Matthews is likely better, right now, than all of the high priced starting pitchers Mo signed in the off season and has since, the one, recently traded for. Just an opinion. My point, for the present and the future, call this young stud up to see what he;s got. What’s to lose?
It will be interesting to see how Matthews’ future MLB success compares to the top starting pitchers drafted in the ’24 MLB draft. Top five picks, Chase Burns at #2 and Hagen Smith at #5.
RBK, with the success Burleson has had at 25. Leading the team in HRs and RBIs. He and his agent could solicit an extension with a nice pay raise. Other teams do it with outstanding young producers. If they don’t comply, Burly and his agent may have a long memory later. Burleson could have some amazing numbers the next two or three seasons before they might have to pay him big bucks. Maybe I have a better grasp of the potential situation than you think.
Here’s the deal. next season, unfortunately, it looks like an underperforming, Gray. is taking over the underperforming, Goldschmidt’s salary this season. Both at around 25 million/per. With Burleson’s production, at a minimum salary, it enables the Cardinals some, somewhat, salary space to maybe help the team. Burly could use that leverage now. But he won’t.He’s a team player.
AdM, hassles me about Burleson being good, but not a Superstar. Burly is 25 years old. Think about the progress he’s made this season. I just hope Gorman and Walker progress to the level Burleson has by the time they are 25. Please give me some slack on all the Burleson talk. He is hitting and playing defense into replacing Goldschmidt at 1B next season. Saving millions for the needed starting pitching help. That is one less problem of the many problems the Cardinals have.
AdM, you rambled how horrible, defensively, Burleson was at 1B. Please evaluate his defensive performance at 1B today. By the way, with Contreras being out so much and with both Goldy’s sand Arenado’s dubious offensive play this season. The Cardinals wouldn’t even have the slightest chance at the last wildcard if it weren’t for Burleson’s production. Spin that.
AdM, as a longtime, highly successful high school coach in another sport. Sometimes, you just have to trust your instincts evaluating potential. Like I did with Burleson. That worked out pretty darn good, wouldn’t you agree? I believe you thought my take on Burleson was “silly” for a long time. Am I right? It’s not “silly” now. You like data. Check out his HRs and RBIs. And a respectable BA.
AdM, that’s “par for the course” Right now, Gray is an average MLB pitcher. Matthews, at 23, has been brilliant at his levels. I’m going with the impressive youngster. Hopefully, we both get better at agreeing to disagree.
More and more, it’s looking like Burly will be fine, defensively, at 1B next season. If he continues to slug enough, offensively, for 1B.
Enough BS from Gray. Right now, he is an average MLB starting pitcher. 25M next season. It appears to me Mo got fleeced again.
gigantic instead of the misspelling. They won’t bring Matthews up because of the gignantic financial commitment to Gray and others. They’ll bring Matthews up later than sooner. Typical Mo.
Brian, just curious, why did you delete my last post here? Wasn’t it about Cardinals baseball other than your pet peeve? I merely pointed that out.
AdM, you are simply a frustrated anti-Burly fan. His development and production this season has made you look like a fool for degrading him in the past. Often in a nasty manner. And your pride makes you keep trying to continue cutting him down anyway you can. I’ll admit, you are one of the main reasons for my redundancy. You, too, could just ignore. If you just could.
Are Gorman and Walker becoming an all too famliar repeat of dwindling trade value? ex O’Neill, Carlson.
AdM, my suggestion is “interim” manager for Clapp for the rest of the season. See how that goes. Then maybe open it up to outside candidates after the season.
RBK, this is a new situation. What’s you problem? As Brian suggested, ignore if you don’t care for the subject.
CC, that could be the case. But there’s more to the post than me touting Burleson. ex. the underachievement of highly touted players, Gorman and Walker. Also, the dire need for some starting pitchers to develop into top of the rotation types. Which, hopefully, Hence and Matthews can and will be. I tried to illustrate how Winn and Burleson have set a fine example of what can be done.
Sorry that I am so inferior to such an esteemed group of “intelligent” Cardinals posters. I’ll try just viewing and refrain from posting for a while.
