Gorman does not fit what Seattle wants. They have one of the highest strikeout rates in baseball and also want on base skills. They are wanting someone to get on base and avoid ks for a top of the order type of bat.
July 4, 2024 at 1:55 pm #258921I don’t really see a deal being struck, but at least I see both teams discussing it. There is more of a chance of a deal with Seattle being made in the off-season. Although I wouldn’t put it at 0% for the trade deadline since Mo has traded from the big league roster before.
July 4, 2024 at 1:58 pm #258925Gorman does not fit what Seattle wants.
Then I would tell them no deal. I wouldn’t trade Donovan.
July 5, 2024 at 7:52 am #259069
jj-cf-stlParticipantPass on trading Donovan. My lineup starts with Donovan, Winn and Noot; and each is unavailable in trade, from my chair. I need 6 seasons minimum, from each.
July 5, 2024 at 10:50 am #259080I would be willing to trade Noot and Herrera. Noot can’t stay healthy and Herrera can’t catch.
July 5, 2024 at 12:30 pm #259087Thoughts on trading Siani? Is that crazy? He may be at his highest point of value ever. And with Carlson healthy now and Edman coming back, he might not play much. I’d wait as long as I could to see how Edman is performing first.
I like Siani. I think he’s a perfect bench player for a competitive team. I’d rather keep him. But if I wanted to maximize what I could get for him, now is the time. Same with Ryan Helsley. Both of those trades would look bad in the media. They’d be seen in the same lens as the Brewers trading Burnes, although maybe not quite as extreme. However, that’s a way that smaller market teams can compete. Buy low. Sell high. It’s a tried and true principle. That’s why I’m not in favor of selling Dylan. He costs little. And his value almost can’t go down any further.
July 5, 2024 at 2:48 pm #259107Even though Siani has wildly exceeded expectations I doubt that he would fetch that much in a trade. At a minimum he is the perfect 4th OF for us for the next few years so I would keep him. If we really want to trade an OF I would trade Noot. I have the feeling his value will only decrease over time as other teams figure out he can’t stay healthy. It might be wise to unload him now before he gets into the arb years.
Trading an all star closer in the midst of a playoff push would be a risk. As I recall when the Brewers did that with Hader their season collapsed due to the blow to team morale. The Burnes trade was in the offseason which is a little different.
July 5, 2024 at 4:51 pm #259118Should Mo shop both Walker and Gorman at the deadline?
July 6, 2024 at 12:28 pm #259281
jj-cf-stlParticipantBurleson says yes. Two birds, one stone.
July 6, 2024 at 3:32 pm #259316Are the older starting pitchers going to fade as the season progresses? Maybe something Mo needs to keep in mind at the trade deadline.
July 6, 2024 at 9:41 pm #259367Today’s pitcher didn’t fade. He hit the wall at Daytona, spun out and then cartwheeled several times prior to finally coming to rest in a smoldering heap…Someone could’ve really been hurt!

ParticipantSome good options for trades would be some of the Texas guys. Eovaldi, Heaney, Lorenzen are having good years and are on the last year of their deals. Jon Gray would be on contract for next year too.
Likewise, Kirby Yates is having a great year for them – one year deal.
These aren’t guys that would cost you Gorman or Nootbaar, but someone like Lane Thomas.
A good bat to get would be Brent Rooker of the As, but that would cost more.
July 8, 2024 at 1:44 pm #259561I see people posting in places about the Cardinals getting a bullpen piece because that’s what teams in the hunt do at the deadline. The math doesn’t work. Quick examination time. Who are we replacing?
Helsley – No
Kittredge – No
Romero – No
Fernandez – No
Liberatore – I sure wouldn’t think so
King – Doubtful. He’s been really goodSo none of those. Now you get down to the 2 middle relievers that are used for mop-up or when we’re behind by a few. Lately, they’ve had to be used when we’re close because we always seem to be close, but that shouldn’t be normal.
One spot currently belongs to Roycroft. I personally love Roycroft. But you need a revolving door spot where you can shuffle in fresh arms from Memphis. So you can’t fill his spot with a guy who can’t be optioned. This spot is reserved for whoever is pitching best out of Roycroft/Robertson/Loutos/Leahy/Bosiokovic/Graceffo/Kloffenstein with O’Brien soon meant to join them.
And so now you’re just left with our current mop-up guy Gallegos. You’d have to DFA him, still pay him, and trade away assets to get another bullpen pitcher who does what? With the above names all performing well on the year, I just don’t see it. Unless we get a truly elite reliever. But I don’t see them going all-in for a truly elite reliever. And if that doesn’t happen, there’s not much point in trading for anyone given who we already have.
July 8, 2024 at 2:04 pm #259566The bullpen is currently a strength, and as you outlined, the only way to make it stronger wouuld be to DFA Gallegos. The Cardinals usually don’t go that route, although since this is his final year of guaranteed money, you can’t completely rule it out. The reason teams like to upgrade their bullpen at the deadline is that it is usually cheaper than upgrading the rotation. If you build a super pen then you can really shorten games and don’t need as strong of a rotation. Kind of like what Cleveland did in 2016.
But the more likely path is that the Cardinals go after a starter or RH bat with some pop. I guess we will find out within the next 22 days.
July 8, 2024 at 6:05 pm #259631Would you trade Burleson for Arozarena, right now, straight up? Considering Burleson is 25 and Arozarena is 29.
July 8, 2024 at 8:52 pm #259644Jnevel – we have an overworked bullpen of Kittredge, Romero and Helsley.
DFA Gallegos, get a second closer, such as the one from the Angels.
Of course, the biggest weakness of the Cardinals is hitting. There is only one NL team and six AL teams that have scored fewer runs than the Cardinals…
July 8, 2024 at 9:48 pm #259645That’s nice and all LA, but it’s a poor use of assets. The collective gain with a move like that is small whereas the cost is large. That’s why we won’t do it. Law of diminishing returns. You just end up pushing all the good relievers down and Roycroft is now on mop-up duty. Since all those relievers that you pushed down are already really good, then you likely gain almost nothing. Better to upgrade someplace where you get closer to full value for the 150% of market that you’ll have to pay. And that’s the issue. The places we need to upgrade are places we’re unlikely to upgrade (1B, 3B, OF, high end SP). Im still all for the DFA of Gallegos. But I’d happily replace him with another Memphis guy and we essentially end up in the same place for no cost. I don’t think they’ll do it, but a RH outfielder with a good bat may be the best value. Then let Donovan play 2B, Gorman DH, and Burleson play 1B with Goldy on the bench. Goldy and Edman will platoon with Burly and Siani. It’s not happening, but I think that’s the best solution. Or do nothing. I’m fine with that too if the cost is unreasonable.
July 8, 2024 at 10:21 pm #259647I don’t understand why Gallegos hasn’t been pitching well this year. In prior years he was good enough to deserve to be in a major league bullpen. It seems possible that there is a team that would take a chance on Gallegos based on his prior years’ performance, and then, the Cardinals could try to fill his spot with a reliable veteran upgrade from outside the system.
I don’t see how they could fit another starting pitcher into the current rotation. With the way Pallante has been pitching in the rotation, it would be a really tough call to send him to the bullpen. That’s not going to happen. There’s no place for a RH bat, either. They’re not going to release Carpenter or Crawford to open roster space for a RH bat.
I think Carlson looks much different at the plate this year than he did in prior years. I think the Carlson we saw at spring training is what he’s going to look like in the future. The Cardinals are going to have to open up a roster spot for Edman, and Carlson looks like the one who will be moved. I just hope they get a really good prospect, or two, for him. And, if Edman has a setback and can’t make ti back this year, then it wouldn’t make sense to trade Carlson.
There might not be much activity by the Cardinals at this year’s trading deadline.
July 9, 2024 at 5:43 am #259655Fedde is definitely at the top of my “willing to give up something decent/makes the team better/another year of control” list. The White Sox need pretty much everything. I wouldn’t give up a Gorman or Walker type, but it will cost someone decent.
What’s a realistic package?
July 9, 2024 at 9:08 am #259673
jj-cf-stlParticipantRealistic price should be high CF. With a plus 1st half results, and 1.5 yrs of club control at a club friendly salary, the suitors should be lined up.
He’s an overpay waiting to happen if his flash in the pan 2024 doesn’t carry forward. Not a bad choice tho CF, because he’s definitely raised his value.
July 9, 2024 at 9:42 am #259674
stlcard25ParticipantFedde has a bit of Mikolas’ career arc, although he was mediocre for longer before going overseas. Would he help us in 2024? Perhaps. He would arguably be a bigger help in 2025, but we would see. Not sure I want to pay the price for him.
July 9, 2024 at 11:50 am #259684Any takers on Burleson for Arozarena, right now, straight up?
July 9, 2024 at 12:36 pm #259693That’s nice and all LA, but it’s a poor use of assets. The collective gain with a move like that is small whereas the cost is large. That’s why we won’t do it. Law of diminishing returns. You just end up pushing all the good relievers down and Roycroft is now on mop-up duty.
If you don’t get a decent reliever, in the playoffs you will have situations where Helsley can’t pitch two days in a row.
I don’t care that you have to push a good reliever into mop-up duty. Get the game over with quicker. Or maybe games don’t get so out-of-hand if all your relievers are actually good instead of sporting 8.40 ERAs.
No big deal though. This year, I would prioritize hitting over a reliever, given the Cardinals anemic offense. But as you say, the people they need to replace in the lineup, they won’t.
July 9, 2024 at 12:46 pm #259694I could see Carlson traded for a reliever and a prospect.
July 9, 2024 at 1:02 pm #259696FYI here,
Why would the Reds be interested in acquiring Austin Slater from the Giants? -
