Lance Lynn (11-7, 3.01) vs. LHP Jose Quintana (6-3, 3.88) 1:20 p.m. FOX Sports Midwest
September 17, 2017 at 9:58 am #33189Win or go home today. Its as simple as that.
September 17, 2017 at 10:47 am #33190Not quite that simple, as we are not mathematically out even with a loss. Plus we still have those four home games against Chicago.
Still though, realistically the club has to win today to make a statement. They have never really shown the ability to quite keep up with the “big boys” the last two years, and this year most likely ends up the same way. But the games are decided on the field, not in words.
If Lynn goes out and dominates, we really need to get serious about bringing him back. One thing I hear is the club most likely will not show any interest in him because he will block a promising young pitcher. But really, bringing him back only “blocks” the 12th pitcher on the roster. It really comes down to whether or not the club feels Lynn will be worth the investment. The Cardinals get a little careless in that area, as they seem to always think they have a bountiful crop of young pitchers. We do have talent, but pitching is a fragile commodity.
And letting him walk risks his ending up in Chicago or Milwaukee, or with a club we will be contending with for the post season in the future.
September 17, 2017 at 1:20 pm #33206True, they are not mathematically out it (and I do respect Yogi Bera), but it would take an epic failure on the part of the Cubs and Brewers for the Cards to make the playoffs (not counting a wild card since Rockies are also finishing strong). Cubs finish out against Tampa Bay, Brewers, Cards and Reds, and Brewers finish against all NL Central teams. Our NL Central record has been abysmal expect for the Pirates, so the playoff picture has faded to black.
Our best hope now, and would make my heart sing with joy, would be for the Cards to play spoiler to the Cubs in the last series and watch the Brewers take the Div. Gotta shoot for something, right?
Finally, Lance Lynn is a good pitcher, but not an elite pitcher. His value as a free agent could run around $10-12M which is low marginal value for the Cards since we already have 5 starters who could potentially be 10 game winners. There are several teams in desperate need of quality starters who would see much higher value in a Lynn trade. Use the cash we save on Lynn and any other head room in the topline to acquire some quality relief pitching and a hitter or two for the middle of the lineup. There is hope for 2018, but Cards need to get at it, now.
September 17, 2017 at 1:33 pm #33207NJ315ParticipantThat was a bad call on Carp k. Payback I guess.
September 17, 2017 at 1:43 pm #33209PadsFSParticipantGood first inning for Lynn. That means he usually will do well until the 5th.
September 17, 2017 at 1:47 pm #33210bccranParticipantWhen are our bats going to wake up?
September 17, 2017 at 2:05 pm #33213NJ315ParticipantWhen they face second tier pitching.
September 17, 2017 at 2:14 pm #33218More fielding issues! Yikes!
September 17, 2017 at 2:15 pm #33219NJ315ParticipantOur pitchers need to field their position.
September 17, 2017 at 2:22 pm #33222NJ315ParticipantBig K for Lance. 1-0 Cubs
September 17, 2017 at 2:35 pm #33223NJ315ParticipantCubs trying their best to let us score but the second chance at a DP they get it right.
September 17, 2017 at 2:37 pm #33225The Redbirds really needed to cash in there. Just cannot get the big hit in this series.
September 17, 2017 at 2:38 pm #33226bccranParticipantThey give you a huge break by muffing an easy double play ball. Then on the next pitch you give it right back to them with another double play ball.
Boy, this team is hard to watch.September 17, 2017 at 2:47 pm #33227Cards failing at every turn in Wrigley when there’s an opportunity on the table. Lynn just gives up a HR to KS and then walks the pitcher. No other way to view it, Maddon and the cubs own us right now. Pedro’s “daddy” comment comes to mind. Score is just 2-0, so maybe they can hang close…at some point this has to change, doesn’t it?
September 17, 2017 at 3:24 pm #33230Finally, somebody delivers. DF hits a 3-run shot to tie.
September 17, 2017 at 3:25 pm #33231NJ315ParticipantFowler ties it! 3-3
September 17, 2017 at 3:28 pm #33232Yadi follows the DF HR with a double and Wong get hit by pitch. Quintana is now done, Maddon going to the pen. Maybe some good vibes are moving to our dugout now.
September 17, 2017 at 3:34 pm #33236NJ315ParticipantGrichuk k’s
September 17, 2017 at 3:49 pm #33248NJ315ParticipantBrebbia great job after 1st and 3rd no outs. Thankfully Matheny did not bring a lefty to pitch to Jay.
September 17, 2017 at 4:04 pm #33264Another opportunity to add on and the Redbirds cannot get the big hit. Very frustrating!
September 17, 2017 at 4:08 pm #33268bccranParticipantThe failures of Grichuk, Piscotty, Peralta, and Diaz this year have been brutal.
September 17, 2017 at 4:15 pm #33271NJ315ParticipantI wouldn’t bring Bowman in. But hopefully I am wrong and it will work out. The Cubs have not been good with runners on yesterday and today.
September 17, 2017 at 4:15 pm #33272NJ315ParticipantSo far so good.
September 17, 2017 at 4:16 pm #33274NJ315ParticipantHeyward has .706 OPS go get him.
