available late in a game in case a team comes back.
Sooner, 1) Winn 2) Donovan 3) Burleson 4) Contreras 5)? 6)?. Either 5) Goldy 6) Arenado or vice versa.
AdM, Wetherholt may be the safest pick among the top seven collegiate prospects. I saw a past mock where Kurtz was picked #1. He must have some talent, too. Seems the key to either Burns or Smith possibly being available is if a team drafting before the Cardinals takes a high school player or Montgomery. Next Sunday will be exciting for draft enthusiasts.
KCB, Bingo ! Not only for a single but a needed Sac Fly. Burly’s the man for that. Not only with Contreras but the same with Goldschmidt, Arenado and Gorman. The only Cardinal, right now, I’d rather have is Donovan. And it’s a toss up between him and Burly.
That’s Rainer. Not Ranier. I’ve got a decent read on Griffin’s outstanding “five tool” potential. However, Rainer has been coming on in some of the recent draft mocks.
Sorry, I’m not convinced Contreras is a better PURE hitter than Burleson. I guess that comes down to what a “PURE” hitter is. I’ve heard some notable baseball announcers/commentators speculate that Burleson was the Cardinals best hitter at the time. That may have been while Contreras was out with injury. I will admit, Contreras is likely a more feared hitter, overall, right now.
I’m curious as to what the Cardinals think of the two most highly rated high school players available. Griffin and Ranier. The Cardinals may be in a position to have their pick of the top high school player available. They may not get that opportunity again for many years to come.

out factor that could keep from even tying the game. Against a fabulous RHP strikeout pitcher, Contreras is much more prone to K than Burleson would be. And please try to keep your posts here classy.AdM, if you understand baseball so well. If the “ghost runner” reaches third base in extra innings, bottom of the inning, the Cardinals are down one run with one out. There’s a RHP strikeout-artist pitcher on the mound. Who do you want batting to not K and get the sacrifice fly. Burleson or Contreras? In this scenario, Burleson is every bit the hitter Contreras is. There are different forms of “the most feared/best hitter”. Burleson is one of the main reasons the Cardinals have been seeing so many LHP starters lately. If you understand baseball so well, you should be able to figure out why.
Burly critics could hardly wait to pounce on him. Burleson promptly redeemed himself for a questionable defensive play by delivering another hit, contributing to another run, raising his BA to a very respectable .281.
I like the Jim Thome comp for Kurtz. Kurtz is also a nifty defensive 1B. With Goldy’s days apparently numbered as the regular Cardinals 1B. Kurtz seems to “fit the bill” as a legit pick at #7 for the Cardinals. Burleson and Baker could handle 1B until Kurtz is MLB ready. Wetherholt would be a solid choice at #7, too. But the Cardinals have some depth in the organization to play 2B, SS and 3B in the near to distant future..
With Hence and Matthews coming along as potential top of the order starting pitchers. It might be more prudent to add a quality bat to the organization at #7. The likes of Wetherholt or Kurtz maybe. However, either of the two top level pitchers would be a welcome addition, too. Burnes or Smith.
Are the older starting pitchers going to fade as the season progresses? Maybe something Mo needs to keep in mind at the trade deadline.
First round draft choices batting 7 and 8 in the lineup today. That’s a pretty long lineup, potentially. Also, Burleson playing his 3rd different position in the last three games.
